I always made my interns, staff and students read The Communist Manifesto. Eye opening for the unititiated. As a follow up The Road to Serfdom by FA Hayek. Set during WWII England. More true today then ever. Lead to a Nobel Prize in Economics.

"Why The Allies Won" by Richard Overy

"Patton: A Genius For War" by Carlo D'este

I found both of these books to be very interesting

If your into Patton.
You can read his diaries and head from the man himself 2 volume set. Or "War as I knew it" which is about as close as your going to get to reading about the war form his point of view.

1. "To Kingdom Come" by Robert J. Mrazek
2. "The Bomber Boys" by Travis L. Ayres

Both of these are nonfiction works detailing operations undertaken by the US 8th AAF in Europe. Most notably Big Week, Black Thursday, Stuttgart, Berlin and more. They get right to the heart of the situations explaining the experiences of the airmen who lived through it as well as the commanders like Ira Eaker, Hap Arnold, Arthur Harrison and Jimmy Doolittle.

Try "we at porsche"........it has a lot of WWII from thier perspective.

I just used a reference to a problem explained in there to school a moron who is ruining our ricardo transaxles on the ford GT.

If you want non fiction that reads like Tom Clancy I suggest 'Why Nations Go To War' by John G. Stoessinger. 

I also suggest Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.

Just finished "The Wolves Are At The Door" ... amazing book about a one legged, female, American operative for the British SOE, and later the American OSS, in France during WWII.
 Well worth the read for history buffs.

Was her name Eileen something or other?

Oh boy, Chickenhawk was quite the intense book. I recommend it to anyone interested in that subject matter. His follow up Chickenhawk:Back In The World, was very good as well.

I very highly recommend, “Endurance” by Alfred Lansing.

“The book recounts the failure of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in its attempt to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914 and the subsequent struggle for survival endured by the twenty-eight man crew for almost two years.”

It is the best book I have ever read.

I've read that and it is good!

Another really really great one is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.  It's really excellent, well researched and well written and a gripping story. Non fiction, the guy had an amazing life.

Consider these with previews on Amazon. Bill Sloan's work on the Wake Island is the best ever written. I'll bet you didn't know that the Marines had effectively defeated the Japanese invasion troops, only to have a confused and isolated naval officer (senior officer present on the island) surrender, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Jim Hornfischer's The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is the best recounting of the Samar naval battle written to date, and his Neptune's Inferno is the best effort on the U.S. Navy's Guadalcanal engagements. Jim is a great guy, and he's a talented writer and researcher. Eric Bergerud's Fire in the Sky: The Air War in the South Pacific is also a very good read. Eric once had a Aces High account, and I seem to recall that he flew with the Blue Knights and was a pal of Lazs.

Was going to order Endurance until I looked at the bill in my shopping cart.    Figure I'll hold off on that one until the next round.
