You might be better off ordering a true hifi headset from sennheiser, koss, beyerdynamics or the sorts.

The fact that they call it 7.1 tells me it's a gimmick! 7.1 means 7 channels + a subwoofer. Headphones do not have center channels nor do they have subwoofers.

Wrong

separate volume controls for front/rear/centre? suspicious that they are ready to hand considering their relative volumes are critical for 3D perception. I'd expect them to be in a calibration utility if it was a serious attempt at surround.

That right there proves its a gimmick. They are simulating the center channel and thus fooling the user into perceiving its presence. You can do the same thing with two speakers and thats what DirectX does with its Direct3D standard. Direct3D can simulate even 7.1 audio but in order for it to work properly it needs mono (single channel) sound input.

Semp when you plug your stereo headset in does your soundcard allow you to setup the playback device as 5.1? or is stereo the only option?

ha, think i found out what i did wrong.  gonna try again tomorrow.  need to reinstall my sound card.

thats a good point about the "centre" speakers, if it uses a standard 5.1 mix then that setup cant be right surely.

this is the arrangement a 5.1 mix is setup to work with:

     C
 LF     RF
     x
LR       RR

this is the arrangement that the headset has:

LF       RF
LC   x   RC
LR       RR

LF       RF
LC   x   RC

 :headscratch:
Logically LC and RC are wired to a double mono, which makes the sound seem to come from front. My SpeedLink Medusa 5.1 headset has a similar setup, but also a fourth pair of 'subwoofers' with a vibrating effect, also double mono. They share one plug. To be honest I can't tell the difference between them and a good stereo headset with the Audiodemo of my motherboard's Realtek sound circuit. But then again, if my earflaps were protruding, they might separate the front and rear speaker elements to create a better 3d effect...

its not the double mono I was looking at, more that the Centre sounds should be level with or just infront of the LF/RF, not behind them as with the headset - thats the point of the Centre speaker, to give "depth" ie. distance ahead of the Front mix.

however, double mono is also a problem because it is not the same as a sound placed in the centre of a stereo mix ...

Well, I'm not a headphone engineer, so I can't tell if they are just wired to double mono or if they are regular stereo with the front signal panned in the middle to make it sound as it came from 12, or if they have some electric circuit to do the panning. Nevertheless, as long as we don't have a third ear in the middle of our foreheads, it's impossible to make headphones with a single front centre speaker element. I guess the multiple element design works best with your diagram to make a difference between front and back, the centre thing being more like in the movies reproducing mostly the dialogue. In fact, I think the helmet thing in the beginning would beat all headphones measured by the veracity of the 3D experience.

Here is all you need to know about Miles:

"Miles is also designed to tolerate bad input data - it just keeps cranking along until the input data gets better again."

Wrong

Huh? :D

You have no concept of a center channel or a subwoofer it seems.

FYI a subwoofer is a bass driver that provides subsonic frequencies that for most part can not be directly heard, only felt through your body. So by definition any headphone can _not_ have a subwoofer. Well, unless you like to walk around hanging 100 pound heavy boxes on your ears :)

And a center channel is also impossible unless you insert a speaker in your frontal lobe. :)

It's pretty much the definition of a gimmick to have a 'sub' driver in your headphones. Why? Because any standard 40mm headphone driver can produce an ample amount of low range sound since it directly modulates the airspace inside the ear which changes the acoustic laws quite a bit. So any audible sound is covered pretty much automatically. And the real kicker or lack of is the sheer impossibility to produce the low audio thump and vibrations typically associated with subwoofers.
