Gonna Build my wife a new pc
« on: April 07, 2012, 11:18:24 AM »
Here is what I got so far. She will just be using it mainly for web browsing, photo editing/scrapbooking, etc. Nothing too demanding. Any suggestions or changes you would make? Just want a decently quick system for her. I think this will be great but I am worried she will try to compare it to the speed of mine which has an ssd for OS. I dont want to spend a grand for her to think its "slow"

Also can anyone recommend a wall mount for that monitor?

If she complains, tell her she can buy it herself. :)

Seems like a lot for only a 300W psu and no video card.
Actually I think you need a video card since that mobo doesn't have a video chipset.

the z68 boards do have video chipsets. look at the hdmi, dvi, outputs on the board.

Sorry, The graphics are actually in the cpu. The z68 just make them usable. My p67 board on my build doesn't have the outputs for the onboard graphics.

According to what I've read, the integrated "Intel HD Graphics 3000" is roughly equivalent to low-end cards like the Nvidia 9800 XT and AMD HD 5450.

The 300W PSU is more than enough for this computer - there's even enough reserve to add a videocard with up to 75W.
Better try to get RAM without heatspreader - they are just for optics and have more bad than good (they don't help cooling, they are actually keeping some heat inside and are disturbing the air flow of the CPU cooler and sometimes you'll get problems to mount oversized CPU coolers).

Depending on the airflow design of you case you may also want to consider the SS-300ET PSU - larger 120mm fan and should run really quiet.

if in the future you want to get a video card for whatever reason.  then you will have to spend more money to get a better power supply than if you bought one right now.  early reviews for the 2500k cpu are full of people that used it with a 300w and had lots of problems.

also the mobo has a limited number of pci slots and only 4 usb ports on the back,  and that may limit you on possible upgrades later on or even adding more stuff.

you are already spending money on a good computer spend a little more and have a great computer.   If i was you I would spend an extra 100 bucks to get a better mobo and ps.  you may never need it but if yours takes a dump you can always borrow your wife's puter.

The CPU is a 95W max CPU, in realworld test it was about 70-75W under full load. The computer should have a max power consumption not far above 150W and there's plenty of room for a graphics card up to 75W (PCIe limit).
Seasonic is not super-cheap china stuff (nearly exploding if PSU is loaded above 75% rated power), these are quality PSU.

This computer will already be overkill for what she does. I dont want to waste money on features she will never use. The mobo only has 1 pci-e slot and it will go unused already. I will probably change out the ps to the 120mm fan model, I didn't realize the one I selected only had an 80mm. I just like the single 24pin connector instead of the 20+4. If my computer takes a dump I will build a new one and salvage any parts I can for hers  :devil As far as the usb slots go, The current pc she has right now only has 2 accessible in the front (the rear are not accessible where the computer is located.) and those do not get used. I just don't want to spend more $ on things I know she will never use. I may also change the case for one with better airflow, but I dont want to spend a lot on a case as she could care less what it looks like. As long as she can  scrap book with photoshop and get online to check facebook and some porn sites she'll be happy.
