Then what do you consider Track & Field? Or Swimming? Or Speed Skating? Or Skiing? Many other sports would also shoot holes in that theory.

Those aren't true sports either.  People who call those sports do so because of the extreme amount of athleticism involved... i.e. to be good you have to be very much "in shape".  So they are more sports-like than golf is, but they aren't true sports.

Edit: to be fair Speed Skating, most skiiing events, and some track and field events are true sports, because you can prevent people from winning by blocking maneuvers, etc.  But I understand the negative example you are trying to pose.

I played baseball most of my kid life.  I was pitcher and 2nd baseman.  The batting cage did wonders for hitting.  One of the most boring sports to watch if you're not playing.  Wrestling and boxing are some of the toughest sports to play.

I remember a couple of twin brothers that aggravated the heck out of me.  They were like 3 foot tall, and never swung at a ball.  All I had to do is throw strikes.

Heck, I'm throwing a new one out there. It requires massive skill and is often in Competitive stages.

Extreme Bartending.

Don't diss it is just juggling, juggling doesn't have liquid to pour. It takes years to get semi decent. If you don't have hand eye coordination you can kiss it good bye! There are world championships held plus smaller championships. I believe this allows it to fall neatly into the 'Sport' definition.

Fencing and Lawnbowls would be the most skill based sports IMO.

Art of Flight

maybe not the most technically skillful sport, but certainly the one that provides possibly the worst unfortunate concequences when their is a lack of skill...and just so beautifully pure

Irrelevant.  There are two components to what makes an activity a sport.  It needs to require athleticism of some type.  Golf passes that one, chess does not.  And the activity needs to be actively opposed by someone else.  I.e. "defense".  Golf fails this one, chess passes it.  Yes you can lose a golf tournament because someone else has a really good day.  But you can't do anything to prevent them from having a really good day, and that's why golf is just a game.  An activity that only passes one of the two criteria is a game, not a sport, which means chess, although its is actively opposed by someone else, is not a sport.  Many twitch-action computer games are more worthy of being called a sport than golf.  Fishing is more worthy as well, because at least the fish has a say in the matter.

I haven't looked at what the dictionary says about "sport", but that's what I would put in the dictionary, if I were writing one.

Boiler, when you play competitive golf you can play off of others people shots which adds a sort of "Defense" in peoples games. Example being the Playoff hole of the Master's.

But as Masonz has posted your definition is indeed wrong.

Golf takes a whole bunch of skill....to play consistently well.

A couple of weeks ago I faced this 16th hole at Port Royal in Bda (they have played the last 2 PGA Grand Slams there).  235 yards from the blacks....where we decided we should hit from.

I had to hit mine out over the water to get it to come back with the wind.  This shot didn't stay on the green but was in the right bunker pin-high when I got up to it.
