Window Tinting and the Poe-Leese
« on: August 01, 2012, 01:27:28 PM »
Got stopped on I-95 yesterday doing 77 in a 65. Cop was nice enough to let me go with a warning for the speeding, but gave me a repair order because, according to him, my windows were tinted beyond that which Maryland allows (35% minimum light penetration).

Having done some very basic research, I learned that it takes a light meter to properly gauge how much light tinting allows through. Tomorrow I'm taking the car in to find out if he was right, and if so, to get it removed.

Is it really that easy to see the difference between 35% and, say, 20%? The cop used no equipment to do his testing. He just said it was so and that was that. I didn't bother arguing. Just said thanks and drove off.

wanna know what the test says.
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

No, I got the car used from a dealer in NJ. It was an aftermarket job done by the first owner. However, the car is a coupe, and according to NJ law, no tinting is allowed on the front windows at all.

Repair tickets are just that.  MN LEOs carry the equipment, sometimes.  My former boss liked speeding and mouthing off, so he usually got the speeding ticket plus whatever other repair tickets he could get, which was always the tint.  He'd had the company apply the allowed amount in MN, but the installer forgot to calculate that the factory tint added an extra 3% so he was always over by 3% :)

UK plod will stop you for tinted motorcycle visors over 25% (iirc)
They have regularly seized visors, even when worn on bright sunny days.

You can however wear totally black shades under a clear visor with no problem. Strange.

If i ride with black visor I always carry a clear as well and in 15 years of riding i have only had one problem getting stopped.

I suggest therefore wearing a helmet with interchangeable visors and leaving your windows clear :aok

I would bet on not making 1 mile in a car wearing a helmet with a black visor until you were in ARV'ville :lol

As much as I want people to think I'm the Stig, I don't quite want it that badly.

according to NJ law, no tinting is allowed on the front windows at all.

That's not right, they just want to make it easier for camera speed traps to identify people. A long time ago the government tried to ban tinted windows. The medical community who makes and sells eye cataracts disproved that tinted windows are dangerous. They had to otherwise people with cataracts wouldn't be allowed to drive.

I don't know where you're from but CA doesn't allow any window tinting forward of the drivers shoulder, with the exception of a six inch band across the top of the windshield.

oh jeeze...the guys name wasn't harvey, was it? and he wasn't crazy hyper, was he?

window tint is indeed illegal here in nj. on the front door, windows, and the windshield. there are medical exemptions. you need to get approved by a doctor though.

the funny thing with all this is that it doesn't fail inspection anymore.

uumm....tinted windows can indeed be dangerous.

they're illegal here in nj, thanks to a trooper being killed by someone he didn't see in the back of a car........at least that's what i heard.
