i dunno what kind of junk tires you're sellin' me.....
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:26:08 PM »
those were the first words out of a customers mouth this morning as he pulls up in his 86 dodge ramcharger. i go out to look at it. as we're walking out to the truck, he goes "i didn't hit anything this time. no curbs, no holes, nuthin'. it just went flat." we get to the truck, and he opens the rear hatch(and holds it, 'cause he won't replace the struts to hold it). i pull the tire out, and see this.....

tire by 1LtCap, on Flickr

i tell him....you whacked a curb dude, pointing at the evidence. he denies it of course............ :bhead i WISH i had my voice recorder running to record the entire conversation......

Just prior to the tire going flat, was heard from inside the vehicle, "hold my beer and watch this".

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

The guy may well have been padding his story.

On the other hand I have a bit of a bias about tire companies myself. I had a bad tire on my trailer (RV). I'm obsessive about tire pressure. It gets checked every day before I take the rig on the road, even if it's just across the campground. I keep it at max pressure because it's a heavy rig but well under the max load of the tires. I also check the tires for excess heat at every stop on the highway, about every 100 to 150 miles of 60 to 63 MPH speed.

We stopped at a park on a rainy day last August. We smelled burning rubber but had no idea from where. The next morning I check tires and find one of the tires with less than 15k miles on it is no longer flat across the tread but it is bulged in the center all the way around. The edge of the tread is wrinkled where it meets the sidewall and there is a spot where they was melted rubber poking out. This is a rear tire. No curbs, major potholes or road problems yet I have a tread separating. It still has 125 PSI the max recommended pressure. I take it to the tire shop after swapping it out and the guy doesn't even let me take it off the truck. He just says that I ran it under inflated and it's not a warranty issue. If I don't like his opinion I can take it up with Goodyear, then he walks away.

These are not cheap tires, about $430 a pop now. They are commercial grade 17.5" H rated trailer tires. Good year had a major problem with their earlier trailer tires a G rated 16" tires a few years back. It seems like these are doing the same thing.

And this is why I wouldn't do what you do Cap. Don't get me wrong...I love to twist wrenches, do it for a living as a matter of fact, but having to deal with the stupid public would drive me nuts.

And Maverick, after a couple of lines into your post I was wondering whether those were Goodyears or not.  :lol I had similar problems with that brand myself in the past. Over priced junk if ya ask me. I never buy Goodyear again. And haven't for 10 or 15 years now.

I bought some Douglas GT truck tires before. Never again.

Out of two, one developed bulge in the tread and that could be felt while driving and was considered defective when I took it back in. The replacement they gave me did the exact same thing. Ended up replacing them with Tracker II tires and no problems since then

that sounds like a real butwipe of a service guy that you had to deal with. there is such a thing as defective tires, and what you describe sounds like just that.

And this is why I wouldn't do what you do Cap. Don't get me wrong...I love to twist wrenches, do it for a living as a matter of fact, but having to deal with the stupid public would drive me nuts.
it's something that i am VERY surprised that i got good at.

My bike tyres are puncture magnets VFR 800, RIDING HOME BRAND NEW FROM SHOWROOM, puncture in rear tyre from debris left by hedge trimmers.

VTR 1000 2 rears in 2 mnths from bolts

ST1100 in my garage right now. New Avon rear with a bolt through the centre :bhead :bhead :bhead

Most major automotive companies have a little guy driving around on what is effectively a wheeled electromagnet to collect most of this junk from their sites, can we just consider a similar idea for the roads? Think of the cash you would make selling all this metal as scrap.......

wait a sec :bolt:

I seen the scrape marks, but didnt look enough at the hole where the valve stem was. Either he nailed a solid object pretty hard or tried to pry the tire off the rim for some unknown reason and damaged the rim and broke off the stem.

On the right side of the picture, is that debries on the bottom right of the hole or is the rim cracked there too?

On the tires, the paperwork shows "Douglas Performance GT"

What the hell did he hit to take the valve stem off?

And at least he doesn't set up his shots correctly, else it sounds like a bunch of injuries to pedestrians would occur.

For the love of god, don't tell him anything about pulling less G's, or he might bet the hang of it.
