those were the first words out of a customers mouth this morning as he pulls up in his 86 dodge ramcharger. i go out to look at it. as we're walking out to the truck, he goes "i didn't hit anything this time. no curbs, no holes, nuthin'. it just went flat." we get to the truck, and he opens the rear hatch(and holds it, 'cause he won't replace the struts to hold it). i pull the tire out, and see this.....

i tell him....you whacked a curb dude, pointing at the evidence. he denies it of course............ :bhead i WISH i had my voice recorder running to record the entire conversation......

this discussion reminds me of the worst tires i ever had the displeasure of experiencing...the firestone 721. worse than even the uniroyal tiger paw and the private labels made like it. you could look at them wrong and the belts would separate.

It's obvious that he hit something, and more to the point, a curb.  I've seen this type of damage more than a few times.  From what I can see on the tire itself and damage on the rim, I would guess he fishtailed it into a curb, or nipped a median in an intersection.

CAP, do you remember where this tire was?  Driver/Passenger/Front/Rear?

I put a hole in my right front tire last night, skimmed a curb.  :furious :bhead

I get out of the car and walked around to make sure it was ok and sure enough tire is hissing away, so I break out the jack. Been calling tire places all morning  :furious :furious :bhead :bhead

(sorry for throwing in my dilemma)

You hit a "bad" curb.  They tend to do that.  Otherwise, you did more than just "skimmed" it, or you have crappy tires. :)

A "bad" curb is one broken up, cracked, bits of jagged concrete and/or rebar sticking out.  A "good" curb  is one that isn't busted up, good shape.  From what I can see in the picture, op hit a good curb.  Strike on the sidewall is smooth, with (from the picture) VERY little scarring.  He hit it hard enough to allow the rim to reach the curb.  Doesn't matter if curb is good or bad at that point.  Rim makes contact with curb, it WILL mess it up.

The curb was cracked and by no means smooth when I went and looked later. My friend that came to help with my problem said he had done the exact same thing a couple a weeks ago to his brand new truck with brand new tires but he tore the sidewall on a piece of rebar.

Ouch.  Rebar is nasty stuff.  The bright side is, ye didn't damage your rim, nor did your friend from the sounds of it.

I've flatten a tire on a curb before.  Didn't have much choice as I had to avoid a collision that would've had my arse in bad shape.  There is a nice little snake-y bit I had to travel through and it was raining really good.  Fool in a dump truck comes barrelin along down the center.  Not much time for me to do anything but maneuver, and I pulled her to the right, straight into some nasty curb.  Sure enough, ripped a 6" hole through the sidewall.  If it was just some smuck in a car or truck, I'd ran his arse down, but when it comes to something like a dump truck, even I will avoid that.  He may or may not have been loaded, meaning he may or may not have weighed as much as I do (small dump truck), but wouldn't matter because he weighs enough and is made of real metal.

I found a great source for off road tires at a fraction of the cost of name brands. Treadwright. All they make are off road tires, and they've been doing it for a long time.

These are "remolds". Using unused or little used carcasses, they x-ray and inspect the donor tires carefully, accepting only those in perfect condition. They then cut off the tread, mold on a base layer of rubber and then using standard industry tire molds, mold on a new tread. They meet the same Federal standards as new tires.

Magazine reviews have been excellent. User reviews have been full of praise. A buddy of mine just finished up the major club off road run. This was a week-long off road adventure over some of the most challenging terrain that can be found. My buddy elected to take off his Toyos and run a set of 35" Treadwright "Guard dogs" with "Kedge Grip" compound. Aside from hundreds of miles of moderate to extreme terrain with a lot of mud, he drove his 2010 Wrangler 2 door nearly 3,500 miles to and from the event. The tires performed extremely well, with great traction and the design worked very well in deep, gooey mud. He suffered no tire failures or damage whatsoever. Not so for some of the others running name brand rubber.

A few months ago, I wanted to buy a new spare (having had to use mine when I cut a sidewall on a sharp rock). So, rather than spend nearly $300 for a spare, I ordered a 33" tire from Treadwright. I ordered the Kedge Grip compound. Kedge Grip is a patented compound that has ground glass and crushed walnut shell in the rubber. According to 4 Wheeler magazine, Kedge Grip offered the best snow and ice traction of any non-studded tire they've ever tested. I specifically asked for their "Warden" tread pattern, which is identical to the BFG AT KO. Sure enough, I received the tire and it was a BFG AT KO carcass, so new it still had the blue on the raised white lettering. This load E rated tire cost me just $156.

I took the tire to my local Goodyear shop for installation and balancing. They didn't realize that it was a remold until I told them. Only 1 ounce of weight was required to balance the tire, which really surprised them.

Having seen the quality and having a friend who throughly abused the tires, I'm ordering a full set of the same tire specifically for winter use (they carry the snowflake indicating severe winter service tires). I'll mount them on a set of 8.5"x17" steel wheels and put my Cooper STs (on aluminum mags) away for the winter. Budget high traction winter tires, still very capable off road too. My Coopers (which are wearing like iron) will go back on in the spring. They (the Coopers) are great in moderate mud, all kinds of sand and deep snow. They are not very good on packed snow and ice, because they have very little syping (being a hybrid mud/terrain type).

So, those of you who may be looking for budget off road tires with first rate quality, check out Treadwright before buying...

Last fall I went to a tire shop to order a set of studded tires.  The salesman said they didn't have any but swore up and down that these Firestone tires they had grip well on snow as well as ice.

I asked him if he really expected me to believe a rubber compound had been invented that grips ice.  He said "no, but they're the best tire you can get for snow".

I drove back to my hometown and  bought a set of BF's from an older kid who ruined my basketball hoop when we were younger.  He remembered that too and gave me a great deal on a set with a 60K mile warranty :D.
