I wonder if the torrent sites and the loss of revenue due to piracy is part of the reason for switching to renting instead of ownership?

I wouldn't worry about it. Google declared war on Microsoft. Microsoft is doomed.

I can do withouth having offline driving navigation from Nokia (navteq) . And there is Bing I can definitely do withouth google. Where the user is the product.

The reason is they can make more money from renting than selling.  The whole 'cloud' idea is not about making things more efficient, it is about making more money.

I just installed office 2003 on a new computer.  I had the activation key and using win7 on this one

O2k3 works fine on Win7 x64. Can't speak of Win8 though but who's using this BS OS anyway?

BTW O2k3 has just a license key, no activation. Activation was introduced with O2k7.

I'm not aware of any edition requiring activation (connect to M$ sites to verify license), all I've seen so far only need a valid license key entered during installation.
