What an EPIC video......On a serious note . I was asking in an online discussion about Nascar and safety. I wouldn't want to go watch a race as there doesn't appear to be much room for error to keep the debris off the crowd . The safety barrier worked but not completely and the number of almost going over the cage was just scary.  Low behold I got told that I was stupid and that Nascar was THE safest motorsport ever (?)  .   How would some of you guys change things .  It seems only the super race ways has this problem . Would it be better to have the crowd inside the track and the pits to the outside?  That way the cars are more likely to not hit anyone in an accident as there wont be anyone there and the crowd will have a better view .

The odds of you getting hurt at a race very slim. I think in the incident Saturday that the gate is what caused the problems. Had that section of fence NOT been the one hit I don't think you would have seen the car tear it up so bad, nor would you have seen as many parts fly over the fence. You can check here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nlytg1bYI0

and see Carl Edwards get into the fence at Talladega  While his car does get tore up it isn't as bad as the one Saturday, nor can you see as much debris flying over the fence.

Just like at any sporting event there is always some degree of danger. Heck you could be in the grandstands at a baseball game and end up getting trampled by a bunch of fans trying to catch a homerun ball!

I agree with Fugitive. They may have to look also at the way the front clip is attached to the Drivers cockpit. When you had a full length frame from bumper to bumper you didn't have the separation like this. Not saying that this extremely violent impact would not of sent things flying.

I was at a minor league game where some poor lady was not paying attention to the game and sitting on the 1st base line.
That knock on her noggin could be heard throughout the ballpark as she was carried out on a stretcher.  :uhoh

Yeah I've seen that vid before .   What about a second catch fence or a  netting over the crowd  ?  OHHHH just had a mazine idea  armoured umbrellas for people in the lower stand ...............  :noid     What if you took the lowest stand away and build more stands around the circuit   this way people will have a better view  and a larger area for debris to fly into that wont  cause issues .

The risk maybe low but the results could be horrific . Risk assessments (which i've had a lot of experience in when handling deadly chemicals)  often say the chance of something going wrong is very low but then the effect can be very  dangerous (or deadly when I was handling ammonium sulphate) . It's the old what if thing .

in the concentration I was spraying (as an ingredient of a fire retardant)   it could melt your lungs  or if you spilled the bottle the fumes would burn your lung walls .  pretty nasty stuff .

Well i just hope people got their giggles in for now, I just got word from my sister my brother in law and nephew were at the race and they were 2 of the 28 injured. My brother in law suffered lacerations to his head requiring 10 staples and my nephew requires 13 stitches in his neck. Though they were not injured severely this shows that no matter what, or where you go you can get hurt. The people from NASCAR and Daytona have been super gracious and they have already told them their medical treatment and expenses are covered by the track and NASCAR. Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Little E and many other members of teams came by the hospital to see if they were OK.

Kyle Larson stopped in to see all involved and from what my nephew said he was more worried about them than himself, he did suffer some injuries in the crash.

As per safety at a track, NASCAR has a high thought of safety. I was a track safety firefighter in NHIS and we were responsible not only for the racers but we were responsible for the fans safety. What happened at Daytona was a "freak" accident. They had cars get into the fence before and this never happened, look at the truck race where Geoff Bodine did approx the same thing. When Carl Edwards went airborne into the fence and people were hurt they changed the way the fence was constructed. Granted at times it seems like they are a re-active to safety but they are also proactive on the most part.

Sorry bout the rant but I just couldn't sit idly by while immature comments were made, just remember, those hurt, have family members too.

Couldn't have said it better myself!  Hopefully your brother-in-law and nephew make good recoveries from their injuries and continue to go to races and enjoy the great sport (yes, I said SPORT).

I don't usually get involved in flame wars like this is turning into, but honestly it looks like RPM loves racing, and is using guilt-trip tactics to defend it.  In my opinion he is taking it too far, but I just ignore that sort of thing.

After all, all fan-boi's must die, and that includes NASCAR.
I called them out for joking when there were people injured. Red apologized saying he didn't realize.  Case closed as far as I'm concerned.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2013/03/02/nascar-daytona-crash-investigation-fence/1958975/

Nascar is looking at the access gate where the wreck happened.  From video evidence, most debris, including the tire, came through the breach in the fence.

What i thought was a piece of debris (tire) going over the fence, was actually through and flying upward on the other side of the fence.

About every 4th baseball game I have attended over my lifetime features at one instance of EMT taking people to the hospital after taking a foul ball to the domepiece.

I thought the same thing. Now that you see it again they need to beef up the fence. It went through that chain link fence like a hot knife through butter.
