NZ up 6 to 1 over USA. Three more wins for NZ and the Cup goes back to NZ.

Proportionally to how many times we've competed we're doing pretty well ;)

But then again the US is not that experienced in competing in 'world cups' where anyone but themselves turn up  :devil

Not really. NYYC has 25 wins and 1 loss, RPYC has record of 1 win and 3 losses and RNZYS 2-2, soon to be 3 wins, 2 losses. That's 4th in winning percentage, behind the NYYC (25-1), SDYC (3-1) and SNDG (2-1)

Urgh, I guess I gave too much credit to Kiwis. Must be one of the biggest chokes in history of sports.

Not choked. The US team just finally figured out how to race their boat.


Last I remember a 12 meter boat didn't ever have to be a single hull. It just had to go by the formula. They would have DQ'ed a boat that outclassed the rest but it just had to be 12 meter or under. Hell they raced a tri-hull not to long ago. Would be interesting to see if they could foil a single hull.
I don't think they could go fast enough to lift it out of the water.

If I recall the AC boats in '87 had a winged keel, but they weren't intended to lift the boat out of the water but to instead enable the boat to carry more sail for a given wind condition.

Real surprised that the Americans were able to pull this one out as in the first few matches they seemed outclassed by the Kiwi's.

It was allowing that winged keel that led us down the slippery slope to the "flying cats" we have today. It is not 12 Meter yacht racing, it is my $100,000,000M computer design vs your $100,000,000M computer design. Ever wonder why there's only 4 boats now?

Nah, last race illustrated the american boat was just to fast... the automated foil system definitely gave it the edge - it's debatable whether an electrical automated trimming system is in the spirit of yachting but it had already been declared legal. Ironically there are a lot of kiwi's behind the design and build of the USA boat (word is they flew a 30 person boat design team over from NZ when oracle was losing).
