Aces High on console PS4 or xbox
« on: December 01, 2013, 11:27:22 AM »
I know a lot of people will recoil in horror at the thought of this but would it really be so bad? So long as you can plug a keyboard mouse and a joystick in, I wouldn't mind paying 350 quid for a ps4 I can play aces high on and a lot of other games, performance wise how would something like this run Aces High and would it be easier for HTC to develop on??

I can't speak to development costs, but both the PS4 and XBoxOne are fully capable of running AH.

There may be problem costs though.  I recall one developer who declined to patch a game breaking bug on the XBox360 because Microsoft would have charged $40,000+ to send out the patch whereas they easily patched the PC version because there was no additional cost to do so.  I don't know if Sony does anything like that or if Microsoft has backed off of that stuff to be more indie friendly.

It wouldn't be easy or inexpensive for HTC to develop AH for the next gen consoles.  HTC would first need to modify the existing AH engine for it to work on consoles and even though the latest next gen consoles are closer to PC specs for gaming, HTC would still need to 'dumb' down AH for it to work on consoles.  There is also the increased cost for customers, for example since AH is a subscription based game, if you want to play it on the Xbox1, you'd need to pony up for a XBox Live Account on top of your AH subscription.

I don't think it would need to be dumbed down actually.  PS3 and XBox360, sure, but not on the newest generation.  Both of them are significantly more powerful than my PC.  Most XBox users have an XBox Live account and Sony doesn't charge for the PS4 equivalent.

The questions I would have would be about the market being worth it.  Do enough console users have a keyboard and joystick to make the expense of developing for Unix (the server runs on Unix), Windows, PS4 and XBone worth it?  I am skeptical that there would be enough players gained from those systems to make it worth the expense.

Yes it would.  For example, we're currently developing a PS4 version of our latest MMO (FFXIV) and while it's not as dumbed down as the PS3 version we've already released, the PS4 version still had to be dumped down because of the limitations of the console.

IIRC, most of the XBLA accounts on the Xbox 360 are "Silver" account, which are free but limited, compared to the "Gold" account which is subscription.  Xbox1 does away with the Silver accounts, so now all XBLA accounts for the Xbox1 are 'Gold' and you have to pay if you want premium online content.  Sony does charge for PSN Plus accounts (though not for standard PSN accounts) however, the difference is that Sony allows the developer to decide if a game requires a PSN Plus account or a free standard PSN account, Microsoft doesn't allow a similar option for developers.  This was the main reason why we didn't develop FFXIV for Xbox360/Xbox1.

How does it need to be dumbed down?  Do you mean to support use of a gamepad instead of mouse and keyboard?  I don't think AH would be playable on a gamepad without the keyboard as well.  If the keyboard is required for the game then I can't see how it would need to be dumbed down.  I can't see how it would be graphically limited when most PCs also run at 1080p nowadays.

Dear god no!

All we'll see is planes jumping up and down, dodging from side to side while the players all yell "Sword, sword, sword, sword" in high pitched annoying voices.

Never played a game online on the PS3 or Xbox?

Take Halo for example. All the tards in the arena jump up and down from side to side to make it harder to shoot them. They pick up laser swords and run around flooding the team channel chanting "sword sword sword".
So all you see in your scope is a bunch of pansies jumping around and all uncoordinated as they can't talk for the chanting.  Bring AH to those consoles and that's the quality of gamer we'll get.

AH doesn't have swords and you cannot jump, dodge sideways or any of the crap you mentioned.  The player base would be hard put to become more immature than it already is.  You also have to factor in the $14.95/mo fee that weeds out a lot of the guys who behave particularly egregiously.

How so?  I haven't seen significant behavioral changes from 2000 until now.

No, the reason not to do this would be because it is highly unlikely to repay its development costs.

Hmmm.

Two questions.

#1 Would it be possible to have the next gen consoles play on the same servers as we PCs do?  (There must be something making it impossible, perhaps different programs?) Just curious.

#2  While the idea is intriguing, and the next gen consoles could handle it.  What do you guys think the costs would be for this?

NO NO NO and NO

Seriously?  The actions and immature nature of the players here are already sky high.

Think about it, most who play are adults 18+ (most are seniors).  Yet they act like children.  You would think that by the time you are near your "elder" years that you would learn patience or tolerance.  Even how to type .squelch <name>.  It really is amazing to me how the community acts, as a whole, both to outsiders and to each other.  Bashing each other over the head with purses, words flying etc. Then the newer generation is introduced and you call them out on the carpet for the same things that you guys do  :rofl

I think something that HTC will have to do though, is to expand the limitations of the squelch list. (So if it's say.. 20 now, expand it to 100 or more).  I have only used the squelch system once, so I don't need it. But for those who use it, will definitely be thankful.

While bmused was talking about Halo (Which is completely different than Aces high), he does have a point.  The maturity level of the xbox/playstation crowd is... low.   Not to mention HTC would be exposing their community to the horrors of PS/XBOX community.  (I would write a long article on that alone). To keep it short, go search about it on youtube  :uhoh

But, perhaps the community doesn't reflect the game entirely.  Take Call of Duty for example: Same engine (For what, 4 games now?), similar/same weapons, similar/same storyline.. and the community went from game to game, and yet it still sells well.  So perhaps those in that "console community" are used to themselves and it won't effect their gameplay.

It is a unique thought, that I don't believe has been on these boards.. ever.     I think we should look at this and not be too hasty.
If we have something to show we will & do post shots, if we have nothing new to show we don't.

I can only guess that the future of online gaming is some version of these TV consoles. I'm not an expert but everything is moving in this direction. Just bought a TV for Christmas, which has wi-fi built in for Facebook, Hulu, Netflix and other online functions. There will always be some version of a desktop though that seems to be the trend. And a large market to chase.

I think there would be a problem with a lack of suitable controls as well.  A flight stick is not very common for a console, and neither is a keyboard which are very much a large part of AH.

Yes, I am aware there are other ways to play AH, and you could get those two items for consoles..
