everybody miss the part where the owner of the dogs put the dogs down, he also apologized extremely and paid for all the vet bills.  the dogs are dead.

Where in my post do I even mention dealing with the dog?  I had already seen that the dogs were dealt with, or I would have quoted Meatwad's response (though the response still holds value).  You missed what I was commenting on.  I'll make it simple; I was commenting on puller letting it escalate to what it did.

Yeah, I apologize for that.  I should have also worded the ending bit better as well.  "I'll cut to the point:" is a much better way to say something versus, "I'll make it simple:".  When I originally typed it, even after reading it over a couple of times, it didn't seem like an attack, nor was it intended.  Reading it now though, it is worded poorly and could be mistaken as such.  I apologize for that as well.

When I was a small one(long ago) we lived many miles from any town in rural Minn..our 'driveway' from gravel county road was 5 miles long. My father brought home a Shetland pony in back of his 4 door Studie Lark. Pooped seat out, laid down moving quilts and lead it in shutting doors. $25 w/saddle tack and wishes from previous owner to never see that '#$@#^*(^^(^' again... He fenced in area around our barn, made a stall, and 'I' had a pony.
Twice a german shepherd got into it's corral, chased pony about and it leaped over the fence, the barbed wire at top ripping it's belly pretty good. Dog had collar, came when called, nearby Dr owned. My dad took it home first time..owner said tough beans about $50(1960 dollars) vet bill..
Second time was about 8 am on crisp morning, barn was 300 or so yards from house. We could hear the dog and pony..dad got out his Mauser, laid it across the back porch rail...and shot that dog.
We walked back to barn, gathered up and repenned pony but couldn't find the shepherd, just some blood spots.
Later that day State trooper my dad knew came by, arrested dad, dog had been hit behind shoulder breaking it's back and crawled probably 6-8 miles home. Dr had sworn out warrant, had to put dog down. Dad made bail on own recognizance.
At the hearing judge patiently listen to Dr, beloved dog, etc, etc..listened to my dad. Than gave his judgement. Farm stock, of which he considered this dog one, were responsibility of owner to keep on their own land. If the owner had demonstrated an inability, or lack of desire to keep his stock on his land it belonged to person whose land it was on. He said my dad had shot his own dog, as he was entitled to do.          JGroth

Couple months later I was w/my dad and man walked by house w/his beagle.....he and dad struck up conversation..man suddenly said "Your Mr XXXXX aren't you, fellow that shot that dog?" My dad said he was..there was a pause, the stranger said"See that beagle there, he's my dog. If you see him on your land without me...you shoot him, as he's doing me no good if he runs off." And he and his dog strolled off.

First day that animal came out me aggressively on my property and I would have shot it.

This.

edit - Glad it worked out, sad it was after your family and pets took some losses.

I had a neighbor with an aggressive dog. Well, it was actually his daughters and she'd dumped it on him.  In any case, even though I was within city limits, if that dog ended up in my yard my plan was to exit my house carrying a bat and a pistol.  The dog would get the bat once, and if it kept coming it would get the pistol.  I've got NOTHING for a critter that comes at me or my family, or challenges me on my own property.  The only reason to try the bat first is to appease the local cops and judge when they arrest me for discharging a firearm within city limits.

It never came to that... he left the dog out one night and it barked continuously from about 4 in the afternoon until 2am.  At 2am I put on my fuzzy bunny slippers and walked around the block to his house and pounded on the door until he got up, then I politely yelled at him through his closed door to shut his dog up.  After that the dog stayed in the garage until he got rid of it a few months later.

I am not against shooting an aggressive animal by no means...but from the time that guy let his dogs out of his truck when they moved in they were aggressive...my neighbor and I tried to get his dogs to be ok with mine and tried to get them used to my daughter....like most loyal dogs when this guy was around his dogs were ok...wouldn't growl but you knew not to stick your hand down there...when dude was gone it was like what Caesar Millan The Dog Whisperer says "the dog has gone into predator mode"  they would slink around in the tall grass...you would get that feeling...look up and there one of them would be...stalking you in the grass...real creepy...and my wife and I really do feel bad because he put them down...but bottom line is dude should have shot them suckers or put them in a kennel after they killed the cat...baby's Chihuahua doing good...she was outside yesterday acting like a dwarf pit bull with her hair stuck up in the air...

I love dogs. I have two Bull Mastiffs and a mutt get treated like royalty. The last thing in the world I'd want to do is kill a dog. After reading what you described, I'd put them down.

Puller....

I don't want to be disrespectful but basically you are prioritizing your neighbors dog(s) over your daughter, dog and cat. How lame can you be?! Why don't you just shoot your daughter and get it over with. Or, grow some balls and shoot your neighbors dog. This was lame the moment you started to type. Your ultimately responsibility is to provide and protect your family. You are in a gross state of failure.

This is what I was thinking...  Would have worded it a little differently, but the point is established.

I was in the park the other day with Blitz, my 85 lb German Shepard. I had him on a 50' check leash and I saw a family with two young kids coming. I could see the parents were kind of anxious looking but as I always do I held up one hand and my dog sat down on the side of the path and didnt move until the family had passed and I allowed him to.

Ive gotten many positive comments on the level of training my 15 mo old dog has. I would not have a dog like that if I didnt have the knowledge to train him and have absolute control over him. Unfortunately owners like me are a rarity. You wouldnt believe some of the incidents ive had with knuckleheads and their knucklehead dogs. I just had one a week ago.

But I wouldnt shoot a dog unless I absolutely had to. A dog on someone elses land being a threat to anothers family or livestock should be shot. If he's just wandering and not being threatening I'd call the neighbor and give him a chance. Maybe ONE chance but I dont like shooting dogs. Dogs can get loose, get lost, and not be a threat to anyone.

I dont like to kill anything just cause i can.
