The problem is that, then, you're sinking to the level of the lest skilled.
How is using a fast plane to head off the possibility of the opponent running away "sinking to the level of the less skilled"?
Higher speed allows one to force or deny the engagement, but by itself it doesn't do anything to help you win once you are into the dogfight. For instance, if you compare the 109F to the P-51D, the 109 out-turns and out-climbs the P-51D rather badly. Given equal pilots, the 109F wins a dogfight handily. The only advantage the P-51D really has is the speed to run down more planes, such as other P-51s. The P-51 can run down another Mustang or a SpitXVI, but actually hanging with those planes in maneuvers and winning the fight will be more difficult than it would be in the better-turning, better-climbing 109F.
IOW, taking the Mustang over the 109F will allow one to force the fight against more opponents, but
more skill, not less, will be required to win the fight using a decidedly worse-turning, worse-climbing plane.
As for the rest, you are claiming that people who continue to play the game and pay their $15 a month are killing it...I'm more inclined to think anyone who quits because all sorties don't go to their liking is hurting the game more.
EDIT: I really don't want a noted player like Latrobe to quit either. This bodes not well for my favorite game's future. However, I offered a workable solution to the problem he stated, and he rejected it. *shrug*
