Might need a new router
« on: September 17, 2014, 07:37:43 AM »
I have been having trouble getting disconnected a lot lately, and had purchased 2 new and different brand modems.  Didn't help at all.  My current router is a Netgear R6300, which was tops a year or two ago so I never even suspected it may be a problem.  I have run my computer now at night with the router bypassed and never got disco'd.

So in looking around I see there are routers for normal homes and routers for gamers and hd streaming and stuff.  What would be a good router to get nowdays?

Why didn't you get a modem with a built in router? If it has one all you need is a switch if you have to split the connection on other rooms. I use the built in 4 port router in my modem to connect nearby devices and then use a HP procurve switch to split the connection on the other side of the house.

Did you try resetting the router to clear all the settings? Should initially only have to set up the name and password for wireless to see if that helps.

Make sure the router isn't overheating. I had one a few years back that was and it would randomly reset itself when it decided it was too hot which got to be rather annoying! After some modification it's now my emergency backup.

in the us some routers provided by service providers are easily hacked.  for example I use a time warner modem but their router is one of the easiest to hack.

Nobody forces you to use their modem you can just buy an unlocked modem from the market and plug that in.

they're more expensive that if you were to buy a stand alone router.

The op already bought 2 modems for nothing so price is obviously not the issue.

Yes, price is not an issue.  Now if you guys were buying a new router, is there any specific ones that you have in mind?

I would get a pro model straight away if price is no problem. Make sure it's a 'non blocking' type so that its garanteed to be able to push maximum traffic at all ports simultaneously. Consumer routers are often only good for a couple of ports of traffic, then they choke.

Your pingplot indicates that the problem is the internet and not your router.

He's also not been disco'd when using the router. I'm guessing his router is fine for everything else except AH which needs a good internet connection.

It was weird, I would get discoed for a month, progressively getting worse almost each evening, finally getting discoed every few minutes to maybe twice in a minute.  Tyfoo suggested  to bypass my router and see what happened, since I had installed a new dsl modem.  So I bypassed the router as the modem and router are both on my desk.  I played for hours then after bypassing the router.  I had sent in a complaint to my isp about my problem.  The next night my speed seems to be a bit faster, and haven't been disco'd using my router.  I'm thinking they must have checked and did something.

Also a tech wants to come out and check things.  I may end up with a spare modem, but the old one I was using was getting pretty hot, and the new one is running barely warm.  I dunno, Im not a tech person and I maybe should have called them first, but a couple years ago when I had a problem they didn't want to help at all.  Anyway I may get fixed up here in a day or two and be ok.
