It honestly depends.  If I see it, and I'm in a position where I can return it, then I will.  If I've ever been sent one and I didn't respond, I didn't see it and/or am too busy to send one back.

This about covers it. I never intentionally not return a salute

Sometimes I end up out of one fight and right into the next. Also its hard to return a <S> if engaged with multiple cons.
Also sometimes right after a fight I may go AFK while either in the tower or more often then not on climbout

Yes, so much so that they actually go out of their way avoid the combat part of the combat sim...

No excuse, common courtesy says you respond. I try to salute anyone I get a kill on, not that there is very many, or anyone that gave me a good fight or a great shot. :old:

Nobody is returning my salutes. How wude!    :salute  :old:

(I stopped habitually saluting back and forth with the exception of seeing old friends years ago -   not that I play as often. Try not to take offense and just think of me as silently respecting you as I try to keep my situational awaremess intact.)

Can't think of a time I have ever not returned a salute.  I'm sure I missed a few being preoccupied with trying to undo whatever hopeless spot I put my poor plane in, but if I see them, I return them.

There are times in life when being respectful, polite and courteous needs to be set aside.  A silly video game isn't one of those times on my list.

A lot of players have 200 turned off; not because of the salutes, but because of the overwhelming amount of drivel due to some players needing to post every tepid little thought that flits across their frontal lobe.

Personally I have the chat windows seperated into four seperate little windows, stacked on top of each other: 1 window is SYSTEM, next is 200, then HOST, and finally COUNTRY on bottom. that way the channels are separated.

Hetz, salutes aren't on 200 if they're done by .s <name>, I believe they can't even be muted (I may be wrong on this, haven't checked)

Hmm, I had 200 muted for the longest time, and recalled not getting salutes i thought because of that.

If they type '<S> Hetzer' in 200, you wouldn't see it.  If they did a '.s hetzer' you would.  I can't remember if turning off 'system' in your chat window gets rid of the .s messages or not.  I know you can remove country channel that way, but can't remember where that system wide stuff falls.

I try to return all salutes if I see them no matter what the circumstances. If I loose an especially good fight I will normally salute. I don't salute fights that I win because I have been accused of gloating in the past when I did that.

Do you salute your "other half" when he or she trounces you in a pillow fight?  Not meaning to offend, but I'll salute when I feel like it and won't when I don't.  I never prefer to in a game, I did enough saluting in real life.  Besides, whether you win and I lose or vice versa, ultimately I couldn't care less.... I'm still gonna log off and forget everything that happened before the next time I log on.  That said, about the only time I DO salute is because it's a quick, abbreviated mass acknowledgement to "way to go's".

Most of the time I will return a salute.

Instances where I won't...
You did something lame.
I completely missed the it because I was occupied with something else or AFK.
And least likely...I simply, for one reason or another, don't like you.

Salutes can be turned off just like 200 and many players that are squelched, to bad we can only do 10
