I'm pretty sure a gunner could fire the guns while taking off... if he really wanted to. Why cant we in AH?

I think it might have something to do with driving your bomber out of the bushes at the end of a runway fragging everyone spawning.

I'm pretty sure a gunner could fire the guns while taking off... if he really wanted to. Why cant we in AH?

I suspect that it was because during the war, all on board guns were stowed in a safe manner, with the chamber empty for safety reasons. No one touched a weapon until the aircraft commander announced on the inter com to release your weapons, lock and load.
I see the point though, as I to have been killed on the runway, taking off. I TO, would like to be able to fire the guns when sitting defenseless on the ground.

I wonder if we'd see squadrons of land based B-17s\B-29s lining up around a de-ACT'd base.  Perhaps even a fleet surrounding a city for added air defense.

... or a small fleet of ditched B-17s to protect a CV.

sigh..... if only life were so simple... back then fields had auto 88's and 37mm gguns which were increasing in number with every revision

Since then 88's have gone and come back as player controlled guns and some more defences still added.

Plus in those days player numbers were increasing and (according to HT) vulching was a valid and laudable tactic agin any player upping under enemy cap by any player who was either fool enough to risk the gguns or had gone to the trouble to kill them.

100% of vulches on take off are avoidable. 

Yes it is inconvenient to not be able to up from a capped field.  Sorry.

Yes.
