Twisty Throttle

Twisty Throttle ; has anyone ever seen one, I know of the twisty flightsticks, just never heard of one like that for the throttle, was thinking the other night about it and something like that would seem to work well on my set up.

The normal axis for the throttle would be fwd and aft but would also twist on the vertical as well.


Don't ask me why, I just have strange thoughts on this stuff sometimes    rudder pedels broke awhile back and was thinking I would like to try something different for the rudder control.

Thrustmaster HOTAS X has a rocker switch on the throttle that can be used for rudder control.

People talk toejam about those rocker rudders, but I loved my x45 with rocker rudder, it was much more precise than a twisty stick IMO.

Can't tell how Saitek does, but on my Thrustmaster TopGun Afterburner (older version of the HotasX) the rocker doesn't center without a nudge to the opposite direction than what was used before. I have been using pedals for a decade or more, so I tried to find other uses for the rocker, like left-right and front-back. It worked, but as I said, it didn't return to the original position. Having the crosshair slightly off and partly invisible wasn't something to love in a fight... Another thing is that the rocker on the HotasX isn't in a convenient place if the throttle is on the table. Placed on the chair level it would be more ergonomic. But of course that is just my personal experience, YMMV.

Basically I like the idea of a twisty throttle, but after some thinking I believe it would cause major wrist issues. Do this simple excercise: Place your fist on the table knuckles up and twist it sideways to the extents so that your arm doesn't move. Repeat a dozen times. You'd probably find some muscles you didn't know you had. Doing that for hours daily would most likely cause a carpal tunnel syndrome or something similar in a few weeks. <edit>

This was a long bellybutton time ago when the x45's were still current, I guess I'm weird but I Tried pedals for a couple years couldnt get used to it. I prefer twisty to rudder pedals, I've never been able to do well with pedals, I guess I'll hang on to it then since that's a complaint with the rocker rudders as i said that was ages ago I just use an x52 these days. I've heard thrustmaster is good but after spending 600 bucks for a paperweight in the form of the original hotas cougars I never went back to them.I already know I have carpal tunnel, although it's not near as bad as it used to be before I got a proper gaming mouse. YMMV of course, but I haven't noticed ah to bother with me too much at least not with the few hours I can manage a month.

As for ergonomics, the best position for the hand is sideways like it naturally hangs on the side. Thus the more slanted a mouse is, the better it ergonomically is. They even make mouses (mice???) that are turned on their side, as well as mouses looking like a small joystick. Another healthy thing using a mouse is to make it as fast as possible, thus minimizing the sideways twisting of the wrist. For the same reason there's keyboards that are split and the halves are slanted in the form of an A

Here is what I have been using ATM , you see the throttle on the LH side ergonomically comfortable to me, if it twisted on the vertical it would probably work well for a rudder , the pedals are no longer there , broke a few months ago.

I agree with you Bizman and even set my sticks were they felt comfortble to me while sitting.

To be fair... The twisty stick is a low low bar to set. It's better than nothing... and that's it.

it what way did the peds break?

they are fixable...of course depending on how they broke.

Teenages brothers raging their loss while playing " mario smash brothers " while using the chair as a seat, as you can imagine I was not amused, teenagers are now Verboten in the chair.

 I 'll grab some CH pedals or something soon, unfortunately AH sits low on the priority list when it comes to new purchase items.

To be honest, the saitek pedals felt a little " klunky " to me, think I will try the CH pros next.

They broke at the vertical stem, I did try and epoxy but the stem to the slider base is the weak point and they broke again after a couple fixes.......
