Windows 7 Update - Argh!!

So, my Win 7 Professional seemed to be having a crisis.   I decided to run a fresh install.  Big mistake.    Not only is the previous issue stil here--Windows Update is stuck in perpetuity searching--but now I am years behind on updates.   

I did manage to get SP1 installed. 

What a friggin' nightmare. 

Suggestions before I break out my shotgun on this thing are appreciated.

Same thing happened to me. I read that sometimes updates wont work unless you manually feed it a few select updates to force it to work, unless that is what Skuzzy is referring to also. All it would do is just sit and search and not find a single one, or attempt to download them and not make any progress

24 hours might be an underestimate. For what I've seen, it can take 48 or even 72 hours.

I had issuses with getting windows updates also, kept getting stuck on looking for updates so I found a couple single updates from the windows support site that solved the issue for me anyways. So if anyone else is having this problem here is the link to the microsoft support page.

SNO, that's a good find. Nothing new, it's been discussed here some months ago, but your source features a nice short tutorial.

The main issue in the update roll-up is that you can't opt out certain updates like the telemetry ones. Or that's at least what I figure.

Can anyone tell if the roll-up contains critical updates only or is it a full package with all the optional crap?

I am not doing that roll-up.  Once it is installed, it makes a mess of things.  As long as it all works, I have disabled the updater in Windows 7.

I have a slip stream installer with the updates in it, so I am set.

It's interesting that you guys get delays. 

I use one of my MSDN licenses at home, legally, and the Windows 7 updates are never delayed. 

So they're probably pushing the consumers to Win 10, while leaving things alone for the people with MSDN licenses (EAs, developers, and such).

I am not doing that roll-up.  Once it is installed, it makes a mess of things.  As long as it all works, I have disabled the updater in Windows 7.

I have a slip stream installer with the updates in it, so I am set.

I assume you mean my installer?  I built an installer for Windows 7 with all the drivers and updates installed.  I run it off a USB drive when I need to install Windows 7.  Slip stream, is the name of the process used to build the installer.

My installer is only good for my hardware, as it only has the drivers for my computer built-in.  I removed all the extra drivers when I built it.  Also removed services I never needed.  Had to get rid of things in order to get all the updates installed.

Vraciu, there's another way, too. When you've got your system up and running in the way you like it, run the Windows CleanManager first to get rid of any clutter and then make a full backup on an external disk or even a USB stick using the Windows 7 backup utility. With that backup it's a simple task to revert to that point by using the Windows installation disk.
