This game for me was\is a dream come true.  Well modeled WWII planes in a community of nuts like me.  I loved the game from the start even though I only got 1 kill for every 5-10 deaths.  I accepted from the get-go it is not an arcade.  I also saw others were getting kills and I saw myself, in time, being able to do what they were doing.

Small changes go a long way (already well documented in this thread).  This game is worth the investment!!!

One preference though are those vets that sill need to fly perk planes 90% of the time (maybe cuz they have to be perceived as having a high score = good???).  I CHALLENGE you vets to fly average planes.  This also gives newbies a better chance.  :old:

In either case GO AH!

EDIT: For newbies I recommend flying using Oswald Boelcke Rules of Air Combat to be  quickly efective. Dont be intimidated to flying a P-47 like a zero and the like.  Its OK for you to fly the way YOU choose to fly.

Some Oswald Boelcke Rules:
1. Make sure you attain a position of advantage when in air combat (speed, altitude, numerical superiority, position), before you attack.
2.  Fly from out of the sun.
3.  When you start an attack, prosecute it to the end.
4.  Fire the machine gun at close range and only when you have your opponent well in your sights.
5.  Go after the opponent from where he cannot see you.
6.  If you are attacked by an opponent diving on you from above, do not try to dodge the attack, but turn into and toward the attacker.
7.  If you find yourself over enemy lines, always keep an eye toward your own direction of retreat.

and.. Have Fun!

Ah see I learned something new today. I didn't follow rule 9 in the last FSO I flew. Makes sense now why I died. Followed my wingie down and we both engaged the same plane when there were two cons and the 2nd one got me because I was way out of position to do anything. I'll chalk that one up to a dur factor  :bhead

Damnit men!! How the hell can I walk away from a community this kick ass?? I love this game as I love all air combat games ( the cool ones anyways).. I'll stay... you all convinced me..
As for joining a squad, I wont commit to anything until I have had the opportunity to fly with and against everyone.. As I started a Rook, i will probably end up a rook.. Just started with the Knights and in January Ill switch to the Bish boys..

Thanks Everyone for the encouragement and tips.. I guess going from being third best in the world in one flight combat game to absolute worst in another is a bit more of a challenge than I thought..

Wardog... Semper Fi brother.. Thank you for the reminder.. Most folks these days don't even know what a STA Marine is since we got disbanded in 96.

FLS, Im sticking with the touch controllers.. love flying with them.. for me its just a whole new level of immersion.. And the P-40 in WOP is definately quicker and has a higher top speed.. Also the A6 Zeek turns better in WOP and I'm guessing you were "BrittGuy" i squared up against the other day..  if it was you, then you know I shot you down 4 to 1... maybe it wasnt you, I know you are much better than that..

Also.. sorry for the Mistake, I thought WOP was VR only.. so then there is no excuse for you killers with perk planes to come fight me in a bone stock plane?? Hehehe..
Maybe as a change of pace or a taste of something different you guys can come to WOP one night a week for some shark tank action.. It is such a small arena that if even just 10 or 20 of you were in there it would be stupid fun..
we could call it Nasty NASCAR Nights!! (I say Nascar because when you start in WOP you get 2 planes..  A P40 and a jap zero..

Anyway.. lets consider this thread closed and go blow some toejam up!!

Just remember a good squad won't take you right away, they would want to fly with them and see if you fit with their style and you agree with their style.  Other than that nothing wrong with asking a squad to fly with them.

You've never shot me down, not that it's particularly difficult,  but you'll get another chance.  :aok

If you want to compare the P-40 and Zeke from WO:P you should probably have the stall limiter on in AH. It's probably good to have it on anyway flying with Touch controllers. Even though it limits your lift it also limits your induced drag so you slow down less as you maneuver. Since turn rate is reduced when you get too slow, you may find yourself turning better with the limiter on, since it prevents you from pulling too much pitch and creating too much drag.

Its too bad I discovered this game just this year. It is not a fun game to play. Not for me or any other new player that comes into the game. It is a sad truth that the community of players that play Aces High now will be the only players to ever play the game now.
A new player simply has no chance to experience good, fun gameplay. Even for a player with 20yrs flight game experience will only find frustration in this game. There is no opportunity to learn considering that, after flying for 15 minutes just to get to a base under fire, the new player will instantly get shot down. If he trys to spawn at a battlepoint he will just get spawn raped.
The level of play within the existing community is such that any new player has a zero chance for success or even a bit of enjoyment. If I am in a fighter bearing down on a bomber, the bomber will shoot me down before i even get a shot off.. If I am in the bomber, I will get shot down before I can even get in the turret to shoot at him! If I get above a guy, be in a faster plane and have better guns, he will climb into me and shoot me down with one pass, one burst and im shot down.. but if i get on his six, i waste all my ammo and still not shoot him down..
if i am attacking the ackack, then he mans the gun and shoots me down.. Put me in a field Gun and he shoots me down...
Not is any single scenario wherein I know I have tactical advantage, better aircraft, better weapons, i still find myself getting shot down by a single pass regardless of what they are in. Spawn, fly for 10 to 15 minutes all alone just to arrive and get shot down within 1 minute of engaging.. and repeat. Continually. By everybody.
I had high hopes for this game. Its just too bad that after 4 months of continous play, I am no closer to being even mildly effective that i was when i played it the first time.
You guys are some real good folks and I appreciate your acceptance of me, but for me, video games are therapy for my ptsd and there is not a single enjoyable thing about Aces High for me or any other new player.
Its just a relative statement of truth. No player can or will diminish his own skill to make it more welcoming to any new player.

Take Care
Saam

Im sorry to hear you feel this way, I think you are a very good guy and a good new stick. Im sorry I was hit by wife ack soon after I had you join my vox, with dodge.  If you decide to give it another try look me up and I will give you any help I can.

:t

I admit though, it is way harder now for a noob than it was in 2000.  There was a much more varied spectrum of players then so you had a much better chance of running into an enemy that wasn't a hyper-predator multi-decade long ace.  Now, that is pretty much all that is left.

Back then, it wasn't often a 15min flight to action, so the  launch-shoot-die cycle seemed shorter and the investment cost of dying didn't seem so high.  A noob may only get 4 min of combat time in an hour of game-play.

Ditch the touch controllers.  That will never be viable in this environment unless you stick to bombers or something.  IMHO, there should be a separate arena available for mouse and touch players.  It's really not fair to throw them into a pit of 20 year vet velociraptors with full HOTAS.  :rofl

$0.02.

I agree!!

Awesome!!! I hate to see guys leave due to the learning curve. I know as all of these other guys know, that it is worth it.

Again, if you dont want to spend time with a trainer, the next best thing is to film your fights and post them here. You dont need to edit them down or convert them to youtube. Just post them here and let these guys tell you what you did right, as well as what you did wrong.

The same goes for anyone looking to get better. Many times you'll reach a point where you seem to stall and not get any better. These guys are great at pointing out tips of where you can get over those humps and start getting better again.

SAAM, when  you get to Bishops, hook up with us Pigs. Fun bunch of guys that like to fly together a break stuff.

one thing you also have to remember that it's not about kills, but helping others capture a base.  I love to play bait and deceit, I have kept players away from town talking about 1v1 on 200, while 2 bombers white flag it and there's an m3 nearby, made half attempts to kill them then I see a couple of others coming trying to bring me down to shut me up. then base is taken.  that for me counts more than if I had killed all of them, because if I had maybe one of them would have actually gone to the town and kill the m3.

anyway, I have fun my way. some others think that kill everything they see is their way of having fun. neither is wrong the way I see it.
