Also discoved the 38 crud ring. New stainless brush came in today to help with that. Took many hours with just a brass bore brush to remove the ring.

Hah!  Previous owner didn't like how .357 functions in a K-frame with factory grips, so he/she reverted to .38 special.  I can understand that!  Get nice rubber grips.  The S&W action is a delight, Old World craftsmanship.  My Model 28 is far and away the best handgun I have, your 19 should be a treasure once you've tamed the recoil.  Have fun working it up.

I'm thinking more on the lines of a shotgun. Would really like an AR15 too though. But would probably be more beneficial to have a shotgun right now.

Im not a huge fan of pistols. I like big and bulkie as mistakes are a lot harder to make. Ive shot 45s 40s 9s and 22s,  tech 9s, shotguns, 30 aught 6, ARs, and AKs. Nothing is more scary than a shot gun at close range.

I do like that one hitech posted tho. Very nice.

I guess I'll just have to see what the shop guy recommends.

get whatever you feel comfortable with.  a few years ago took my wife to get a 9mm, they kept pushing us to a 357, kept telling him that we wanted a 9mm, asked for another salesperson, he said 357 would be better, we left, not sure why they kept pushing the 357.

the only question we had was which 9mm would be better.

also if you don't know how to clean it, then learn till you can do it with your eyes closed while in the classroom with a professional trainer. otherwise don't do like one of my stupid friends. he watched a YouTube video and took apart an ar15, which he had never fired, he asked me to put it back together, i refused, I've fired them but never owned one, never taken one apart.  threw everything in a bag and took him to a gun store and had them do it.  my friend wasn't happy, i didn't give a crap.

anyway, guess my point is have an idea what you want, which you do, but also practice with it, which i think you already know.

congratulating on your first purchase i still have my first gun.

you dont want me to ho, dont point your plane at me.

Demonslayer, I recommend some kind of pump shotgun. You do not have to go big bucks for a decent one either. AN 870 is the top standard but there is nothing wrong with Mossberg either. Get some duck ammo for it I'd suggest #4 and since you are on the left coast it would almost certainly be steel shot. If push comes to shove even birdshot #7 in a modified choke gun is good out to about 20 yards or so but duck shot is better if you can't find 0 or 00 buckshot. If you are new to handguns I wouldn't try to get used to one now. You don't have ammo around to get comfortable with it. If you insist on a hand gun get a revolver, in 38 and or 357. Nothing wrong with S&W (the top of the line IMO) or even Taurus.

HiTech. Take a hint from an old wheel gun Cop. For 38 crud rings take a piece of gun cleaning kit rod  (ALUMINUM!!!) and cut it to about 2" longer than your barrel length. 6" for a 4" bbl. Then get your brass brush (NOT STEEL) and chuck the rod into a hand drill. Put the brush on it and after you let the cylinder soak  (wet patches of solvent run through the cylinder) use the chucked brush to clean out the cylinder chambers. Do not let the brush stay in one place but use a slow back and forth movement with it while it is running. High speed not really necessary if variable speed drill.  Similar to honing a cylinder in an engine. It will take out the crud in short order and save time and elbow grease. I had to have my "antique" worn out S&W that I was issued, in like new condition every day for inspection in the academy after having shot it the day before with really cheap dirty ammo. Doing the cleaning in this way took just about a half hour vs a couple hours like my lesser savvy recruits experienced.

Secondly avoid soft lead bullets, the old style roundnose kind like was common 50 years ago. Use jacketed bullets as they leave less crud behind. Hard cast is better than soft lead but it will still leave crud behind. NEVER shoot 38's then load up the 357 to shoot before cleaning. Shoot the magnums for practice first then switch to 38's.

On your 19 keep in mind that yes it IS a 357 but it was not designed for a steady diet of heavy 357 ammo and WILL shoot loose. It will last forever on a diet of 38's and modern 38 ammo is very very effective now just like modern 9mm is. It will still handle a light diet of 357's but make 80% of what you shoot in the 19 be 38's. A model 19 or 66 (pre safety lock) is starting to be a collectors item.

Just wondering, is there a law in any of the states that says that if you are an uncle and do not have any children you are not allowed to own a firearm?

Probably Maryland, New York and California... and certain counties in Illinois.  ;)
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Aluminum just the most common metal used in cleaning rods. Brass is soft enough to not mess up the rifling if it contacts the cylinder walls / throat. Just avoid steel rods unless plasticoated. I NEVER use a steel bore brush in the bore of a firearm. Don't use the drill on the barrel either. Expect to use up bore brushes as the spinning tends to shred them fairly easily, fortunately they are pretty cheap. Use a non ammonia solvent with brass brushes as ammonia leaches the copper out of the brass. If the solvent is advertised as dissolving copper fouling use another with brass brush.

Consider getting Pachmayr or comparable grips.

Purchased some Pachmayr Grippers and shot them for the first time yesterday.  I had previously tried some panel grips, they also sucked.

It is now fun to shoot the model 19. Now to get the grouping down to dime size at 5 yards.
