Market Garden Produce Stand Honor system
« on: August 09, 2022, 01:21:58 AM »
I own 25 acres and farm about 16 of it. We are lucky enought to be in an area of our county with limited organic, sustainable healthy food options and that leads to me being able to sell anything and everything I grow by 2pm each day. I have a regular NON customer that likes to arrive when she knows I am typically very busy doing my rounds irrigating various different row crops and hugelculture beds. She has stolen well over 2000$ of produce in the period of 2 years. I have confronted her many times, got her on video stealing and reported to the police on numerous occasions. (Liberal police departments don't care about things that don't make them money.) 3 days ago I got arrested for taking her back window out with a pellet rifle and essentially got out with a mean fine and further court date. What would you do?

Leave the very blue state of WA for your neighbor Idaho.

Since (I assume) that’s not an option hire someone who can help out with other things but is also there to provide security and is authorized by your state/local laws to use whatever force necessary to stop robbery/burglary.

Restraining order if you don’t have one already and a no trespassing sign.

Those are things that work quite well in red states where law(s) is still respected.
They're casting their bait over there, see?

You have the "Right to remain silent", anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Get a 22 and a lawyer and aim at her tires next time or just take it in the shorts as a cost of business

Small claims court is a better option than assault but it takes time.

A high power pellet gun is legally considered a deadly weapon, those are charges you don't want.

A large sign with the person's name explaining why they are not welcome on your property might help.

This is what I would do - if local LEO doesn't want to do anything, make them do something.

Restraining order is a good idea.

Put a picture of her and her vehicle up at the stand with a note about her actions. Maybe shaming her will  help. Ask other customers to alert you if they see her at the stand.

People are mostly good people and most people really hate dishonest people and thieves - especially at a place like yours that operates on the honor system. That's  lower than low.

Since you shot her window out, you are now the bad guy for protecting your property she stole, not her being the bad guy for stealing your property.

Not sell for a week, but put a pic of her, her vehicle, and he license plate up and explain why she is the sole reason you are taking a break because she is stealing you blind. Public shaming to the max.

Restraining order and try to press charges for theft. If local PD dont want to do help, go to county, then state. If all PD dont do anything, go to the media and let it be known. Not facebook, but newspaper or tv. If its a slow day and it s a sob story on your half they may write on it

If you have her on video for stealing, take her to court and sue

Friend of mine caught someone stealing from his yard.

Don’t remember anyone else stopping them

It was stopped though

The fact that people expect someone else to sort out this sort of issue is odd

Some drug addled pot heads stole his mothers flowers from her garden once.

The aforementioned pot heads left town shortly after.

Where I live you keep away from the servants of the state.

In the UK you can arrested for being rude on the internet though :rofl

I got banned from youtube for being abusive to the socialist workers party meeting :)

You got arrested for a misdemeanor for breaking her window with a bb gun. If you follow the stupid advice about using a 22 on her tires you likely will become a felon. If you try to make a "citizen's arrest, keep in mind there are laws that could be used against you on counter charges. Video is a strong tool to combat that but also keep in mind how much you could lose in court costs to defend a spurious charge.

Small claims court is your best bet and make sure you have the video to back your claims. File a lien on her car and if she has any real property that as well. You will need the services of a lawyer t advise you how to do that.

I had a neighbor who refused to keep his dogs on his property.  He got one warning after I caught said dogs chasing my livestock.  Next, I caught said dogs killing livestock.  Needless to say, dogs were shot on sight. The sheriffs office was called, and the dog owner was charged with "having dogs running at large".  Next came small claims court and I recouped my loss.
