Could be that coddling controversy/conflict is toxic to the spirit, normalized poison.
Enjoying controversy/conflict is a deflection from issues within. It can destroy friends. The uncle at Thanksgiving dinner.

Enjoying music of fond memories releases endorphins, a comfort zone, like comfort food. It doesn’t make people hate each other. Takes one back to happier times. Music works very time. It makes friends

Does anyone ever lose an argument? When was the last time anyone observed a person's viewpoint changing?

My viewpoint changes almost daily. Not favorably though for those with whom I disagree.

You are not alone. I enjoy a good discusion. Give and take.  Lately it is boring. Some go off the rails. They have no concept of an opposing viewpoint. Hence no discusion.

When opposing viewpoints become polarized, I am not convinced discussion is even possible. I wish it was.

I think we have done a fantastic job of doing the total opposite of accepting diversity of ideas..

Those that spew the need to have tolerance the loudest seem to have none if you aren't in their mindset..

I think the little computer in everyone's hands giving them tech neck and way too much free time on their hands has something to do with it..

The best way for someone to actually change their viewpoint is to live in a place for a bit that pushes the same ideas that you have, or even the opposite just to see what its like.

I think there is a lot of perceptional vs reality issues that any media can take advantage of.

My wife saw this first hand when we lived in Portland for a few years. We saw exactly what it was like, not just a media view. She changed her perspective real quick. Now we live north of Orlando and its almost paradise for us, and most folks have similar ideas as us, so we enjoy it and more importantly, appreciate it. Ive had the opportunity to live in both. I miss a lot of things about Oregon, but living the way they choose to live just to me, isnt the same standard of living as North Orlando.

There are areas where compromise is possible, and sometimes even desirable.

But there are also belief systems, and desires, that are simply incompatible, as they are diametrically opposed.

There is also the truth, factual and objective, and there is everything else. Somewhere someone came up with this bizarre "your truth" concept.

The polarization we see is the result of absolute incompatibility of some beliefs, principles, and ideals.
