wow what a weekend!
« on: April 22, 2002, 01:00:20 PM »
I'm dead tired!  over 20 hours in a boat and only brought home 4 fish :( luckily they were all good white bass, 2 14 inchers and 2 13 inchers.

Saturday was rough, it was windy when we went out and there were 3-4' waves on the main lake.  We hit a cove just at sun up and I tossed out a torpedo top water bait.  First cast of the day, my bait hit the water and a fish hit it about 1.5 seconds later.  It was a small white (fishing for black bass - large mouth)  Threw it back and looked forward to a good day of fishing, how often do you catch a fish on your first cast of the day?  BLAMMO!!!!! no other bites for over 3 hours.  At about 10 am or so we were using spinner baits on a rock ledge in about 5 feet of water.  I'd hit the ledge and let the spinner sink underneath it before I'd crank it in.  I missed a couple of hits, but then landed my first ever small mouth bass.   Then no more hits for the rest of Saturday  It sucked saturday afternoon. The wind had picked up to about 20-25 mph and the water was worse than the ocean. There were 4-5' swells and white caps all over the place.  I almost fell out of the boat twice.

Sunday we got up at 6 am and head to the ramp.  My roommate says "man I'm tired, if it's windy and rainy again lets just go home"  so I agreed.  We get to the boat ramp and there was NO wind what-so-ever.  The lake looked like a sheet of glass, perfect fishing conditions!!!! YES! Finaly!!! We launch the boat and head for where we had heard of some black bass biting last week.  After about 10 min of fishing  I hear this big splash, like somebody droped a big rock in the water.  I look over and my roommates pole is bent in half and he's got an "holy mother of God" look on his face.  We then watched in horor as, what had to be a 4-5 lb black bass wrapped itself around the leg of the dock we were fishing by, then the line broke.  That would turn out to be the only  bite we had all day until 3:30 pm when we started fishing for white bass.

We're tire, we're pissed but damnit we want fish in the boat so we don't give up.  We decide to hunt for stripers or whites on the main body of the lake.  We see about 12 boats in one area and head that way.  As we pull up we see alot of people pulling in whites like crazy.  So we get happy and put minnows on and start fishing.  NOTHING!!!!! NOTHING!!!!! Nothing would bite!!!!   Everybody around us is catching fish, but us!   Boats started moving away signaling that the school of fish had moved on.  At this time I have 2 minnows on at diferent depts and am working a spoon at the bottom.  My roommate is doing the same and his girlfriend has a minnow on.  We decide to follow the boats so I start cranking in my spoon.    I get it about 1/2 way up (35 ft of water) and WHAM!!! something hits it!!  Finaly I have a fish on.  I get it to the top and as I'm bringing it over the boat the hook falls out and the fish falls into the water.  Lost a nice keeper white!

I put my spoon back in just as my roommate and his girlfriend say fish on!  then one of my minnow poles goes down, fish on!!! so I crank the spoon back up and WHAM!!! another fish on!!!!  LOL  4 fish on at the same time w/ 3 people in the boat after 2 days of no fish.   out of those there was only 1 keeper.  Then the unthinkable happens,  my favorite spoon gets snagged on a tree about 30 ft down.  I tried to get it free, but the line broke :(  I was bummed out I caught a lot of fish on that hunk of metal.  I put another spoon on and start doing it again.  Bammo!  Snagged again :(  This time I didn't want to lose another spoon so I worked it up and down slowly to get it free of the branches,  it worked!  I crank it up to check the line and when it breaks the surface I see another lure hanging from the treble hook.  Upon closer inspection I realize that I just caught the same spoon I had lost 5 minutes earlier in 35' of water!!!!!!!!!  I've never seen anything like that happen before.  We laughed for an hour.

Anyway  we finaly got into the whites and caught a bunch of small ones, but did get to bring home 4 good sized fish for 2 nights worth of dinner :)  Was a tough weekend, but the last 2 hours made it worth the while :)  Funny sport this is!  I can't wait for next weekend :)

Animal and Skuzzy :)

We got home last night to find the front drapes down and in shambles.  We had one of those killer evil skeeters in the house and the cat went apeshit trying to kill it.  LOL! BTW their not skeeters they're skeeter hawks they kill skeeters :) but they are big!

I'd have to disagree with that Eagler! Let me tell you about MY bad day fishing.

I have a friend named David that I grew up with and we always went fishing when he made it back into town.

We normally set up some fishing tournaments through the summer so all our friends can get together and we called this the "Snaggle".(snaggle was what David called his line when it got caught on something)

Well I had just sold my boat when David called and said he was going to be in town and he wanted to go fishing. We got everyone together and went to this small lake me David and his little brothe Dan went in David's boat.

We had been fishing for only a little bit when David started to cast and I stepped away from him.(David had a habit of trying to get the lure as close to you as possible) I felt a thud on the back of my head.

I was looking at David when I should have been looking at Dan. Dan was casting at the same time as David and and he didn't see me moving towards him.

Yup sure enough when I reached back to see what had hit me I found Dan's lure.

When David saw what had happened he started laughing his bellybutton off and immediatly grabbed his camcorder.

I tried pulling the hook out but it was stuck in my skull. I even tried pulling it out with pliers but it wouldn't budge.

We finally decided that I should go to the emergency room.

On the way we saw one of the other boats and I asked David not to get to close OR to say anything to them.

Well David makes a beeline right for Kevin's boat and when we pull up Kevin asks how we were doing and David tells him that Dan has over 250lb already. Kevin just looked at us like we were nuts but when I turned my head he saw the hook and understood.

Kevin is a fireman so his first reponse was to ask me if I was OK but when I told him I was fine his second response was to let go a series of laughs that shook the whole lake.

After the hospital I decided to go by David's parents where he was staying to let him know I was OK only to find their whole family watching the video laughing their tulips off.

I had forgotten all about the video until just last year when David decided to get married and he wanted me and Kieren to be in his wedding.

We drove to Cape Gerardo the day before the wedding and met some of David's friends. For some reason everyone I met already acted like they knew me.

I finally found out why when we went to a bar that one of David's friends owned and while I was there everyone there started to tell me of how David brought the video of me into the bar and showed it to everyone.

I almost killed him!

OK OK I guess it was funny but I still wished I had worked that day.

LOL Mighty. I'll be watching the Worlds Funniest Video show for that one, not that I want to give anybody any ideas (Kieren)

By the way, whenever you get hooked past the barb, never try to jerk it out because often there are tiny nerves in the area that become avulsed as you rip the tissue. You can wind up with permenent numbness there.

My fishing trip last weekend was with 2 of my brothers to Punta Gorda, Florida. That is in the shallow bay waters. The trip started out bad when we were trying to caste-net live bait ("green backs" and "red fins") at 5 AM. We chummed them but still only caught a few. Found out later that you need to sneak up on them by poling or with an electric trolling motor. We wound up using lures and rubber baits.

Sometimes we cast into mangroves from the boat, sometime we waded the flats. (My first time doing that) There were a lot of skates and rays to watch out for.

Anyway, we caught 15 Snook - and not a single one a keeper - though we got several 25 inchers.

The Sea Trout and Red Fish save the day- we caught about 6 of each averaging 3-5 pounds. They are delicious!

Great with my special sauce, a mixture of Lime juice, salt, and chilies.

My Dad is. He even retired to Lake of the Ozarks to get as much lake time in as possible.

Well when I was in High School I would accompany him once in a while to the local lake (Big Bear in this case) and I would half heartedly fish while he tried all kinds of new lures and baits, happily tieing lines to spinners and well....you get the idea.

This trip I just put a pole in the water with some kind of bait, and lay down in the little boat cabin for a nap. Next thing I hear is Dad cussing a blue streak and feel a swift kick in the foot.....my pole is bent double. I reel in a 22" rainbow of about 4 lbs. He is freakin livid. He's got nothing to show and I got this really nice fish. So I put the pole back in and nod off again.

GADDAM THE squealing Bstard SOB! comes into my young ears.....followed by another much harder kick. My pole is singing as the line lets out...

This time it is the biggest rainbow I had ever personally seen. I think the record on that lake was about 8 lbs., mine was nowhere near that, but it was over 5 lbs. and at least 2 lbs. bigger than anything my Dad had caught on the same lake. He refused to let me lay down again the rest of the day, and he remained skunked.

We already thought of sending the film in but all you would hear are a bunch of *beeps*.

It definitely wasn't a family film.

And no we don't bow hunt. :p
