The Economy is Soooo bad..........

I'm putting in an 8 hour Saturday just to keep up with orders, and our least expensive product goes for almost $20k.

Looks like somebody's doing ok.

I spent my whole life in the wealthiest nation on earth.  People have whined about the economy the whole time.  Its a little embarrassing.

Midnight,

Which company? The wife andd I are thinking serously for being RV fulltimers in about 2 years. We're looking at what is currently out there and will get real serious in about a year. Got a small 5th wheel now as a camper and RV "trainer". :)

Mav,

I work for Thor California, a division of Thor Industries. Our products include Wanderers, Tahoes, Jazz, Mirage. Thor Industries is Airstream, Dutchman, Keystone, General Coach (in Canada), Komfort, Four Winds, Aerolight and I'm sure some more I can't think of right now.

I would be happy to point you in the right direction even if it isn't one of our products. Full timing means you should really step up beyond the entry level stuff. As a quality proffesional in the biz I have a pretty good idea who is doing it right and who isn't.

My God!  My wife and I aren't the only people out there that are thinking about going full-time in an RV! :)

My wife makes and sells jewelry on the side, her business is taking off somewhat, and we've been thinking that if we could get into enough craft shows to make it self-supporting, we'd almost have to go out on the road full-time because of the distances involved.  Besides, I've been a cube slave for 15 years, maybe this is as good a time as any to get out of the office for a year or two, if we can make it work financially.

So we'll be looking in roughly the same timeframe as you are Mav, getting serious about the end of 2003 and maybe making the move in '04 or even '05.  Should be interesting. :)

Moose,

We already have a F350 dually turbo diesel and are considering a heavier truck, like a Freightliner F60 for a 18K lb 5er. The market is open now on trucks and I was underwhelmed by the performance of the F350 towing a 23' 5th to Texas last June. Gotta have MORE power!!!!:D

Midnight,

Any tips you can give would be appreciated. We ARE serious about this and are doing our research now. Only hangup is waiting for the kid to finish high school and the wife to retire, both 2 years from last month. We arre looking at about 34' lentgh and somewhere between 12 to 14k lb 5er. The Ford can do the 12k but not much more. Floor plan we like is the same as the Lakota 34RLT. You can email me if you'd like. I'll be happy to pass on anything to Moose.

Thanks

Maybe you should call it the "new Osama Economy". That's a heck of a lot more accurate.

The bastige has pretty well killed the airline industry and plenty more besides.

Mav,

My salesmen would shoot me for saying this, but if you have the coin a Teton 5er is about as good as you can get for full timing. They are pricey though, and might exceed your weight requirements.

check them out here

Moose,

We do have something that is right up your alley. A 36' Toy Hauler. This is a comfortable 5th wheel with a 10' garage in the back. We have many customers that use these for craft shows or antique shows. They live in the front and set up the "garage area as a store.  Get a virtual tour at Thor California

Well, the economy has nailed me hard.  I'm sliding ever closer to bankruptcy and don't have any assurance of being able to pay my mortgage past October.:(

I'm looking for work, and have been for a long time, but I've not even been called in for an interview for a job that pays enough.

Drool. :)  Meesa liiiiike.

But...14000+ pounds GVWR?  Um...wtf do you use to pull that thing?  Seems like even a one-ton dually would be overmatched.  I don't think I can afford having to go to tractor-trailer driving school! :)

We'd actually been looking at class A motorhomes, 32-35 feet.  We'd have to put her show booth display in underfloor storage, or keep it in a tow vehicle (get a small pickup/wagon/hatchback as a shuttlecraft--fortunately, selling jewelry means she doesn't need a huge display).  But in any case, we're still in the seriously exploratory stage.

Thanks for the link, that's some nice stuff you guys make and sell!
