That N1K2 carries 800 rounds of 20mm!!! If you think that's a short clip, try the Hurricane IIC with something like 82 rounds per gun!!! Try the Yaks, try the A6M2. Only then will your appreciate the huge ammo loadout in fighters like the N1K2 and CHog, or even the C.205 or Dora.
Tell ya what, fly the SBD with two little MGs and a modest amount of ammo. It will teach you how to kill with minimal ammo expenditure like nothing else can (including the Yaks, which have the advantage of having one cannon). That is if you live long enough!

As to the original question: I learned to shoot in short bursts in the military. Consequently, I do so here except where a huge volume of rounds is required, such as when strafing dangerous targets such as PTs or GVs. In this case, bursts up to 2 seconds in duration are used.
