Engine Exhaust effect
« on: October 09, 2002, 04:49:33 PM »
I think it would be awfully cool to see the engine exhaust from a/c especially if there could be a difference between when the engine was running on WEP and when not.  Exhaust stack flames would be cool too :D

I also would like to put in another plug for being able to burn up the rifling in the gun barrels if to long of a burst is fired.  I wanna see lead spiraling all over the sky

Just as a question to all you virtual sticks regarding gun time...

How many out there actually fire in controlled bursts, or just pull the trigger and hold it until hits are achieved?

Define short... (if that is possible)...

I find that I shoot bursts of about 1 to 1 1/2 seconds, with minor pauses between bursts.  I'm curious to see if I'm a little to quick to release the trigger....

I try to fire in very short controlled bursts (on the order of .5 ~.75 s).  I guess this is because I fly LA-7 and NIKI a lot, so I don't exactly have an over abundance of ammo to blow.

You're joking, right?

The La-7 has about average ammounts of ammo and the N1K2 is practically made of ammo its got so much.

I fire in short bursts of a quarter second unless I'm shooting at a big target or have a very good shot on a fighter.  If that is the case I'll fire maybe a second and a half of ammo.  If I'm getting hits on a bomber I'll keep firing until it is fatally damaged.

Modas, it depends a lot on the gun type, number of guns, convergence selected, range of the target, etc.

In my case, most of the time firing two or four MG151/20 guns for one or two seconds at very short range. I like the big BOOMs more than the smoke ;)

ALmost made me fall of my chair.

I fire controlled, short burst, I make alot of delfection shooting, can't afford to just waste the ammo in the air although all 190's carry alot of 20mm.

My gunnery sucks, and I usually fly the 109, too.

"Short burst" is something like 20 rounds of MG and 2 rounds of 30mm at single trigger.

If you think La-7 and Niki have little ammo, you ought to check out the Yak-9U. :p Or for that matter, the -9T.

Short bursts are all I use and nearly always at less than d150. You've got to make sure every round counts in the Yak.

cool, thanks for the replies guys.  Sounds like I'm not under shooting my bursts at all.  :)

As far as the ammo load on the niki and La7, I wasn't going to touch that one.  Too easy.  :p I need more of a challenge hehehehehhe

Lol-

That N1K2 carries 800 rounds of 20mm!!! If you think that's a short clip, try the Hurricane IIC with something like 82 rounds per gun!!! Try the Yaks, try the A6M2. Only then will your appreciate the huge ammo loadout in fighters like the N1K2 and CHog, or even the C.205 or Dora.

Tell ya what, fly the SBD with two little MGs and a modest amount of ammo. It will teach you how to kill with minimal ammo expenditure like nothing else can (including the Yaks, which have the advantage of having one cannon). That is if you live long enough! ;)

As to the original question: I learned to shoot in short bursts in the military. Consequently, I do so here except where a huge volume of rounds is required, such as when strafing dangerous targets such as PTs or GVs. In this case, bursts up to 2 seconds in duration are used.

I have watched Nikis fire 10 second bursts at me from 800 yards...
I think they have 20 or more seconds of fire..40 seconds if they use one bank at a time.

The la7 has 12-15 seconds fire without any way to extend it. but of course it hits hard

FYI

none of these planes have enough ammo to "shoot out the rifeling"

that and the fact thet you have air moveing at 250 to 500mph past the guns cooling them, sorta fixs the problem..

I have my stick programmed for 1 sec bursts. I'm considering a 1/2-3/4 sec burst on a diff button as well.
