King of the Hill
« on: October 15, 2002, 03:38:59 PM »
Frankly, I'm kinda dissapointed in the interest in the KOTH event. For those of you unfamiliar with the event and it's history, KOTH was started in air warrior years ago and apparently enjoyed a rich tradition with a big following. It was suggested by (I think) Seeker about a year or year and a half ago that we get this event or something similar in Aces High. The Scenario team drew up a similar event we called "Wild Wednesday". This was a similar event, with some differences in rules. But the end result was a "last man standing" sorta theme.

This WW event did not go over well with some of the AW faithful. Some felt it was a cheap copy of the original King of the Hill from Air Warrior. Well, In recent months there have been former players of Air Warrior recruited into the Scenario Corps. One of which took on the KOTH event as his own project with the apparent goal of bringing it to it's former glory in Air Warrior. As a result of this and other changes that needed to be made, the WW event was dropped and it was decided to have the KOTH event as the only "last man standing" type event in the game. This was all well and fine with me and others as it was basically the same format as WW. Well, we're about 4 months into King Of The Hill in Aces High and attendance has dwindled down to where WW was or maybe even fewer than that.

What I want to know is where did all the support for KOTH go? Since Air Warrior was discontinued a year or so ago, I'd think that at least 50% of the then current AW population came over here. Why is KOTH not as popular here as it once was in Air Warrior?

I personally enjoy this event and would hate to see it chopped because of lack of participation, which is probably where it's headed. (that's my guess, I don't know that) I do know that there is little to no promotion/ participation in the event by the group who so desperately wanted it in Aces High. I assume KOTH was this past friday evening? I was AFK and couldn't participate. I came home wanting to read about it and there was not surprisingly no AAR telling what happened or who won. Found out from reading my squad board how the event ran. Apparently it didn't matter enough to bother with an AAR by the CM in charge of the event.

Does anybody care about KOTH?

This is not a rant by a mad ex-CM but a post by a concerned player who'd like to see this thing promoted.

[edit]ops, meant for this to be in the "special events general" forum[/edit]

Bring back Wild Wednesdays

I enjoyed the Wild Wednesdays and thought that AH had done a good job of taking the original KOTH concept and adapting it. I know for me personally, scheduling a set amount of time to fly is easier to do on a wednesday than on a friday.

I also liked the fact that it was weekly and I think the CM team running it, Hblair and the person before him (Sling?) that I cannot recall right now, were very good at posting AAR's and promoting a sense of competition and rivalry that was effective in drawing in the hot sticks to come compete.

That was the real attraction...knowing that the reward for setting aside those 90mins out of your week gave you a ticket to go up against some of the best competition in AH.

oedipus, prizes sound good, but have you flown in KOTH or WW here? I've never seen anything near a "chest thumping contest".

Thanks hornet. I think interesting AAR's are an important part of promoting/keeping interest in events.

As far as I'm concerned, the WW was the ultimate furball. You got in excess of 40 guys surrounding you, and not one of 'em is your friend.

I thought the WW was put together well and a fun event, I had to stop flying it because of real life.. but wednesdays are better for me (and they were at a good time), fridays- no can do at all.

Never flew the KOTH, so can't comment on it.

I think mostly because it's only once a month and nobody knows when it is.  I only made it last week because somebody happened to mention it on the squad channel.

KOTH was originally started back in AW as more of a "squad duel". Many (not all) of the original participants came from my old squad the 327th Steel Talons. The original format was pretty simple, first to win 3 fights was KOTH. Reigning champ picked the 1st plane (all used same fuel settings and plane) and the winner picked from then on. KOOL, STICK, SPAZ, YES as well as 4-5 others from a second squad (sorry your names eude me guys) really drove it. Usual attendance was 12-20. Originally it was an all "A-land" event but others quickly jumped over. It was held at a rear A-land base every Friday. Was always a great time and the only prize was bragging rights. glad to see its here...will be one of my first things to support when I "re-up" again.

I liked Wild Wednesday a lot.  I personally thought it was a stupid idea to change it, so I never really followed where it was going when it changed into KOTH.

I don't think prizes would make a difference...I offered a free WW2 DVD(which Tac won) way back in WW,but the turnout was the same...It was more fun though..:)

I'd be willing to donate a flaming duck to the next competition..

Duck fires tend to bring in the people.
