Koolhoven FK.58 is the correct answer.
~dozen of these flew w/ the armee de l'air in the spring of 1940.
was going to try to say "what plane is this" in french, but could not

Bill,  try   http://www.dictionary.com/

click on the Translator.  Only problem is I dont speak French so I have no idea if this is right or not.

Seulement le problème est moi ne parlent pas français, ainsi je n'ai aucune idée si c'est correcte.

What plane is this?
Quel avion est ceci?

I would say : quel est cet avion ? for "what plane is this"

and : le seul problème  est-que je ne parle pas français et donc je n'ai pas la moindre idée si c'est juste ou non for "Only problem is I dont speak French so I have no idea if this is right or not."

:)

Thanks Straffo , It appears that the translator is close.
 It just doesn't account for the differences in sentence structure between languages.

Il s'avère que le traducteur est étroit.
Il juste ne explique pas les différences en structure de la phrase entre les langages.

And when I translate your answer I get :
the only problem be-that I do not speak French and thus I do not have the least idea if it is just or not

This is scary, I might actually learn another language.
C'est effrayant, je pourrait réellement apprendre un autre langage.

Quatre ans en l'Allemagne et moi ont seulement appris quelques mots ainsi moi ont pu commander la bière et trouver la station de train.

@whgates3
well ... if you speak of the TV serie it was translated like that : "les têtes brulées" (as you said :  "the flaming heads" ) as black sheep mean nothing for us french except well ... as sheep with black wool :P
but "têtes brulées" is an equivalent to maverick not black sheep so go figure :)

have a look to http://www.notam02.no/~hcholm/altlang/ht/French.html

@MajTom

this sentence "Il s'avère que le traducteur est étroit."

is quite funny :P and would perfectly be said by a gay :D

if you look at my signature it's a simple sentence (the french one not my lousy translation) but this simple sentence would kill right now any foreign french teacher and puke online translator.

beer and train ? well I bet you can say sauerkreutz too ;) or kartfoln (my german is rusty sorry) if you were more in touch with  foreigner it's quite easy to learn their languages
If I look a the messages I posted in this BBS 2/3 years ago I would be ashamed
