Lutz has announced that the new GTO (nee Holden Monaro) will have a 360+ hp LS1 V8 when it comes to market in late '03. The car will also apparently be available with the 405 hp LS1 V8.

Nuch
Why would you think it is going to hurt old GTOs resale value?

Most people feel like you that it aint real so GTO purists are going to stay with the older ones.

Thats like saying new firebirds killed the value on the old ones, lol and that just ain't true... just look at the damn prices.

I kinda like it actualy. It is as close as they have come in the past few years, good V8, six speed tranny and RWD.

What they need to do is offer a low cost one, without all the standard leather and power crap.

Trust me, per your income and cost of living, price of auto's.... in 1968, the GTO was most likely out of your income range then too.

400+ ponies...that gets my donut in a knot :D

A new GTO with leather is within my income just fine lol.

But to be more pure to the GTO idea a stripper fast car would be closer.

Oh! I see, I misunderstood what you were saying.  I was trying to say that per income vs cost of car was roughly the same.

Yes, stripper is needed!

I've been waiting to get my hands on an Austalian Supercar for awhile, and it looks like GM is beating Ford to the punch.  I hope I can get one without the "soft-assed American" treatment.  No leather, no power seats, no soft-ride suspension, please.

Still, bringing the Monaro to the US to replace the Firebird is like swapping a P-38 for an A-20.  Close, but different performance parameters and different classes of cars entirely.  If Pontiac wanted a premier flagship vehicle, it should've read the Nissan marketing guide first.  Pontiac may claim "driving excitement", but Nissan is the company building the driver's cars for the masses.

I'm just waiting to see if Chrysler's "Charger" 4-door concept vehicle will be scheduled for production.  Now that's a sweet-looking performance sedan.

My $2.00E-02:  Live Axle = No Sale.
Based on stats I've seen, even an LS-1 powered version won't beat a $25,000 rice rocket in 1/4 mile.

Gofaster.... Were not getting the Charger... but a 300N with the Hemi motor for late 03'.. D-C is looking to move RWD cars again after a decade.... I am looking forward to the Razor which looks closer to production.

And yes all the Aussi's have the fun cars it seems and look at Euro as well..  They give the Miata's Turbo's in Aussi give them street burning power with a 0-60 time in low 6's...  I have to buy mine and then it voids the warranty.. ARGH

I think they are wasting a terrible opportunity with this car... it could have been an event - instead they're releasing what looks like a Ford Taurus with a VERY big engine.

YMMV  ;)

Firstly, the only way to hurt the value of the 60's era muscle cars is to make a better one.  I'm pretty sure the vintage GTO resale value will be unaffected... even go up if anything.

As for the new GTO... it doesn't look half bad from the photos.  I'm curious as to where the 95% plastic comment came from.  Were you reading the Corvette page by mistake?

If its 350hp, lite and rear-wheel-drive then it would take a great blunder elsewhere in the design for it to be a let-down.
