I used to work at it fairly seriously (before the CT came about). I certainly wouldn't do everything for score, but most of the time it was at least in the back of my mind. In spite of what many may say about playing for score, it CAN be fun.. for some people. It's funny that since so many figure that playing for score is not for them, it can't possibly be any fun for anyone else.
I'm clearly no where near the best in here, so that made it a real challenge. When players like Fariz, Ypsilon, AKLarry/AKNimitz, Mitsu, winqck, Citabria/Fester, GTR, Booky, Bradys5, Khan, CUCKOO, dzd, AGJV44 (& the list goes on) make/made an even half-hearted effort, it CAN (or could) be quite a challenge to rank amongst them. Playing for score also CAN make you a better pilot.
After awile, I realized that you can rank very high by just doing a few things. Fly ANY way that you want, but make sure that you have no 0's in your score page, and you will do well. This mode only takes about 5% of your tour time. (Make sure that you have at least 1 capture, PT rocket or torp hit, etc.) When the map is slow, and there's just not much to do, I look for these kinds of opportunities, I like doing a bit of everything anyway.
The next "level" of devotion is to make an effort to improve only the areas that you suck (by rank) at. Sometimes again, I still do this.
Overall, I'd say I still spend 5 to 10 percent of my online time intentionally making an effort to improve my score (combined in the CT and MA). Other than that, I have no worries about de-acking a base, or straffing GVs, even in fighter mode. If I think that I stand a chance of getting a kill or two, I'll usually attack a greater number of enemy, if I'm in a twisty plane, I'll enter a fight low. I do what's fun, every now and then that includes a score mission.
Besides, I love statistics and charts!
