How Many Play for Scores?
« on: December 08, 2002, 04:47:23 PM »
How many people play Aces High for scores, and how many could care less about scores, just playing for the fun of each engagement?

Just curious.  Obviously most games are set up under the assumption that most or many players keep score.  Do you keep score?  Would you play Aces High if there was no score keeping at all?

Assuming about 4,000 customers playing Aces High, and only the top hundred making most lists, do you think the other 3,900 are trying for scores or just having fun no matter what their scores?

i don't play for rank/score per se, but i'll game the stats to get a high ranking to rub my almost never land ethos in the true rank-weenies hugackrunaltmonkeygangertimid freak faces.  i'm sure it burns 'em to see me ranked up there in the top 100 or so.  at least i hope it does.  :D

0 Point in playing for rank or score in the MA. If you don't enjoy one of the catogories of aircraft/vehicles and don't spend any time in them you're penalized for it under the current scoring scheme. IMHO there are only two catagories of scoring that have any meaning - hit percentage and kills/damage per sortie. And the only value in those two catagories is in the ability it gives you to measure your own progress.

I do both.

I like to set myself a goal at the beginning of a tour. Might be to get the highest possible k/d in a particular aircraft. Might be to learn a new type. Might be to try and get the highest possible rank. Keeps me occupied and interested.

Getting the #1 rank was the least pleasurable month of AH I have had. Boring Boring Boring. Never again.

Flying for the top 15 this month I haven't changed the way I fly too much. Just flying lots of late war cannon rides to stay out of trouble and get lots of kills. I have had to game the Buff scores. Next month I'll fly them properly I promise.

Next month back to the C.205 I think. Maybe the FW190A5/8

The answer is obvious, no one flys for score as you can see.

I used to work at it fairly seriously (before the CT came about).  I certainly wouldn't do everything for score, but most of the time it was at least in the back of my mind.  In spite of what many may say about playing for score, it CAN be fun.. for some people.  It's funny that since so many figure that playing for score is not for them, it can't possibly be any fun for anyone else.

I'm clearly no where near the best in here, so that made it a real challenge.  When players like Fariz, Ypsilon, AKLarry/AKNimitz, Mitsu, winqck, Citabria/Fester, GTR, Booky, Bradys5, Khan, CUCKOO, dzd, AGJV44  (& the list goes on) make/made an even half-hearted effort, it CAN (or could) be quite a challenge to rank amongst them.  Playing for score also CAN make you a better pilot.

After awile, I realized that you can rank very high by just doing a few things.  Fly ANY way that you want, but make sure that you have no 0's in your score page, and you will do well.  This mode only takes about 5% of your tour time.  (Make sure that you have at least 1 capture, PT rocket or torp hit, etc.)  When the map is slow, and there's just not much to do, I look for these kinds of opportunities, I like doing a bit of everything anyway.

The next "level" of devotion is to make an effort to improve only the areas that you suck (by rank) at.  Sometimes again, I still do this.

Overall, I'd say I still spend 5 to 10 percent of my online time intentionally making an effort to improve my score (combined in the CT and MA).  Other than that, I have no worries about de-acking a base, or straffing GVs, even in fighter mode.  If I think that I stand a chance of getting a kill or two, I'll usually attack a greater number of enemy, if I'm in a twisty plane, I'll enter a fight low.  I do what's fun, every now and then that includes a score mission.

Besides, I love statistics and charts!

To answer the rest of your question, I think that most players do at least partially play for score.  But, most will never admit it because its so uncool to play for score.

Would I play AH if there was no score?  Certainly, but I may be the exception.  I'm a junkie, been here since Beta 1, Day 1, and have seriously enjoyed over 99% of my time online.

I do think that the game would fizzle without score and rank however.  Ever played a sport where no one keeps score?  Well it typically sucks, is less than intense and ends early.

The more reasons you have for players to play, the more and the better people will play.

I play for fighter score, usually.  I hadn't tried to get my 'overall' score up at all, at least not since I tried really hard one month and finished 10th.

Right now I'm trying for the top 15, so I am playing for 'overall' score.  Or rather, I'm doing bombing and GV stuff that I haven't done in months.  It CAN be fun- but I'm getting irritated a whole lot faster than usual, because it 'counts'.

I'm at the point now where I've gotten into the top 15, so I'm just 'coasting' for the rest of this month.  I'll be checking my score every couple days to see if I'm slipping in the ranks, then I'll get on and do what I have to do to get it back up.

Honestly, the only rank that I think matters is the fighter rank, but that is just because that is what I like, so I look up to people that do it well.  It is also the only rank thats just about impossible to 'game'.. you are either good or you aren't.  You can't 'pretend' like you can in the other categories.  Case in point, I think I'm ranked like 5th or something absurdly low in GVs.  Thats because I had 2 good sorties in a Flakpansie- I'm nobody to fear in a tank.

Whereas typically, if someone has a decent fighter rank they'll now how to fight.  There are exceptions, but there aren't to many of them, really.

I use to play for overall score but grew tired of that after the 1.10 version changes.

I then use to play for just Fighter score and K/D and still do to an extent though tend to now be more aggresive and play for good engagements and helping out where I can as much as possible..

I really don't get to spend enough time online now to warrent any attempt at achieving a high score though do focus more on fighter then anything.

Hmmmm.....depends on what sort of mood i'm in.  Sometimes i'll try my hardest to get as many kills as i can without dying, othertimes i'll grab a plane and go GV hunting or hit the fuel at a base in a tiffie or somehting along the lines of ground attack.

Today I tried to see how well i could do in a Seafire and was trying to get lots of kills to get a good K/D in the fighter category.  However a few days ago i was flying the Hurri I and furballed right next to my base to see how well i could do.

Spending only 3hrs and 25 mins in fighters i've mangaged to get my fighter  rank to 16 :) and that's with 2/5 of my fighter kills being in a Hurri I.  Ooooo...i'm starting to sound like Widewing.:D
