I remember BigPac. Used to love that map.
Not really sure if I could go back. Gotten kinda
used to AH. I don't really even fire up theWB anymore.
But it does bring back some fun flyin.

Only thing i hated about bigpac..um..well, TWO things:

Main island hop-skip-jump from B's mainland..gave them distinct advantage

that fluff'n B's base on se corner that had certain things that simply wouldnt die!..it wasnt one of the 'safe' fields...was just a bug..that the AW WEASELS NEVERfluff'n FIXED! ahh..got that off chest now

oh yah..1 more thing..the CV a bit nw of main isle..the command to show range to target gave incorrect data..messed up capture, as well as bombin

and I personally think the assymetrical aspect of the Big island and its closeness to the Bz mainland added something to the arena.

and then there was that fightertown atoll. Kept all the furballers happy and they could duck out if they felt like it to help a field. Not a bad idea that!

It helps the immersion a lot. But they have to be representative of real WW2 fields. I remember the BIG new map foisted on us at the end of AW. I think the Kraits had a hand in it. It was waaay to symmetrical, had a flak ridden mountain range that was unuseable in the centre and had fields named after pilots. Now despite one of those being my name I always felt it sucked. The real names were/are much better.

Basically what it boils down to is the distance between the bases. With the map size (even reduce in size) the fields were to far apart. Fighting would end up to spread out although in my option would work for me. It was also brought to my attention that the two larger main lands in the east and south would be the ones doing the most fighting and the south being the reset corner. While the large land mass in the northwest would be easier to defend mainly because of the distance between the east and southern land masses. In short the BigPac map would not represent a level playing field. I thought of redoing it but Nuttz had come up with a much better map along the same lines as the BigPac arena. A quote from Gatso explains much better what I am trying to say, this after reducing the map and turning the major land masses into islands. Hope you don't mind the quote Gatso.

"Cage, love your concept. One comment from me though. You know how most of the smaller MA maps have a 'winner corner' and a 'reset corner'?

From your last image It looks like NW has the advantage with a more compact home island, making defense of the whole land mass easier while the other 2 home islands are slightly longer and thinner. Makes defense more spread out.

Also look at the distances between all of the main land masses. The NW has quiet a lot of water between it and the other two islands. The NE and S island have only around 4-5 sectors at their closest point.

It's really hard to fit 3 sides equally onto a map which is square. I just feel the balance is slightly too much in favor of NW at the moment. Sort of like the West side on Mindinoa or the North side on NDisles which very very rarely get reset. Gut feeling is that S would end up as 'reset corner' and NW as 'winner corner'.

big pac?? rofl!

i remember in FR the bz usually held hawaii; the cz were usually too few to do much; the az were usually getting killed trying to hold near the main island. but seeing the old field names

warmed the 'ol heart.

I also remember hating flying over all that water to get to a fight. I also hate flying over alot of pizza to get to a fight.

But hey, if terrain like that were in the rotation i think it would be great.

of the first pic? yeah that's Fighter Town, aka the Atoll...

it was dead center in the overall map.

i spent most of my time out west neat rabual and some other cool bases. never really did care much for the big island, aka Hawaii.. too framerate intensive for my machine at the time, Rabual was pretty bad, too, tho'

i cut my FR teeth in FT, tho'.. that's where i learned to not be such an easy target low and slow.

Errr.... not sure where you got that idea from! The Kraits had nothing at all to do with that map - apart from having a field named after us and a couple of other fields being named after prominent members (Spiff and Fidd). Our only claim to fame was the Scenario Aircraft Converter (SAC) which enabled customisation of aircraft and terrains, and later the alternative sound package - KAWSM (Kraits Air Warrior Sound Manager). Of course, players could use SAC terrains to change the look of that big map, but that was our only involvement.

Funny.... people used to say exactly the same things about that map as they now do about the AKDesert - "its too big", "takes too long to find a fight".... deja-vu

(though I liked it and I like the AKDesert
