Wheels turn (M8, M3, M16MGC), but not tracks.
« on: January 03, 2003, 02:34:37 AM »
I just noticed that the wheels on the M8, M3 and M16MGC are articulated.  I had previously assumed that they were static like the treads on the tanks, LVTs and halftracks.

The rotating wheels add a lot to the look of motion in the vehicles with wheels.  I'm wondering what would be involved in getting tracked vehicles to be articulated as well.

The M8 in particular looks really nice.

An animated texture would do.

how are you seeing this?  i just took a film of an m8, and the wheels were static....

Shane,

Launch AH in offline mode, grab and M8 and use F3 to go to the external mode while you drive around.  Use the views to alter your viewpont, or go into F8 mode after going into F3 mode.  Look at the wheels from a stop as the M8 accelerates, their rotation speed varies correctly.

Front wheels pivot when turning a corner as well.

GScholz,

That would work for the treads, but not the wheels.  The wheels need to rotate as well.  And it all has to vary with speed, like the M8 does now.

Tracks are always difficult to animate right, especially if the running-wheels should follow the terrain, and the suspension should flex with acceleration and braking.

I think its a frame-rate wheel-speed syncronization thing.  Much like old western movies where wagon wheels apear to stop or spin backwards because they are nearly in sync with the film speed.

It is and you can adjust it.

I have to figure it out everytime myself because I only play with it once every few months.  Look in arena settings... scan the list and double click on "it".

Same effect with the paddlewheel boat in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".  The wheel appears to rotate slowly in the opposite direction of spin.

Try offline, SETUP > Arena Settings > ViewModeFlags

Lets you enable external view on all planes, vehicles and boats.
Also the 'Tower God Eye' is available there.

I'd just be happy if ya could turn a tracked vehicle around in less than a city block;

too bad tracked vehicles don't have a better control system...
I.E. like simulating the real controls tracked vehicles have..

like allowing the use of two joysticks (for realism and tight turning)

Does anyone know how to work the feature that lets you zoom all over the map, like God?  No AC or GV, you can just zoom around at any speed.  I recall hearing about it, but have never seen it.
