Lately, I’ve been spending more time in the CT than in the MA, largely due to the mob-like mass gang battles in the MA, which I really don’t like participating in (on either side of them).
Overall, the quality of the pilots in the CT may be higher than in the MA, mostly because there are far fewer noobs (lower percentage of the population). Other factors such as short-range icons and no dot dar beyond immediate field radar elevates SA skill requirements to higher levels than are required in the MA. Add to that a limited plane-set, and it can be tougher to survive and thrive. Those noobs who do show up often get discouraged because life in the CT is usually short and violent for beginners. Those who tough it out generally improve quickly and soon become someone to be reckoned with. One example of this is Bluesy. Before long, he will a formidable pilot.
Indeed, there are some really good sticks that fly as regulars, such as Fester, Shane, Wilbuz, Eskimo, Ammo, Ghosth, Daddog and many others who grace us with their skills. On one occasion, I had the good fortune to wing up with Fester, Shane and Eskimo for a few fighter missions. I had a great time. The opposition was not nearly as pleased.
I have great respect for the above named, as well as for most of those who fly the CT. I don’t fear them, but I am fully cognizant that I cannot afford to make a mistake when fighting them. Moreover, I have benefited from flying with them, paying very close attention.
I have had some terrific battles with Shane. One stands out because it lasted for what seemed like forever. Shane was in a 109G-10, I had a Spit XIV. Neither of us knew that the other was virtually out of ammunition. This fight was interesting because most of it was fought in the vertical. No one was able to gain any significant advantage on the other. Finally, my fuel became critical and I disengaged and Shane, in essentially the same condition, didn’t follow. When we talked about the fight we both laughed when we realized that neither of us any more than a few MG rounds remaining, and no cannon ammo. Shane landed his four kills, I landed my three. Fights like these are commonplace in the CT, and Shane avoids no one or concerns himself with being at a disadvantage. In fact, he thrives on being at the initial disadvantage. Personally, I think he’s nuts!
I wish that more of the good sticks would drop by the CT for a few sorties. Sometimes, during MA resets, a crowd will arrive, but only fly a sortie or two before heading back to the MA. Hey guys, stick around a while!
My regards,
Widewing
