« on: February 13, 2003, 06:00:15 PM »
Does any1 use the ECS K7S5A v3.1 motherboard and if so, any issues with bad connections, modems not connecting, and lockups at reboot? Also, can you OverClock at 166/166?

K7S5A mobo 520 SFB
AMD XP Athon 1800+
256 DRAM
Gainward GeForce Ti-4200 GS.

Any imputy is greatly appreciated! This is taking way too much out of my time without finding the problem.

I have a ECS K7AM?? - something.
I got my machine second hand, already built.
I had all kinds of issues that were all resolved when I came to the conclusion that the jumpers for DDR RAM were not connected.

The only advice that I can give you is to read the manual that came with the MB and make sure that all of the jumpers are where they should be for your system.

Good luck.

<> Eskimo2,

I use the K7s5A MB also.  I did have some issues at first, but you can go to their website http://www.ecsusa.com and download ALL of the updates for the MB. (including BIOS updates)

this should resolve any issues you are having.

Let me know how this works!!!

Hi, sorry I didn't check the replies but I didn't get a mail notification.

Yes I tried all the updates and I've been playing with this POS for a LONG time and nothing happens. Very very strange, i fix one thing and another 1 brakes.

For the jumpers, I made sure they were all in the right place BUT  i don't see one for the DDR ram?! Not on the bord or on the manual. Any idea where it is?

Could you give me exactly the errors you are having?  Provide as much detail as possible about the steps you are taking, as well as the results along the way.  Pretend I am tech support, give me the scoop.

We'll getcha going before too long!!

K7s5a V3.1
AMD athlonXP 1800
256 pc133 (pc2100)  Kingston ram
SB live 5.1
Nvidia G4 ti4200
2 HDs West. Digital, 40 and 80 gigs
2 CDRoms
Floppy
Turbolink PSU 350 W
XP Pro + Sp1

All worked well for months then all of a sudden I started getting horrible ping spikes in AH to the point where It would go ( dialed in ) from 180 to 4000+ and back. After a while I couldn't dial aol faster than 28800 anymore. So after being tired of blaming HTC i decided to reinstall XP fresh to no avail, update all drivers and bios whith less results, took all the unessential parts out and started putting one at a time back. As soon as I installed a PCI modem OR G4 Nvidia ( removing an older, safer vid card ) the problem started again. This would ALSO accour if i went to the bios and changed the ram/pcu speed to 133/133 form 100/100. When I try to dial I ear lots of noises out of the modem speaker. I took every hardware possible out of this PC and Installed into another pc and they all work well. My modem and line are fine since I can use them well on the older PC.

So what's left is the PSU and MOBO. Tomorrow I'll try to take the PC to some tech store to try another PSU and MoBo.

Since it seems to make a difference when I plug in a new VGA or PCI card, I'm assuming that the psu went bad and there isn't enough juice to run the system OR that this famousely cheap/ crappy board finally ran its course.

Thnx. For your time.

Ok,

Here is what I found.  My power supply was not pushing enough when I first got my K7S5A MOBO.  I had to get one with higher Amps NOT higher wattage.  Make sure you are pushing at least 14AMP.  Preferred is 16 or more.  THat solved all of my lock up issues.

GOod Luck, and sorry I didn't remember this before.  Your post reminded me of it though!

Yes I reinstalled AOL :(

Can you give me detailed info in why AOL is bad running on a PC?

I might have to switch to a less customer oriented ISP.

Thnx.

Pazzotuffo,
You may be on the right track with the PSU but you are also having modem/connection issues.  Fortunately, I don't have any personal experience with AOL but this BBS and many other forums I have been to are full of AOL related problems.  For example, read the replies in this thread from Skuzzy, Bloom and others more knowledgeable than I.

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76698

AOL wasn't actually the problem in this instance, but it was one of the first suspects.  Hope the PSU solves your problem.

Sigh....it looks like you stopped reading at the first reply on the topic u pasted above. Reading further you can see that ignorance was the major factor and that AOL had nothing to do with it.

Oh well, another case of...

I guess you stopped reading when you got to the link.:D

I was just referring to the fact that AOL has caused many other problems referenced in the replies.  I really don't care if you are in love with AOL or not.  I don't think I will switch to AOL from my
1955/357 cable connection.  Did the PSU fix your problem?

Glad to hear you got things working well. I've built 8 systems with the K7S5A and they are all purring well. A good, cheap, stable motherboard with the SiS 735 chipset.
