Plainly...

I think that the citizens of the U.S. are safer with a U.N. mandate than they are without one.

Good point Sandman, Islamic extremist fanatics always bow in deference to the mighty UN....

But seriously do you really believe that? If so how come the UN did not prevent the 911 attacks? Or are you saying real patriotic americans will be the targets of terror my french or german or even traitorous american radical degenerate communist scum?

I'm saying that there are terrorist organizations all over this planet. If there really is a way to "win" the war on terror, I'm certain that it will require support from other countries.

Consider Afghanistan... I can't recall a single country that did not support our right to go there, remove the Taliban government, and hunt the Al-Qaeda. Righteousness was on our side.

We don't have that same sense of righteousness... and I wish we had it.

By turning our backs on the U.N., can we expect non-coerced support from other countries? IMHO, the terrorist organizations will benefit from the lack of support from the members of the U.N. and it is our fault, not theirs, for failing to convince them.

I disagree. The "important" nations are already firmly in the US camp. US gets 80% of its mid east intel from the Israelis, cant get a firmer ally than them. Rest mostly comes from Egypt and Pakistan...another couple of firm allies.

As for the "less cooperation in the future"-category, that group of nations is filled with nations already doing their best to throw sticks in the wheels for the US (France) or they are completely irrelevant (Germany).
