Apart from mounting the same engine, is there any other reason why the Fiat G.55, Macchi MC.205V and Caproni-Reggiane Re.2005 do look so similar?

Drago,

Thats a beautiful plane.  I for one would love to see it modeled.  Take a few minutes and email HT about having all the data on the aircraft, he may be interested in what you have.

Hi JEK,
The Italian planes were surely beautiful.

They are my favorite WWII planes from an appearance perspective, you guys know how to make deadly look good.

Ah - I see the wings are very different.

The G.55 has a wing planform similar to the P-51D, with extensions at the leading edge roots.

The MC.205V - just look at the one in AH. Tapered with rounded wingtips. One wing is longer than the other.

The Re.2005 has a semi-elliptical wing with a slightly swept leading edge; kind of like the P-47, and to a lesser extent the Spitfire.

And of the three, the G55 was the best interceptor, being both the fastest at alt and having 3x20mm cannon and 2x50cal. I would vote for the G55 (in fact I did on Target's survey!).

The Re2005 certainly was pretty, but its pilots were a bit afraid of the tail popping off...

I think it would be a good addition to the stable if the performance variation  complemented the 202 & 205. It looks like it may be very manuverable? Does anyone have any performance data to publish?
BTW I can hardly wait for the P-51Q maybe I can run even faster...

Kieren   ,

I think you are right. Luftwaffe test pilots were of the same opinion when they combat tested all Series 5 fighters (february 1943).
With good max speed, maneuverability and heavy armament, the G.55 was a good 1943-44 high alt interceptor, much better than the C.205V at 20K+.

Anyway PYRO has the original flight manual of the G.55 and beautiful references. Who knows?
