I am totally "newbie" 'd out...anyone else?
« on: November 26, 2001, 11:59:00 PM »
I'm a bad person, I'll 'fess up right here and now.  My patience has worn out with the influx of newbies, the time for "Hello, welcome aboard" has passed and the "Shaddup and go read the doc's" is becoming the knee jerk reaction.

And its not so much the Air Warrior guys, most of those folks are great fellas and say their Hello's to the room and commence play.

What's ticking me off is all the newbie's who refuse to read the docs, learn to play in the Training Room, and constantly try joining your aircraft.  I had 8 players in a 1/2 hour period try joining my Typhoon.  A quick check to the roster show's their rank of Zero.

We all learned this game at one point.  Some nice folks lead me to the training room, and folks in there showed me how to fly the various planes, and gave me URLs to their websites and others on the pro's and con's of each aircraft, etc etc.  Now, we have folks signing on with no bother to read the help files or stop by the training.  Nope, let's plop down into the Main Arena, where everyone is, and pester the paying users.  "HOW DO I BOMB?"  "HOW DO I MOVE TO A DIFFERENT BASE" and the rantings go on and on.  Forget relying on channel 2 for any status on fields or strategy.  We've got to stop what we're doing and educate "Skippy", King of the Dweebs.

For a while, I endured it.  But now, its just a constant thing.  And I know a few others agree with me, YES newbies are good for the game but there's a right way and a wrong way to get started.  And I've got fellas reminding me of what a jerk I am for suggesting the newbie go into the training room and LEARN.  My logic (really, there is some...) is if they learn in there, not only are folks who are PATIENT and LIKE teaching people in there, but the poor newbie might be a bit less frustrated, and less a pain in the butt to the rest of the gaming community in the Main.

And if you bring a newbie into the game, how's about going into private chat with him, so those of us following the buffer for news on backup and other game situations do not have to squint through you and skippy's ramblings on "Gee the La7 is fast"   :)

I want to be considerate to the newbies, I simply request that they be respectful to the members that are paying to play.

Am I outta line here, or simply asking too much?

LOL!

Yesterday my patience ran out. "how do u select dt"...then "HOW DO U SELECT DT ANYONE?????????!!!!!!!!!"

Notice the added "!"s and "?". Adding one multiplies the value of the question: adding two quadruples it.

Standard answer is "Press enter three times, then look up the acronym "RTFM".

I don't mind helping out: am glad to. It's just that answering the questions that are answered easily by the manual is becoming a wee bit tedious.

Oh well, these guys will soon be Aces anyhow  :)

heh did that once, just to joke with a guy who was asking if there was any cheat mode in AH. Told him that the menu popped up with ALT-F4 (thinking he'd notice it).

In a couple of minutes he was back saying AH had crashed to desktop while trying to get the cheat menu open

Think I died laughing  :D

LePaul-

No, you are not bad, teaching is not for everyone. No offense intended, believe me! You have a small snapshot there of what it can be like for a teacher in a classroom all day long.

LePaul - I appreciate your difficulty, but it has to be said that it's not always easy to find the necessary documents.  Indeed, I am having problems using the Aces High Help application itself!  I've installed it, but can't make it run.  See my topic at  http://www.hitechcreations.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=012717

Also, you must remember that there may be a new influx of players into Aces High. Air Warrior has just emptied out, and now the future of iEN's Warbirds and indeed iEN itself looks to be in doubt.

StSanta!  I'm afraid I was the one asking for help about attaching Drop Tanks. My apologies for not being more specific in my query, but there is a length limit to text messages. I have it figured out now. Someone was kind enough to answer me - I think it was OCT

By the way, LePaul - I looked at your picture. You are very nice looking with nice hair and features. But who's that ugly brute sitting behind you?      :D

Normal to feel that way...still, we should do all we can to grow the community.

We were all this way at one time or another...to isolate folks by complaining about them on an open forum is inappropriate.

I haven't had a single newbie get on the comms after being shot down and make excuses, cuss or criticize the method by which it was done in the last month and a half.  Seems you have to be a vet to do that

Emm disagree.

To ask about the game is one thing. We've all been new and asked things on the MA about the game. But mostly in a polite way and trying to be humble.

But to yell in country and/or in open channel if you don't get an immediate, concise answer, is another thing. Unpolite, and unappropiate. The people in the MA isn't there to teach the newbies, they are there to have fun.

Each time I see a guy with that "I DEMAND people to help me" attitude, I simply forget about the guy. I even don't take the work to squelch him. Those kind of guys seem like thinking they MUST be helped no matter what. And if you aren't in the best of the moods it can get really pissing sometimes.

As I said, we've all been new but when we first logged in we didn't start typing in caps demanding for immediate attention from the guys online.

Is dont really mind this problem, I've taken newbies to the TA several times (not being a trainer) and been happy to do it. But I very well understand the people who are really fed up with some newbies' attitude in the MA.

Yes, but perhaps there is insufficient help construction by HTC.
Posting toward that issue would be appropriate.

Personally I get a touch aggrevated that I have to .squelch 1  in order to catch squad or country info before it gets off the 200 lines per minute buffer.

I think a major portion of this would be nullified if HTC were to post a simple(printable) key config layout.
Then when the "How do you drop bombs?" pops up, we could just type out, "Newbie, Please visit http://help.hitechcreations.com/keys  , or something of the sort.
It might also be nice to have the download page pop up a new browser window which puts that page on top when someone tries to download. Sort of force them to recognize that help is available "Outside" the game.

Of course, this would require HTC to develope a help system.  ;)

For future ref. HT said in his interview at the CON that they were looking to "Advertise" publicly in the future.
If you think things are annoying now, just wait.

While I don't disagree to a point with the suggestions forwarded here to alleviate the minor irritations of so many newbies, you guys have to realize when you see so many new people at once you are going to have these types of questions and occurences. It's natural, and it's short-term. If you don't want to help them, don't. If you do, do. It will all pass soon enough.
