If it wasn't a significant proportional change (say 15% or more of the aircraft's length or wingspan) then I'd say the -4 should read 'F4U'. For some reason I thought the -4 had a physically longer engine (more cylinder banks) than the -1s did.

Very good idea this one, and heads further down the road of immersion.

If not "doable" (due to jitech just not having time for it or some system limitation) then I would prefer model specific icons for all planes or, the other extreme, some level of generic icon for all planes.
