All good points except the one about the 109 being an effective fighter at the end of its production run. If it finishes in Spain. thats not the case. The F4 Phantom was in production when the spanish line finished.

About half of all MkXIV Spits where "razorbacks" and about half were bubble canopy Spitfires.

"Ginger" Lacey's far east squadron recieved a shipment of bubble canopy Spitfire MkXIVs and he refused them on the grounds that they weren't Spitfires, "it wasn't a bloody Spitfire" is how he put it.  The RAF gave them to a squadron that was flying war weary Hurricane MkIIs and they were very glad to have them.  Squadron Leader Lacey was then sent a bunch of "razorback" Spitfire MkXIVs which he found to be acceptable.

The nose on the Griffon engined Spitfires had a very noticable downward curve to them.  That may be a bit exagerated in that picture, but it is essentially correct.

Actually they started producing bubble canopied Spitfire MkXIVs in June of 1944.

I don't know where you got the 1945 date, but if you could tell me I'd appriciate it.

Late Marque Spitfires Aces... I can get you the ISBN if you want but its an Osprey Book of the Aces series.

The Spitfires with bubble canopies in 44 were prolly field mods... spits started coming out of the factory with bubble canopies in 45.

Why? It's beautiful, it's fast, it's manoeuverable. Not the very best in any thing, but very good at everything, and quite my kind of plane - until Spit14 is released.  

I only wish it carried more fuel and... the LA-5FN's jug of vodka behind the pilot.

Why? Same as all the Hellcat, Jug, and Warhawk lovers, it's not beautiful in the normal sense.. but man, it has something about it!!!!!

And in the case of pure beauty and nothing else, the Lightning (and then I don't refer to that incredibly ugly cumbersome British Jet Interceptor with it's two engines strapped on top of eachother)!!

The question is what is MY favorite.  

Well, the F4U was thee Marine's Plane. The Japanese called it the "Whisling Death".

Great for close air support of ground troops.  The Marines pioneered and perfected close air support.  There was something about a F4 Phantom comming in at tree top level and laying a precision drop of napalm within a grenades throw of your position, that cannot be described.  Knowing there were Phantoms and Cobra Gunships made life a little easier in Vietnam  

Anyway, the F4U is gull winged, distinctive looking, hard hitting, powerful, reliable, and tough, like the Marines who flew it, and the Marines it flew support for.

Yep, the Corsair was a Marines plane, and as an X-Marine what else would I choose?  

I also have a soft spot for the Spitfire... a plane as dashing as the RAF.  [I also have a soft spot for the Brits, BTW   ]

If I couldn't fly a Corsair, probably the Pony or the P-38, even if they are "Chairforce" planes  .

Depending on your definition of WWII plane I'll submit 2.
1st pick but maybe not a legal choice. Horten 229 If you are not familiar with this plane, do yourself a favor and check it out. Simply an engineering masterpiece, IMHO not equaled untill f-86's and mig-15's. And maybe not even then.
2nd pick ME-163 Yeah, yeah, I know it had problems, but 15k/min climb in WWII is insane!!! That's 2 minutes to intercept b-17's at their max alt.
