It's almost time! (Well, ignoring last nights snow..)
Hmmmmmm fried fillet, red beans, and corn bread! And perhaps the amusing house lager.

It's been crappy every time I've gone fishing. The kids toss too many rocks into the water to ever catch anything.

Lol. Toss them in and tell them not to come back up for air without a fish in their mouth!

I've caught them by accident, but never gone out for them specifically. I usually go for bass and pike. Usually end up with crappie, perch and bullhead.
BTW, this is a crappie for you smart alecks. Its kind of like the ugly lovechild of a largemouth bass and a pumpkinseed sunfish.

Some say ugly. I say delicious!

Taste: Walleye and perch . I don't suppose they have much walleye in TX though.
-
Actually smallmouth bass is the best I've tasted. Caught on was about 16 inches, but it swallowed the hook, so we kept it since it was going to die anyway. Did it up on the grill, it was absolutely delicious.
I've known several people who swear northern pike is also great if you can cut it up without getting all the bones. Not an easy thing to do though.
Had enough perch and walleye over the years that I can't stand them anymore.

Crappie are fun to catch for the kids. You can catch alot of them in a short amount of time where we fish. Primarily we target Walleye but catch perch and crappie while doing so. We also never take more than what we eat that night. We will throw them back before taking more than we eat.

I catch & release most unless a friend wants some fish. I am a shrimp eater.... ahh lahk shrimp any way you cun fix et.

Never have tried walleye. Strangly never had small mouth bass either.
Need to give those a try, Lake Grapevine nearby has them.
But Crappie, yeah baby, in two weeks they'll be hitting those shallows.

I catch and release. I have released 6 lb smallies in front of my neighbor(at our Wisconsin house) and he practically cried. He wanted to eat/mount it.(no he did not want to have sex with the fish, you pervs)
I'm no PETA memeber, I just want to catch them agian later. :aok

AHH...
You guys are killing me.
I just moved back to Michigan from 2 years in Florida. All these pictures of fish and talk of fishing have me reserving air fare back to Fl. just so I can do some fishing...
Not to mention the fact it is 25 degrees with 6 inches of snow on the way tonight and it is 80 down there.
Good luck to all fisherman (and fisherwomen) this season.

Here is a nice Tiger Muskie caught in the lake across the street from me. The kids don't have the patience for Tiger Muskie fishing yet. Takes an average of 12 hours of fishing to land one.

I've only ever caught one Tiger, no real Muskies. Lots of Northerns over the years though.
My Great Grandfather cught one up in Canada decades ago that won a Field And Stream contest. I had the badge he got for it for years until my mom pawned it off. My Grandparents still have it mounted in their living room. Looks big enough that it could swallow the Northern my Grandfather caught and had mounted on the opposite wall.
I do still have his old tackle box and all his old lures still in their boxes. :aok
-
nice Rip!
-
Why I fish for Northerns and Muskies- they are absolutely vicious, and you usually catch them by accident. I've even heard stories of guys landing them with the fish they originally caught in the belly of the beast, or of being about to land a fish and having it blasted from underneath by Jaws. For example-

My father has two tanks on the property; a one acre tank behind his house and a five acre one in the back.
All the bass and catfish caught in the one acre tank is either eaten or taken to the five acre tank. This leaves mostly perch in the one acre tank.
My kids love to fish for perch (or crappie) with a cork and corn on a hook.
I prefer to get a plastic worm or spinning bait and work the shallows in the five acre tank. To me fishing is an active sport, not a passive one.
-
I usually fish with spoons, spinners, or rapalas. Occasionally I'll throw out a minnow under a bobber, but I get bored easy- unless the beer is kept good and cold.
-
GWD is an avid crappie fisherman. He's posted some pics of his catches and I must say, he knows where to find them. :aok
-
Wabbit, the crappie were already staging pretty good here at Tawakoni before the cool spell. They have probably moved back out a bit since then.
It will be like that for a while I suppose. It seems like it is every year.
Warm/cool- In/out.
The shoreline here comes up to adjoin my backyard.
About an hour or so before dark, day before yesterday, I decided to check out the kitties.
In about 45 minutes I had 5 channels, with the smallest being around 3 1/2 lbs, the largest 4 1/2 to 5. Those filets gonna be might tastey tonight. :)
While the water was down a couple of years ago, I desilted our cove and dug a 20 ft. wide channel, about 150 yds long leading up to my boat slip.
Should be some good crappie fishing when spawn hits.
Can`t wait

Yeah I like crappies. I got a funny crappie story. Im a big water salmon troller, among other things in the fishing world. So one year my partner and I went to Greers Ferry Lake down In Arkansas in April for spring walleye.
The walleye were off so we started drowning minnows for crappie and wipers, "striper/white bass mix". I was lost cause I almost never use live bait in fresh water and for 2 days we didnt catch anything.
So on the 3rd day I told my buddies were doing it my way. I broke out my trolling gear, dipsey divers, slide divers, downriggers, planers boards, long lead lines, I had 12 rods hanging off that 22 foot deep V rig of mine. I started running small fat shad plugs right over the brush at the first break offshore, "thats first dropoff for you non sportsmen". Luckily I had my light trolling rigs with me, the kind I use for spring coho and walleye.
Dudes we started hitting honest 3lb crappies and bigger. They were so big they didn't even look like crappie. These crappie were coming off those bushes and cover and attacking those plugs like they were muskie. I dont know how many we caught in 4 days but there was no limit back then and we caught a ton. We also caught wipers and smallies that we threw back. Boy I remember the looks those southern bass fisherman gave us when we rounded the bend with all those rigs hanging off the boat. Like we were from the moon.
After the 4th day a cold front hit and that was it. About 1/2 dozen of those crappie I should have had mounted but when your young you think your always going to catch bigger and better. I never hit the crappie quite so good again.
And muskie? I love fishing muskie. A muskie stick is a different breed. We'll spend weeks pounding water to catch one big fish and then just throw it back in the water.

Twelve foot jon-boat, two foot sculling paddle, Ambassadeur 5000 loaded with 15 to 20 lb test line, five foot bass rod of medium stiffness at the tip, Lucky 13, Creek Chub, and if worse comes to worse, a spinner bait .
Cap, sunglasses, ice-chest with drinks, vienna sausages and crackers, afloat on a cypress covered lake or swamp.
Or, if I'm wanting to see fish strikes that'll have me going weak in the knees, I'll try doodle-sockin'.

You bastards just had to go and start this thread while I'm suffering from the worst cabin fever of my life. All I want is open water..........
Here's a crappie recipe I worked out towards the end of last summer. I take 2 tbsp(for 4 to 6 fillets) of butter and slice it about 1/8" and lay half out on a sheet of tinfoil, lay out fillets, then put the rest of the butter on top. Dice some green, red, and jalapeno peppers, and some onions and spread them about. Add salt and pepper, and sometimes a bit of hot sauce or parmesan cheese. Place another sheet of tinfoil over the top and bake at 350 for about 18 minutes or so. It still doesn't top fried fish, with fried potatoes and green beans, but served with some wild rice or couscous it is a delicious and much lighter alternative.
For those of you who have never had walleye, if you like fish you must try it. It is IMO the best tasting of all the freshwater species, and even if you can't catch them where you live a decent seafood joint should still have it.

Crappie get a lot larger than bluegill. They have less bones also.
The meat of the Crappie is about as white and flakey as you can get.
A great meal for the fish lover.
I went yesterday and reregistered the toon.
Was planning on charging the battery back up to full, mounting the electronics etc. today.........

Out of Westport or Ilwaco Washington. These 18 were from a trip on a friends boat a couple years ago. Basically its a 50 mile jaunt out and hunt down the schools or troll deal. Picked up my own boat last year so it will become a more common thing.. If anyone is in the Seattle area during June-Sept I'll be happy to take them out.

My biology teacher is a professional fisherman. If anyone recognizes the name Thomas Tidwell. He is pretty cool and he takes people fishing during the summer for his career. His hobby is teaching (yea right). Oh and Granger lake in Texas, and Georgetown Lake in Texas are known for great crappie fishing. Since they are about 20-40 feet and there are lots of trees. The crappie love those lakes.

Ignoring your idiotic comment...
Of tropical sunfish body shape, the bluegill's most notable feature is the blue or black "ear", actually an extension of the gill cover called the opercular flap.
Look closely. I could circle it for you if you like.
-
Look closely. I could circle it for you if you like.
There are certain broad similarities. Not suprising since they are both members of the sunfish family. However, at least in Texas, there is a signifigant size difference. Unless you are a very lucky BlueGill fisherman or a very unlucky Crappie fisherman. ;)
ON a side note, I just recently learned that Largemouth Bass are not true Bass but also a part of the sunfish family along with BlueGill and Crappie. :huh

I'd love to fish on Sunday but I've got to leave for Alberta, Canada on Monday.

I haven't fished for 'em in years but they are the best tastin' fresh water fish imo. When I was much younger we'd go out and fish most of the night, catch 60-70, have a great fish fry the next day.
