Title: Texas
Post by: Timofei on September 05, 2008, 12:27:59 PM
Just noticed RedTop's location:
"Central Texas / Northern Mexico..same thing"

Which brings questions:
Who is a Texan ?
Who should really own Texas ?
"In 1821, after the Mexican War of Independence, the territory became a part of the new country.Texas became the northern section of Coahuila y Tejas in 1824. Mexico ended the Spanish policy of allowing only full-blooded Spaniards to settle Texas."

Sour grapes revisionist history won't get Texas back to Mexico.

I think what RedTop means (in a politically very correct language) is that there are way too many Mexican inhabitants in Texas. But perhaps they are just regaining (peacefully) the land they lost by violence.

You dont think they are already doing that now?

The Mexican government hasnt exactly discouraged their population from illegally crossing the border.
In some cases they've actually helped them.

They realise they cant beat us militarily.
So they will just peacefully invade us under the guise of "A better life"

I say take our Iraqi And Afghanistan war veterans. and when they rotate back to the states.Rather then subject them to the culture shock of going from a hostile and sometimes intense environment in a war zone to life as normal back in the USA.
Put them along the border for a kind of cooling off and winding down period. Then ease them back into the population.

Its a win win situation.
The border gets guarded. and it will probably help with some of the soldiers lingering mental aspects.

Why would it belong to Mexico rightfully?

Wouldn't the Amerinds have prior claim?

If they stole it from the Amerinds, do they have a right to whine when we steal it from them?

Fact is, we won it by force of arms.  If they want it back, then let them field their troops.

Get rid of all the illeagals in Texas and the rest of America. Hell let those who support illeagal immigration go to mexico as well since they love the people so much and wish to change how we do things in favor of the law breakers. They can apply to come back.

Title: Re: Texas
Post by: Timofei on September 06, 2008, 11:28:38 AM
The major reason Texas wanted independency:
Many of the Anglo-American settlers owned slaves. Texas was granted a one-year exemption from Mexico's 1829 edict outlawing slavery but Mexican president Anastasio Bustamante ordered that all slaves be freed in 1830.To circumvent the law, many Anglo colonists converted their slaves into indentured servants for life. By 1836 there were 5,000 slaves in Texas.
In 1836, the Texans adopted a constitution that formally legalized slavery. The Republic of Texas included the area of the present state of Texas, and additional unoccupied territory to the west and northwest. Most Texans wanted their Republic to be annexed into the United States. However, strong abolitionist opposition to adding a slave state blocked Texas's admission until pro-annexation James K. Polk won the election of 1844.

The Nueces massacre was a violent confrontation between Confederate soldiers and German Texans on August 10, 1862 in Kinney County, Texas.
German Texans tended to support the Union and had few slaves. Gillespie and other central Hill Country counties had voted against secession. By August 1862, a party of 61 German Texans from the Hill Country counties, who were fleeing to Mexico, was overtaken by the Texas Confederate cavalrymen on the Nueces River. Shots were fired and as a result 34 German Texans were killed, with some being executed after being taken prisoner. The Germans from Central Texas were fortunate to avoid such violence. They successfully traveled to Mexico City under the leadership of Paul Machemehl of Austin County.
The Treüe der Union ("True to the Union") monument to the German Texans slain at the Nueces massacre was dedicated on August 10, 1866 and sits in Comfort, where the remains of the Unionists are interred. It is the oldest Civil War monument in Texas and the only one dedicated to Union sympathizers in all of the former Confederate States of America (apart from national cemeteries).

Sources, look Wikipedia or book. I'm too tired to argue with hicks right now.

here we go, since I am a PROUD Texan (born and raised) I decided to throw in my $.02 worth.

Before I start, in an effort to prevent the personal attacks some on this board love to engage in, let me say what my perspective is.

Texas is simply the greatest land in the entire world.  I am thankful that the good lord blessed me by being born and living in the Lone Star State.  Texas should remain "as is" despite the fact that indepedence does sound so appealing.

Having said that,
1.  We (USA) did steal it from Mexico.  Yes, we would like to think the "Texans" did it, but i would invite all of you to visit the Alamo (I live in San Antonio) and see the posters promising land to all Americans who fight for Texas.  I would also invite you all to see the STATE flags that hang in the hall of heroes, which are from every US state imaginable.  The Texas war of Independence was a mercenary war by the USA. It happens get over it.
2.  Mexico has NEVER made a claim to regain Texas in any international court or organization.
3.  Illegal immigrants flee Mexico because they cant make a decent living there, so, they don't want to turn it into what they left.  I know many of you with GE D's will want to argue this point, please don't.
4.  The ignorant will scream "They are taking Texas back" just like they scream about the Irish, Japanese, Chinese, catholics, Italians, etc, etc.
5.  When a "Mexican" comes here and gets the right to vote and he votes in another "Mexican" blah, blah, blah, blah.  When any person gets the right to vote it is because he/she is an AMERICAN citizen.  You cannot be a governor, major, etc, without being am AMERICAN citizen.  What these people are complaining about is a person of Hispanic heritage voting or holding office.  That is textbook racism.

One of the worst atrocities of the Civil War in Texas happened to a family that first settled about 2 or 3 miles from where I live. I think it was a guy whose last name was Sawyer, his brother, step brother, and 2 others were on their way to Mexico, when a group of confederates caught them. They then after getting drunk hung them.  (not like kicking off the horse and breaking your neck, actually roping them up on the ground and letting them suffocate.) I dont know if it was ever charged though.
