Just wondering what you guys think are the best LOOKING aircraft? In the game or not...
Not the best performance, or the most effective... Just the coolest looking!!!
Here is mine... CR32

Where's that picture of the crazy battleship/airplane with the 75mm cannon and ~24 separate props? :lol

Yeah! That's my pick! :aok The ufo with swastikas adds good atmosphere.

I'll take this fully armed version over the B-29 any day!

I love the two people in the lower right hand corner who look like they have their bags packed for a summer getaway.

Well, I meant planes that actually exist... But whatever, have fun with it!!!!
Here is another one of my Favs, a Pfalz DIII

I think we've had a post like this recently, but who cares, its a fun one. :aok
In the last post I believe i posted this plane, and I stand by my last pick. :rock
The thing just looks so slippery and fast.
And I'd like to drive this to the airfield to fly it

What happened?
-
What happened?
The pic Boner posted is of the Replica that Jim Wright built and flew to the 2003 OshKosh show. He went down with the plane on the way home.
But that is by far one of the most beautiful things created.

I don't know why you guys keep torturing yourselves with threads like these when you know the answer already.

Actually the G model with a bunch of drop tanks and air to air rockets slung under the wings is one of the most beautiful things ever to take flight IMO but I couldn't fight the pic I was looking for.
Anything with German, Italian or Russian lines really :D

110 would be in my top 10 if it was udated in the game.

I'm also a fan of the single-engined German fighters... particularly from the 109 series, the C series to the E-3- (C's here)
And from the 190 series the A series, particularly from the A-1 to A-6 (pre-MG131) (A-4 or earlier here? Nevermind the fake, incorrectly proportioned markings.... :( )
Of course, the Macchi C 202...
And the Yak series :D
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Yak_9_1.jpg)
Oh, and having seen (and especially, heard!) a flying Spitfire Mk 18 in real life, I have to say it's the sexiest aircraft I've ever seen in person... this includes ponies, jugs, corsairs and several others....

and of course F4U, P51D are the "prettiest" of all the War Birds I have seen over the years from WWII. I have seen Spit6/9, Hurri, Typhie, JU88, HE111, B17, B24, B26, C47, B25, P47, Yak9, TBM, F4F and the 51D and F4U Corsair.

19 years in the Air Force and still going strong. I see airplanes come and go, and have worked at many an air show. And get tons of pics and read lots of stuff.
I have an affinity for the T37 Dragon fly and other like minded mid 1960-80's small country Air to Ground Platforms. Probably because so many can be purchased reasonably (50-100K USD) and you can fly them all over the place.

I am with Saxman and Steve. Connecticut has far too many stuck up, snobby, superficial places and people for our very own official State Warbird to be anything but the best looking.

Bf109, no contest.
Restored Bf109G, test flight
It may not have been the best fighter, but when it comes to looks... nothing comes close.
US planes are clumsy pigs
UK planes are like ducks with oversized wings
JP planes are like midget flies
USSR planes are smurfy radials on wood frames
Italian planes, with a long tradition of beautiful aircraft, are the only competition, but IMO a bit too sporty looking... pointy like a pencil, if you ask me.
Only the 109, holds the perfect balance. Slick, inline design with nice curves lines all around, light and nimble profile and yet doesn't feel like a dwarf, and the sinister feeling frontal profile that forms an accute "V" shape...
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh....

Agreed. I saw a photo of Hawk 1 a restored Sabre in RCAF markings and it struck me that they don't get any prettier then that. Somehow the Sabre captures the best of the WW2 era and brings it into the jet age before they got too computerized.

This a/c is hangered across the river from where I live. I see Potter's Spit, Hurrie and P-51 flying occasionally but have yet to see the Golden Hawk. :cry
Years ago at an air show at Rockcliffe, the Hawks made a spectacular entrance in the good old days of air shows. Rockcliffe airbase is situated between the Ottawa River and a small cliff. The Hawks came over the cliff at low level individually unannounced. No sooner had roar of the first one subsided, the next Hawk came over the cliff until all 7 had done so.
Not only did the team perform the loops, rolls and other maneuvers standard to military formation flying, they had their own trademark maneuvers. One of the Golden Hawks' signature stunts was a low-level flyby of the crowd with their canopies open, waving at the spectators. The Golden Hawks pioneered the bomb burst maneuver and the use of two solo pilots working together as part of the aerial demonstration which virtually every military team since has adopted in various ways.

P-39

Not too sure if thats the fuel leaking.
It looks more like it just got done re-fueling.
Either way, its one of the most impressive planes of the lot.
-
You're probably right. Actually looks like both. The Blackbird leaked fuel trough the skin at subsonic speeds.

According to a show I was watching about it on the history channel (yeah, I know) fuel leaks until the titanium heats up and expands enough to stop it from doing so, in high speed flight.

Yup, I've heard that too.
But in the case of this photo, I don't believe that the fuel on the surfaces behind the "re-fueling hatch", or on the wings is from fuel seepage.
More than likely its from a little spillage after the disconnect.

The F-15 really is a sexy aircraft, along with the F-16 and the F-18. The F-22 and the F-35 are ugly as sin IMO.
Agreed, even the F-14 with its odd airbrakes look better than those two.
-
Well you don't have to look at the F-22, you prolly couldn't if you were in an enemy aircraft, it would sense you on radar before you saw it, send out an XLAA and blow you outta the sky just like that. :)
I just like the sleek designs of the plane, the F-35 isn't on my top ten list, it is pretty ugly.
But if it makes you all happy I'll say F8F Bearcat, good lookin plane.

Can't believe I didn't post in this, well hats off :salute

Be honest with yourself. Does anything quite match a Spitfire for beauty and grace???
These were taken at a recent Air Show. Note how the fast shutter speed froze the propeller:

I'm not sure what they did to the cockpit on this plane, though. Still, the plane remains drop dead gorgeous.

TwinEng,
The cockpit was expanded for a second seat is what happened.

It is a Spit IX trainer.
Mk T. IX and TR. 9 (type 509)
Although there were wartime conversions of the Spitfire into a two-seat trainer including the one-off modification of a Mk VC by RAF no. 261 Squadron and a Mk IX converted for use as a trainer by the Soviets, the two-seat Spitfire trainer was primarily a postwar program. In 1946, a MK VIII (MT818) was the first Vickers-built trainer built as a demonstrator, but in 1948, 10 Spitfire T Mk IXs, were exported to India. In 1951, a further six TR 9 trainers were converted from the standard Mk IX to train pilots for the Irish Air Corps (IAC) Seafire fleet. The Spitfires provided transition training that included gunnery practice since the type was equipped with two .303 Browning machine guns, one in each outer wing bay. Most of the TR 9 aircraft passed to the ground technical training school at Baldonnel where they were used as instructional airframes for the training of aircraft engineers for the Air Corps. Four of the IAC aircraft survived and two went on to join the warbird fleet in the 1970s and later.
There was a TV show a couple of years ago where 4 pilots got a chance to fly the 'Grace' Spit. The instructor pilot/owner is a woman, hence the name.

The TSR2 the greatest plane never to be put into production .
Climb rated 50,000 ftpm initial rate
max ceiling: 60,000ft
max speed at 50,000: Mach 2.4
max speed at sea level: Mach 1.2
rang: 1,500NM with 1 stand off Cruses missile or 3,000lb of conventional bombs
or
2,300NM with 1,500 lb of conventional bombs and external drop tanks
would have been first strike aircraft to use terrain following radar for low level incursions . Side looking radar for recon role . plus it looked great in white or RAF camouflage options

Hm, B3YT, the BAC TSR2 reminds me of another amazing plane that never entered service....
This one was cancelled in 1959; 6 of which were built before cancellation.
Built in Canada, the plane's got very similar performance characteristics to the TSR2. The Avro Arrow carried an assortment of air-to-air missles all internally, thereby allowing it to fly past Mach 2 and still carry a full weapons load.

I just cannot pick one overall...
Pre WWII:
Gotha Bomber:
WWII: It's a toss up between several, but the plane that truly agrees with me, the plane that makes me feel like I belong in it, that I seem to have a bizarre emotional connection with, is only the Bf-109.
And then, there is the gorgeous B-17F:

Korean War, its the F-86 but there are too many pictures there.
Vietnam, no question, the F-4:

The best looking single-engine prop fighter of WW II is in my opinion the Ki-61, particularly the later, heavier and lower-performance long-nose Kai-Tei, which was often canibalized by ground crews for parts to keep the older, higher-performance short-nose Koh-Otsu-Hei flying...
The Tei was also used a lot as a kamikaze aircraft, but even the earlier short-nose ones were hardly scorchers at 600 km/h, though for the same power available they were much better than the Me-109E.

did you know it's initial climb rate was 50k ft per Min . One French test pilot used reheat on take off and before he could retract the under carriage 20 seconds later he was at 20K . It could climb vertically while accelerating . had a model of one hanging from my ceiling when i was younger.

TU-95. NATO flights are often sent up to intercept flights of these. Here is one account.
"In 1982, when a Tu-95 flew along the coast of Alaska, intercepting F-15 pilot Richard Ellis held up a Playboy magazine against his cockpit glass for the Soviet crew to see."

what you do is find the image you like, save it to your computer, and upload it to photobucket. once there, click on "share" from the drop-down menu, click "post to website" and once there you go over to "get link codes" and copy and paste the code that starts with [IMG]

In the last post I believe i posted this plane, and I stand by my last pick. :rock
The thing just looks so slippery and fast.

And I'd like to drive this to the airfield to fly it

The Hughes H-1 Racer IS a great one!

would that be the Gloster Gladiator?
she is beautiful :aok
and, it does meet criteria to enter the game, as it saw extensive combat against the I-talians in North Africa and Malta

P38 on steriods :O lol P61 For The Win

I'd say the P-61 is a neat looking aircraft, but for twin boom designs you can't beat the early P-38s in attractiveness.

since when was the F7F Tigercat the widowmaker exactly? :headscratch: Widowmaker was the F4U Corsair's nickname due to dangerous conditions on takeoff and landing on carriers with them. Many deaths occured due to the corsair especially in the early models. Ty for the nice choice compliment though :aok

That's my mistake, I was thinking of the P61, and was actually the "Black Widow" not widow maker. I had a little distorted vision last night when I was posting. Now that I have some coffee and goods night rest, I am definitely wrong in my statement. Thanks for the catch Bar. <S>

:) no problemo speak, my dad did the exact same thing as you once. said the P61 was the widowmaker

B-26 was official nickname was the"Marauder" but was called the Widow Maker by her crews. F4U was called the ensign eliminator for it's stall and landing characteristics.

i've never heard this... whenever i hear F4U i hear widowmaker. Although you are a VF-17 pilot so you prob know your stuff :aok
-
B-26 was also known, unofficially of course, as the "Flying Prostitute", no visible means of support.
-
Lots of planes have aquired the name of "widowmaker", due to some type of nastyness in their flight characteristics.. Or, a reputation for catastrophic failure in the air, deserved or not.. All it takes is the bad rep, to get the name stuck on it..
A few not mentioned so far, Sopwith Camel, GeeBee Racer, Mig3, F100 Super Sabre, F104 Starfighter, AV8a Harrier..

B-1B Lancer
You just can't beat it. I was at an airshow recently at Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX, celebrating 25 years of having B-1B's at the base, they had them doing afterburner passes at low alt and such, it was AWESOME!
As for my favorite WWII aircraft, I have to go with the Avia B.534, it retains that biplane grace and elegance in the age when everyone wanted fast monoplanes and such.

Spitfire F.Mk XIV and Mosquito FB.Mk VI.
In terms of the Spit, and despite being a Spitfire XII fanatic, I've come to the conclusion that the best looking of the Spit family are actually two of the Seafires. The Merlin Seafire LIII and the Griffon Seafire XV. I don't feel as guilty about the XV as it's the RN version of the Spit XII
The Malcom hood P51B/C is the best looking of the Mustangs
109E7 is the nicest looking of that series. 190A8/F8 with the later canopy is the nicest looking of the 190s to me.
P38E/F/G/H small intake versions of the 38 are a tie since they're essentially identical

There are many many beautiful planes in this world and I really can't name one. Not sure if this one has been posted to this thread but here goes...

The #1 most beautiful and sexiest airplane of all time is the Seafire Mk 47. We all know that ultimate test of manhood in flying is being able to catch the third wire after all. :D

Nemesisnxt is an awesome plane but certainly wouldn't like to be in one when it suffers an engine failure in a cross country situation. :uhoh
