I've taken a picture from Google Earth. Find it, and you get to post the next picture for us to find. Just remember to remove the lat/long info from the picture, and don't leave any clues in the name you give the picture (otherwise that shows up in the properties).

-
it's somewhere in NY or new england, north eastern seaboard.
-
Nope
-
corpis christy?
-
nope
-
Any hints....mainland US? (doubtful)
Throw me a bone here....
-
It's not a US place (not a state or territory).
-
lol I figured out that part already!
:D
-
It's not australia.
-
Did you rotate that coastline? What's throwing me off is the harbor, the greenish water near shore and the steep drop to deep water off the reef.

Nope, I didn't rotate it. Anytime you rotate it, the compass indicator will show where the new N is. :)
-
Nor Africa...
-
Yes, it's somewhere on an African coastline.
-
Really.....hmmm...
-
Mogadishu...
-
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh121/purplehaze835/Strip-1.jpg)
You will never find it using natural geological features....
-
Mogadishu...
Yep! Good job :) You post one now. :)
Oops, you already did :)
It's just west of Area 51, underground nuclear testing site centered at 37.04.24.60N, 116.02.06.38W
(my son knew that picture from memory, so we looked it right up... woot!)
-

Hint, map is about 15x12 lkm
-
I know I'm getting out of order, but this was just too good to pass up!
Hint: It's where Texas is going to get beat next week, thereby saving UT the embarrassment of getting slaughtered in a possible national championship bowl game. :neener:

That's at College Station, TX

Snefens, yours looks pretty consistent with the terrain/communities in Latvia & Estonia... but I'm tired of looking. I'll look again after a nap & a cup of coffee. :)
-
I looked for a day & didn't find it. Got a hint, snefens?

Hmmm some where in Alaska, Anchorage area?
-
.
-
no hint?
-
Sorry, forgot I had this out here.
More hints:
-Not on american continent.
-Town has about 40,000 inhabitants.
-The upper land area is part of a large peninsula.
-
I love this game, but this one has me stumped. :headscratch:
- Not a mountainous area.
- Appears to have a clover leaf type highway interchange.
Is the peninsula part of a continental land mass, or an island?
-
Ok, more hints:
It's on the Euro-Asia continental plate.
The Germans got within 60km of this important rail line (the one crossing the bay) in WWII.
-
The land does not look highly parceled. High latitudes?

Kandalaksha, Russia, in the Murmansk province at the NW tip of the White Sea.
67°13′N 32°20′E / 67.217°N 32.333°E according to Wiki.
If I followed it correctly, the rail line was important because it came from the port of Murmansk, where a lot of western aid arrived.

Mine too, I was thinking somewhere along the Mississippi River but I couldn't find it anywhere or maybe I just missed it.
-
LOL. When I saw that last one, I thought
"Boy, that's so ugly it's gotta be michigan."
So I zoomed in on Detroit, and it looked just as ugly & muddy as that picture... wasn't the right spot, but I got a big kick out of it anyhow. *smile*

I found several cities/ rivers that look like that across the world (particularly in India and China), haven't found that one yet, though. Perhaps we could get a continent?

It is not on the Mississippi, neither in India or China. Wrong hemisphere for all three.
Is that hint enough for now?

Ooooh I don't think I've looked in the southern hemisphere at all...

I was looking at a place that looked like that. From further above it looks like delicate flowers the way that they were layed out. =) After the kids go to bed I'll look!
Cool pictures, y'all. =)

Yes, small hint, please.
-
I don't know how specific to get...
Start off big- It's in Asia
-
Is it a historical place?
(Has check pretty much the entire coast, no luck.)
-
I chose this city because it's in a place where you would not expect.
Not sure if that's too cryptic or if it will give it away... probably the former.
-
I don't expect a lot of places :P
Not sure if you can answer it...but did it have anything to do with WWII or play a role? Or is it just a 'personal preference' city of yours?

Hint time
The area around this city was the expected site of one of the bloodiest battle in American history up to that point.

At first I thought it was Pittsburgh, but I was mistaken (Three River Stadium)...

Harrisburg. I thought it was Richmond or Trenton at first.
-
Harrisburg. I thought it was Richmond or Trenton at first.
Got it :aok
I'm about 2 and a half miles East of the American Civil War Museum (building on top of the hill on the right hand side about half way down).
The Pennsylvania State Capitol building is the X-shaped building with the rotunda on it directly up and to the right of the larger baseball field.
Three Mile Island (and its nuclear power plant) is about 10 miles down the river, as is the Harrisburg International Airport.

Crap. That one's too hard. I've still got my eyes hurting from trying to find Klimt's latest from the FW thread.

Looking at it, try somewere in Africa, Mexico, or the area's around the border.

Dam these bahama islands, there's so many that look the same!

:) Reason I picked this particular one was because it was an island I went to on my cruise this summer.
-
Fort William.

Well if I'm looking at the right spot, yes Fort William is it, but that's not the island :P

Have fun, just a random pick, but it somwere in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Oooh a random stretch of European farmland with no distinguishing features, this should be fun. :lol

Luxembourg seems small until you're trying to find an indescript stretch of farmland, eh? :)

Yep I'm thinking the same thing S.A N.T or W.A somewhere around the middle, its the right color anyway.

If you scroll out just a tad, some of those features look awesome, like leafless trees on a sunset background. Who would have thought something so burned looking could also look so awesome?

Mensa found the place.
The village at the center of the pic was called Mainila in 1939.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelling_of_Mainila
An invented smoking gun of that time, a fake justification for starting the Winter War.
Anyone found the city yet? ;)
-
I'm not going to look for the city, since I don't want to do the whole shift downward & pan around to see each city. My attention span sometimes doesn't even last as long as is required just to find the cities from the overhead view. :) But I'll read with interest when someone else finds the city. :)

That was the easiest when I saw your location Blauk.
Helsinki!

He has mentioned recently in one of his posts where he used to live - hint. I'd look for it, but too busy at work this week so far. Ugh.

Thanks for the hint =)
I spent all night scrolling through lists of airports that have RY 7/25 & looking those up on GE... and haven't found it yet. I'll narrow it a bit to search for that area. :D

Yeah those are cool, and different.
Btw that's an awesome countryside around that airport! That's where I'd like to go if I went on a trip to the Eastern Hemisphere.
-
What I'm trying to figure out is how they operate with so many grass landing areas at all these airports (there's so many!). I thought it was damp there all the time? Wouldn't that make the sod soggy?
-
Both of those have 07/25 runways I see texasmom, lol I've been doing the same
-
:) Look at Leeds. There's passenger planes on each side of the 14/32 runway, opposite direction (obviously one moving around to exit... but still cool to look at).
-
As for the grass runways, soggy runways can be a problem. I was doing a little reading on this because I got curious too. I suppose a well built grass runway would be slightly raised, compacted soil, and a well chosen and maintained grass that handle rain waters the best. Or you can just get these:

eye alt?
-
I'm positive that one is on the African continent. So many of the waterways have that same mint-green texture & pattern. Just haven't found it yet, but I'm fixin to give up for the night. :)
Oh, wait, maybe that's not it. Ah, bugger.
-
Ok, it's time for a hint
-
Texas mom is close. How do find out eye alt? The scale at the bottom says 2 miles.
-
Eye alt is in the bottom right corner.
-
He's using google maps to find it, which is fine, works similar to earth. From what I can see, the 2mi scale come out to be about 42 miles eye alt on Google earth. I use both when I'm looking, each has it's own advantage.

Close like it's on the African Continent? Or close like it's on the correct side of the world? Or close like it's on the correct side of the equator???? :D
-

Close like you're looking at the right planet! :neener:
-
Think it starts with an Af, then maybe another A.
-
Thought it was mountains at first, but looks more like a place that gets lots of rain, but rather flat. It is in Africa.
-
woot! how great that I was looking in the right place!
(wait... I looked for a long time & didn't find it. un-woot.)
-

Well txmom.... you've been lookin' fer "land" in all the wrong places... :lol
-
I found the same waterway pattern at Rumphi and Rhumpi (with one across the top, and the two branching out southbound), but the coloring of the outlying vegetation doesn't match. If you're using google maps, and I'm using google earth, are those the same photos taken & displayed on each?

If that's what you found texasmom then it's yours, otherwise I'll post one.
BTW, if you click the far right icon in Google Earth, it'll open up the image in google maps and you can compare
-
:O :lol
No wonder this was difficult.
-
Oops, I'll pay closer attention next time and use earth. :D
-
You can post another one =)
I don't know if that's the one I found or not. =)
-
OK, will do.
By the way, this does look the same on google earth and google maps.
-
That looks like somewhere I'd want to live. Where is it?
(waiting to see if he answers)
-
It's west of London, just north of Fairmile.
Cool picture, that one.
-
This is pretty close to the place that Jayhawk's picture was from.

-
a lot of airfields in England :uhoh
I know! lol I feel like I saw that while looking for another one a few weeks ago, but I know there's no way I'm gonna remember that.
-
When you're looking for airports, float over one location (say, have all of England in your screen). Type airport in the search block ~ it gives indicators at all the airports, so you can just go right to them & look quickly.
Also, leave the word airport in the search block if you're looking at more than one location. Just float to the next place, mouse/click on enter on the search block & it indicates all the new airports you've just searched for. :)
-
We learned a lot on Curlew's airport one didn't we texasmom? :aok
-
Heck yeah, that one was tough. I think I gave up on that one & didn't even look to see where it was at when someone finally answered. I just waited for the next picture. *grin*
-
Well my eyes hurt. It's also tough when you have to stop at every old RAF airfield and read about it. :lol
-
No guesses yet on this airfield close to London?
-
The only thing I can find that even looks close is the old AFB Upper Heyford.
-
You're pretty near to it. :) Those are cool pictures, aren't they?
type airport into the search box once you're in the area. All of the airports should pop up with indicators, that way you don't have to spend all day looking =)
Actually, it may not pop up if you type in airport. I was looking at something near Huntingdon when that particular airfield originally caught my eye.
-
Well now you practically gave it to us.
-
This one shouldn't be too difficult.

I forgot all about this thread! woot!
Back in a few!! :)
That's part of the Big Diomede Island.
I wouldn't know that, except I was talking with someone the other day about whether or not there was ever the supposed "land bridge" across that span... so I peeked up in that area when playing the other board's google earth game. :)
-
Was it my turn to post a picture and I forgot about it?
Hmm... hatching an evil plan... back later...
-
Great thread Txmom, this is much more intresting than my High School geography lessons (way way way way back when) :D
Thx for the bump
<S>
Mbailey
-
If you want to post one mbailey, you're welcome to. I got that last picture and was supposed to post the next one, but forgot. I don't have enough time to post one for the next few days. :) I was gonna post the same picture from the FW thread, let y'all get it right, then go post the right answer over there, but decided not to. :D
Anyhow, mbailey, you're welcome to post a pic for us. :)

OK here we go
Near here is one of the longest free flowing rivers in North America; also in this same general area one of the last true battles of the civil war took place in early April 1865. Taken from about 15 miles up.
UPDATE:
The picture is oriented along the north south axis and is located in the Southeastern US. The river in the photo is one of the major rivers in the region and it is not the Mississippi River.

How in the heck did you get that one? TxMom? Nevermind just being rhetorical there.
BTW your image is the old city in Jerusalem and more specifically just north of the old temple area.

The left fortress was built by Danes in 1256, but was since improved vastly by Sweden up throgh 17th Century. The right fortress is built in 1492.
Although these fortresses have seen many wars, the one I was referring to was World War 2, where both were heavily damaged, but since restored.

Yes it is in Germany...that should narrow it down some.
OK to narrow it down even more...This town and brewery was relatively untouched by allied bombing raids during WW2 unlike many other breweries. Also its in the western part of Germany.
-
321, you don't have to have google earth to look these up.
You can use googlemaps. Some of their color variations are a little bit different, but it's mostly the same.
Go to google, select maps from their top task bar.
Once the map comes up, select satellite from the task bar that sits just under the top border of the map itself. :)
-
Reschke, your picture is of Warstein, Germany... what's the brewery's slogan?
This one is also in Germany. The architect that designed the spot here was Albert Speer. I've got a few "up yours!" stories that I'll post after someone gets this one. :)

Okay, I'm impatient. Here's my up-yours stories:
I played high school soccer here (including all the spitting that comes with it), and learned how to drive here.
That's my favorite up-yours ever. Take that, you big jerk.
-
Along the main wall on the north side (next to the road), folks used to line up there along the entirety of the wall and practice one-man tennis. Good for them to finally make good use of that spot.

I will look for a picture when I get up from my day of sleep. This zombie shift stuff gets old.
I wonder how the sunrises/sunsets look from that altitude

Yep. Anyone notice the aircraft carrier at dock?
I do now and I was thinking it was that area but never could quite put my finger on it. Also there are two floating dry docks just north of the aircraft carrier (which from the photo looks to be in a sad state of upkeep); one of them has a sub in it and the other has a bunch of rusted junk including what looks like a destroyer or coastal patrol ship of some type.

I'm thinking one of the parks in Sao Paulo. Still looking around the city.
Edit: Is that taken with standard North = up orientation?

I will give you this much....its in the top 30 according to this list.

Ah, got it. Sao Paulo was my first guess, Mexico City was my second. Castillo de Chapultepec. Wasn't quite due north, but close. :)
I'll post one once I get home on Google Earth. (on google maps at work...productive afternoon! :devil )

Wow, that is cruel. Two small farm towns with what appears to be a railroad running through both, and a single airstrip. A creek runs north of one of them, which apparently has a point of interest in it. (flag?) Are there any major landmarks others see here that I'm missing?
The farmland (what I usually use to recognize shots like this) is too neatly sectioned off into squares to be just about anywhere in Europe except Netherlands, but a lack of canals (plus too many lighter hues + large plot sizes) makes me lean away from a dutch area. I'm guessing this is US or Canada. If I had to pin it to a region, I'd say upper Midwest -- Iowa or southern Minnesota area. I could be way off. Anyone know where Rondar is from? :)
-
Obviously a well watered region but lacking the small ponds that dot the landscape of the Eastern Dakotas and Western Minnesota. I am leaning towards somewhere in either Iowa or Kansas...not sure why just have that feeling.
-
Its in the United States. In fact I live 5 miles south of the bigger town, my house is not visible in the pic.
As an afterthought, the region where I live there is no landmarks, trees, hills, mountains or major cities. Gotta drive well over an hour just to get a McSandwich or a WallyWorld business.
-
Shot in the dark, central Illinois?
-
Rondar's picture is of Tribune, Kansas.
(cooking dinner, but will post one soon!)

Isla Nublar or Isla Sorna..... Dino hunt anyone?

That's in Armstrong County, Texas. I don't actually see any cities though? It's SE of Amarillo.
-
Are we supposed to have a city in it? I wasnt sure. You are right on location.... it was the geological feature I was posting.
-
Nope, it doesn't have to have a city in it. I just use the cities as the reference point when answering. :)
Keeps me from having to do the lat-longs or anything like that :)
This one is in Texas. I hope I already didn't post this one - I've got it tabbed off in google earth, since I was interested in the little red & green pools there.
-
Hint: It's in the Western half of Texas (which is probably already apparent from the landscape).
-
Well I am going to rule out the area around Midland and Odessa. Its gotta be more south and west than there due to the landscape that is visible. It also doesn't look like anything around Lubbock either.
-
Whats your Alt?
-
Sorry for the delay! And I'm so sorry for the horribly pinpointed picture! I didn't realize how tiny it was until you asked me for alt. (about 5000 ft.)
Yes, I'd say SW is entirely accurate.
Here's the same picture from about 100 miles up.

Staying in the Northern Hemisphere and it isn't in North America
(http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab119/willnic/GoogleEarthGame9.jpg)
-
What a dummy. I didn't read your "staying in northern hemisphere" remark until AFTER I'd been looking in the southern hemisphere for an hour.
-
Its been so long since I looked at that I don't remember where I found that place. Might have to take a look at google earth again tomorrow.
-
(or you can post a new one, so you don't have to try to find the old answer!)
-
I did half of japan and got over it, thats where i think it is, the track and baseball field as well as the rivers are why i think so
-
I bet you're in the right area.
I didn't notice before that there's no compass rose on the picture, either - I was only looking on the eastern side of everything assuming that north was up in the picture.
-
I doubt very much it's Japan. Japanese streets are not so parallel because of no right of eminent domain. No dirt oval tracks either.
-
You were right Rolex - not Japan.
It's Matanzas, Cuba.
My little one was the one today who recommended I look at the Cuba/Haiti area... so when he's done working on the truck with his Pops I'll ask him to come in & pick another one.
-
Northern hemisphere, from about 50 miles up.
