I'd rather have people driving extra slow in the snow and ice than as if nothing is there.

High school and college girls driving while talking on their cell phones are the most dangerous people on the roads.

what is your biggest pet peeve???

That's stuff just always happens. You always get behind a slow car when you're in a hurry, and when you're out just for a drive you know there's someone behind you in a hurry.  :D

Something that drives me nuts is when someone says "This is true". You're in a conversation and they say something, you reply "Ya, but ***********", and they say "This is true" instead of "Oh ya" or "That's true". Saying "This is true" sounds like they're holding the statement in their hands like a pet dog saying "Hi! This is true, my new pet statement!"

Don't know why that bugs me but it does.

What really gets me is when I'm driving down the road, minding my own business, and some person who thinks they own the highway system comes up behind me and rides my ass.

You see, I'm a fairly organized person who takes responsibility for my time and am not always running late to my next appointment. Sometimes I may drive 5 or 10 under the limit, because its safer, uses less gas, and in general is just more relaxing.

I've been involved in 2 serious car crashes that each almost killed me, neither was my fault. My worst nightmare is dying in a car crash, a big hot twisting heap of metal skidding along asphalt. And the thing that pisses me off the most is someone putting MY life in danger because their inability to plan their day and manage their time.

If you start doing some math you'll finding speeding just 5-10mph is simply not worth it. It doesn't save very much time at all over short distances, it uses significantly more gas, and it puts you and everyone else on the road at an increased level of danger.

So yea....  SLOW DOWN! When I see people coming up from behind fast and ride my ass, guess what I do. Slow down even more

My biggest pet peeve has nothing to do with driving. (usually) I can't STAND it when I'm told to do something that I'm already in the midst of doing.  Particularly if it is done in a nasty tone.

I don't mid people driving 5-10 mph under the speed limit on a 2-lane rd, I have about 540hp... as soon as an opportunity presents they're a little speck in the rear view mirror. The people I have a problem with are the dolts who drive 5-10 mph below the speed limit in the LEFT HAND LANE on a 4-lane road, most of the time at the exact same speed as the car in the right hand lane that is too close to them for an overtaking car to negotiate a pass. The left lane is for PASSING, not CRUISING. We even have signs here in SC that read "slower traffic keep right" to let people know not to take up residence int he left lane. Unfortunately many can't read and the ones that can likely don't care.

At least I do know one cop who pulls people over regualrly and writes tickets to left-lane campers for "Impeding the flow of traffic."

I can't stand being TOLD to do something. I don't mind being ASKED to do stuff, I'll do it if someone asks nicely instead of telling me to do it ("Could you take the garbage out?" "Can you pick me up at 10 o'clock?" Rather than "Hey, take the garbage out!" or "Pick me up at 10, ok.") It's my life, why should I live it according to how others think I should live it?  Have fun at life, don't worry what others think of the way you're living your life!

I also can't stand routines. It's gets really boring and annoying doing the same things over and over again in the same order all the time. Almost makes you feel like a robot. I like trying new stuff, staying out of routines, just doing what I like and having fun. (Maybe that's why I was terrible at school, it combines both routine and being ordered around into 1 situation. Always getting up at 6AM, breakfast, shower, get on the bus, told how what to wear, what to say, what to eat, back on the bus at 3PM, doing this every day of every week from August to June)

People who drag their heels when they walk.

I really don't see how people can even walk like that. It seems like it would be harder than walking normally. Do they purposely make sure their heels drag each step??  :huh

I'm at a light at a four way intersection turning left. Single lanes. The person across the intersection is turning left also. The person coming up behind me and the persom coming up behind the guy across the intersection pass on the right using the shoulder of the road as a lane to roar past and keep us guys turning left from making our turns and clearing the intersection.

I also don't like it when people just sit in their chair sniffing up their loogies rather than getting up and blowing their nose.

what about those of us that drive faster, because we actually enjoy it, and can easily handle it?

and yes, 10mph over the posted limit on the freeway makes almost a 20 minute time saving on my commute from mcguire to home(about 30 or so miles away)

gas savings? my minivan and my dakota both show higher fuel mileage at 75mph, than they do at 55mph.

This is just like the illogical argument that people shouldn't wear their seatbelts because you or someone you know got in an accident and lived because they didn't have it on (yes people actually argue this). Sure there are exceptions to everything, but you need to look at the big picture (http://roadsafety.wordpress.com/2008/09/07/a-few-sober-notes-on-speed-and-accidents/) to really make an informed decision.

Quote
what about those of us that drive faster, because we actually enjoy it, and can easily handle it?

Great, I like it too, but there is a time and place. Do it at the race track or auto cross circuit, not the open road putting other peoples life in danger. I don't care how good of a driver you think you are, your car becomes more dangerous and harder to control the faster you go, there is no arguing that, no matter what you think you can 'handle'.

Quote
10mph over the posted limit on the freeway makes almost a 20 minute time saving on my commute from mcguire to home(about 30 or so miles away)

Now this is just getting silly. Lets do some simple math now (because obviously you didn't). 30 mile drive on a highway, lets assume posted limit is 65 mph. If you drive the limit it will take you 27 minutes 41 seconds to get home. If you drive 10 mph over the limit, it will take you 24 minutes to get home, with a net savings of 3 minutes and 41 seconds. Where the heck do you get 20 minutes?  :lol

Quote
gas savings? my minivan and my dakota both show higher fuel mileage at 75mph, than they do at 55mph.

Your vehicles must be different than every other vehicle on the road then, or your just making stuff up like the 20 minutes saved comment.

Most vehicles have the highest fuel economy around 45-55 mph. Aerodynamic drag increases with the cube of speed. From a scientific study, "All cars demonstrated decreasing fuel economy beyond 65 mph (105 km/h), with wind resistance the dominant factor, and may save up to 25% by slowing from 70 mph (110 km/h) to 55 mph (89 km/h)."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_automobiles

So yea, basically all of your things you say about going faster are false. If you want to be safer, save gas, and have a less stressful drive, just go slower (and maybe leave 5 minutes earlier, gee who ever thought of that!).

I agree with this 100%. I think most people simply don't know/understand. In the majority of cases on a 4 lane road you should always be in the right lane, even if your going fast, and only use the left lane for passing. This should be taught in drivers ed courses because obviously a lot of people are not understanding the concept.

People who drive UNDER the speed limit and then do not move over to the shoulder for faster traffic to get around them are by far one of the biggest hazards on the road.

They are apparently of the mind set that everyone behind them should also go slow, and have no business passing them.. they want to go slow, so everyone else can just eat it.

so of course people.. normal drivers.. any and everyone, are forced to either doddle along behind this jerkoff who could easly move over onto the shoulder and let them pass..  Or try to get around them, because believe it or not, they actually want to get where they are going at some point before the apocalypse.

on single lane highways (1 lane in each direction 55 to 70 speed limit) belligerent slow drivers who wont move over are probably right under drunk drivers as far as the amount of danger they bring to the road.

Oh, and when ya finally get around them, they tailgate you.. because you have been following them close for a while, trying to drive home the "move over I need to pass" point...  they are blocking traffic, you are just trying to move along at the posted speed.. but suddenly you are the assho!e.

If I understand this correctly, if someone is driving 50 in a 55 zone they should pull off onto the side of the road and stop to let others go around them?

i don't know how to do the multiple quotes...so i'll do it this way. i actually DID know a guy that would've died with his seatbelt on......he lost control of his car in the rain, and hit a tree, with his drivers door......they said that had he been belted in, he'd have been dead.

that being said, i always wear my seatbelt.....not because it's a law, but rather because i know better(from racing).it's also why i didn't get FUBAR'd in either the flip over, or the head on....

Great, I like it too, but there is a time and place. Do it at the race track or auto cross circuit, not the open road putting other peoples life in danger. I don't care how good of a driver you think you are, your car becomes more dangerous and harder to control the faster you go, there is no arguing that, no matter what you think you can 'handle'. by "faster", i'm not talking about doing 100mph down the interstate......i generally do between 70 and 80mph on the local freeways around here. on other roads(except where there's known speed traps) i do anywhere from 5mph to 15mph over the posted limit. i adjust these speeds according to the weather conditions, and i slow down a LOT if i feel tired.

yes, i realize that a car is harder to control at higher speeds. this is why i slow down when i feel tired.  i generally also know how far i can push my car.

:lolpart of my trip home is back roads. part is on the freeway. i don't need to do math, when i can look at my watch, seeing i'm home 20 minutes earlier than i am when i'm at the speed limit. where i did mis-state myself there, is that i(as mentioned earlier)cruise between 70 and 80mph. that late at night, i keep it to 70....most of the way on the freeway,  the posted limit is 55. some of the back roads are posted at 35, with no homes, no driveways, no blind intercections......so i'm generally between 45and 55 on these roads.

Your vehicles must be different than every other vehicle on the road then, or your just making stuff up like the 20 minutes saved comment.  :rolleyes:in all honesty, i go by the "flight computer" in the console. the dakota on level straight freeway, at 75 shows 19. at 65 it shows 17. at 55, it varies between 16 and 17. at 35 to 45, it shows well over 22.
the minivan, i've never done 55 on the freeway long enough to get an accurate reading. it shows about 26 to 28 at 75, but at 80, it does drop considerably.

Most vehicles have the highest fuel economy around 45-55 mph. Aerodynamic drag increases with the cube of speed. From a scientific study, "All cars demonstrated decreasing fuel economy beyond 65 mph (105 km/h), with wind resistance the dominant factor, and may save up to 25% by slowing from 70 mph (110 km/h) to 55 mph (89 km/h)."tried that in the dakota, and it didn;t save me anything.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_automobiles

So yea, basically all of your things you say about going faster are false. If you want to be safer, save gas, and have a less stressful drive, just go slower (and maybe leave 5 minutes earlier, gee who ever thought of that!). i leave in plenty of time to get where i'm going when i want to be there, regardless of my driving fast or slow. i spend a lot of time behind incompetent people. by this i mean the aformentioned drivers that panic at the slightest sign of rain, or snow(and south nj is chock full of them).    then there are the competent ones that just drive slow.........and on a two lane road, they drive side by side(which is illegal as the one on the left isn't passing)

my drives are totally stress free, when i can drive freely. when i have the guy that actually STOPS at the bottom of an on ramp to the freeway, when he should be at highway speed, and merging, THAT makes things stressful.

akhog, i never said i was in a hurry, i just have a need for speed and believe me i waited for the next safe moment and passed the person that was drivin like it was sunday with no problem. just cuz i go over the speed limit 5mph (btw i have never gotten a speeding ticket and have had my license since i was 16) does NOT mean i can NOT control my car. my daily drive was a 2001 GMC sierra 1 ton dually with 8.1 liter BB in it, and my fun truck to drive was a 91 GMC sonoma with a 454 BB in it with 350 turbo trans and B&M shift kit in it. i drove the same in them as i do my pontiac grand prix. im cautious when im drivin but it does not mean that i can't do a lousy 5 mph over the speed limit and still not be a safe driver.

i have to agree with yall bout the left lane is the fast lane! that drives me nuts also!!!! or them truck drivers that are goin 1 mph faster than the other truck and decide to pass them and it takes them 100 miles just to accomplish their goal! wth is up with that!!!!!

If I understand this correctly, if someone is driving 50 in a 55 zone they should pull off onto the side of the road and stop to let others go around them?

most roads with speed limits that high have what is called an "improved shoulder"  I.E. a shoulder almost as wide as a regular lane. the guy going slow can maintain his speed, but just move over on to the shoulder and let the other cars pass, instead of forcing them to go into oncoming traffic to get around him.

On a side note, nothing would bring me more joy than put in "drive right" law..   which states on multi lane roads and highways that the left lane is for passing only.. if you just cruise in the left lane.. you get a ticket.  You drive in the right lane(s), pass on the left, period.    It endlessly irks me when 1 car is going slow in the right lane, and the guy behind him gets in the left lane..  but doesn't pass..  he just cruises about a car length behind the other guy like he is doing some sort of formation driving.. instant rolling road block.

Sigh...

I still cant get over the "the-road-is-mine" types in this thread, in fact its almost sad. Some of you complain that slow drivers are the problem, you couldn't be more wrong. Its the speed demons that are really at fault, plain and simple. Guess what, that slow poke on the road ahead of you is only dangerous when you decide to make them so! One poster mentioned someone using the shoulder to allow a driver to pass, give me a freaking break! Have you ever stopped to see whats on an "improved shoulder"? It ain't pretty, as a matter of fact I feel a tire patch coming on just thinking about it. Not to mention using the break down lane for that purpose is probably illegal. I will say it again, "I own the road" types are my biggest pet peeve, bar none. They are probably the same ones that whine when someone doesn't fly to their satisfaction!

This coming from some one who drove 171 mph on the drag strip tonight and drove the over speed limit on the way home. Yeah I speed, but when gramps gets on the road and does the speed limit I don't piss and moan about either. I either go around or enjoy the freaking scenery and wish I was back on the drag strip with 900hp at my toes.

And the lady who sits in front of me in class who talks a lot but doesn't really say anything.

Something like that the entire class after almost every statement the professor makes. Drives me crazy, almost so much so I am tempted to say something.

Sorry, I'm gonna bite, as one of my pet peeves is slow drivers. Keep in mind, we aren't saying what speed you ARE driving. On an open four lane road in nice conditions with no stop lights or other obstructions, is 45mph an unreasonable speed to expect to drive? After all, add one more lane and a median, and you would expect the speed limit to be in the 50s. What if you live in Hawaii where this road has a speed limit of 25mph? Are you gonna do 15 just to be sure?

Yes, a man tearing down the road at 90+ is unsafe in most conditions. However, there are many, many conditions in which our speeds can be exceeded safely. Rather than wikipedia, all I have to cite to prove my point is the Autobahn. No, not every road is like that, but it is one of many cases in which higher speeds can be safely achieved.

Another pet peeve is intentionally improper grammar/English. Some aren't perfect, that's fine, but when you go out of your way to butcher the language...

I build custom cars and also work as a mechanic and it really aggravates the piss outta me when they like to stand behind and watch what your doing. Then you get some that like to chat while your working so you really can't concentrate on what your doing. When this happens i usually stop whatever im doing and go get a cup of coffee, go drop a hot one, or start chatting on my phone til they get the picture that i dont want them hovering over me while im working. I even asked someone once if when they work do people stand over his shoulder and watch him work

THAT i think is why some(most) of our speed limits are set so low. they cater to the lowest common denominator........and......w ell......as you more than likely know, there is an abundance of incompetent drivers in the us. we have more than our fair share right here in jersey. like the ones that stop when merging the freeway. the ones that will not pull onto a road, till there is nothing moving. the ones that go into panic mode because there's a drop of rain on their windshield.
thus, those of us that are quite capable, and take the time to learn the capabilities of our vehicles(i truly believe a good 90% of drivers have no clue what their vehicles can/can't do) get to suffer.

then there's the traffic lights ya get stuck at, because you got stuck behind the slow guy.....

I don't care how good of a driver you think you are, your car becomes more dangerous and harder to control the faster you go, there is no arguing that, no matter what you think you can 'handle'.

Absolutely, 100% false.

The basic fundamentals of car control do not appreciably change with speed unless speed is high enough for aerodynamics to overrule mechanical grip.  This isn't happening on any road car or weekend race car.

You can spin at 25mph or 125mph.  The speed makes no difference and the catalysts are the same.

Your point of view is a perfect example of why we need *proper* drivers education in this country.  Speed, in and of itself, is not what is dangerous.  Rather, it is the speed differential between two objects that is dangerous.

Stay in the right lane, if you would, so we can avoid that physics lesson.  The law is in place for a reason.  Shame its not enforced.

There is really no point in arguing with someone who doesn't understand basic physics, so I'm not going to. If you really believe what you wrote I suggest you go read some books.

BTW, I'm not a little old lady who never drives fast. I raced autocross for years in BMW 2002s and even did some rally racing when I lived in the south west. I know a thing or two about driving fast. There is a place and a time, and its not when you are on the road with other people, period.

Also my dad was a highway patrolman for the Texas DPS, and I helped my uncle with the volunteer fire fighters, so I've seen plenty of car accidents. In the area of Texas I'm from (big open roads), 2nd only to drunk driving, the largest cause of fatalities on the road was people speeding and loosing control of their car.

The real problem is people don't have respect for what a vehicle can do. Try being a first responder to some of these crashes, where you come up to half a body, laying on the cold asphalt grasping for air and begging for you to help, but all you can do is watch them die. THEN tell me speeding is harmless.

So now that you have been proven wrong with the most basic math, you are backpedaling. Very typical. But you are still full of 'it'.

Lets take your latest 'story'. You say you go 70 in a 55 part of the way, and an average of 50 in a 35 part of the way. Lets assume 75% is highway and 25% is back roads on your 30 mile drive (22.5 and 7.5 miles respectively).

Scenario A: you drive the speed limit. It takes you 24:32 to drive the highway and 12:51 for the back roads, total 37:23.

Scenario B: you speed according to what you said above. It takes you 19:17 on the highway, and 9 on the back road, total 28:17.

Difference: 9 minutes 16 seconds, still less than half of what you claim.

Also if you claim you drive an average of 15mph over, that means at some times you must drive much faster than that to make up for the times you are forced to drive slower than 15 over or even *gasp* at the speed limit. That means to save 9 minutes you must average 15 over and probably go up to 25 or more over at some points in the drive.

Also since you now admit you drive on back roads for part of the drive there is no doubt time spent at stop lights and signs. This means the little time you save speeding is even less of a percentage of the total time you spend driving.

People who drive UNDER the speed limit and then do not move over to the shoulder for faster traffic to get around them are by far one of the biggest hazards on the road.
This argument is just illogical. Its not the people going slow that cause accidents, it's the impatient people behind them trying to 'make a move', speed, and break the law that cause them.

It's this attitude that the road is mine and YOU are in the way that causes most accidents. Just remember, in the USA driving is not a right, it's a privilege, and just like other privileges, it can easily be taken away.

i love people like you.

you assume i have to backpedal for anything.

when i get home at about 2am driving at the lower speeds, and suddenly, and mysteriously manage to get home at 1:40am driving at the higher speeds......well........i dunno what to tell ya.,

try taking into account traffic lights, traffic itself(what little there is at those hours), etc.

well, i dunno about needing a new watch either. it seems to agree with the clock in my cellphone, my gs, and in the dash of my van. think they're all wrong too? :D

trying to figure everything out your way works perfectly with no variables.........

and the faster driving helps me NOT get caught at some(most) of the traffic lights. this is a little different on rt 30 though.....they're timed for 40 mph.........so i do 40, although the limit is 45....and in so doing, and not having to stop, that saves me a couple more minutes.  :aok

There is no point in arguing with you. You say one thing but the facts that you provided (and then changed) show something entirely different.

Oh well, in reality like most people you will probably continue speeding and getting away with it, and never realize the increased level of risk you were exposing yourself and others (unwillingly) to, compared to the relatively insignificant time savings.

Nonsense, people are on the road because they have to get somewhere, not because they feel like driving.

If YOU (by driving slow) force them to travel less than the posted speed, and will not allow them to pass, YOU are the problem, they are not trying to break the law, they are trying to abide by and and get where they are going in a timely manner.. YOU, being arrogant and inconsiderate, decide that you want to drive slower than the posted speed, and also decide not to take into consideration the other drivers who DO wish to travel at the posted speed, so YOU force them to have 2 choices, stay stuck behind you, or face the hazard of trying to pass you..  neither is desireable, but YOU have put them in this situation.

all YOU have to do, is move over for about 10 seconds, and let them pass.. that's it..  but your an arrogant inconsiderate driver, so you just ignore everyone else on YOUR road and let the traffic stack up behind you.

Bottom line, the person passing you is doing nothing wrong, you move ove they go around you and continue on their way, no effect on you whatsoever.   but NOOOOOO instead you just sit there with them stuck behind you, because you are somehow BETTER than they are, and if you wanna drive slow, will thats just tough cookies for everyone else on the road.. not your problem..  amazinhunk.

On topic:  Pet Peeve, things to annoy me, are two things:  People who "race" me, I don't want to race anyone but it seems like since I drive a nice car-ish (Scion tC) people (male teens) insist on trying to out-run me.  I never play the game sine I know better...we have cops everywhere in this city.  But there are people who drive little "supped-up" cars around here who think everyone needs to race them so they can "win" and get an ego boost or something.  Sad thing is if I wanted to be stupid and race I would likely win, the idiots don't even have good cars.  I do speed (max of 5mph over unless I'm on country-roads) and accelerate fast-ish, but still...
The other thing is people who get right on my tail at a light when we're on a hill.  I drive a manual so I am going to, naturally, drift back some before going forwards and when then sit 3" off my tail it's very disconcerting (right word?).

the accident where blah blah blah

Yes, very typical argument based on a small cross section of data. Read my comment above about people arguing to NOT wear a seat belt because of a few accidents. Your argument like theirs is illogical and incorrect, speeding causes more accidents and every real scientific study out there backs that up.

Completely illogical again, your two statements contradict eachother. Of course its the drivers ability to handle the speed that is the problem, but thats because the vehicle becomes more difficult to control with increased speed. Why do you think professional race car drivers crash? Do you think there would be as many crashes in races if they had 55 mph limiters on the cars?

Meh, guess I'm just waisting my time with this one.  :bolt:

Wow, road rage much? Talk about making this personal.

First of all I never said I drive way under the limit, I usually go right at the limit +/- 5mph*, because at least where I live the posted limits seem very logical and appropriate for the road (they even change them with the seasons). If you would take time to read what I wrote, you'd see that I actually agree with you in one regard, that people driving way under the limit and in the left lane or otherwise not allowing other people to pass are a problem. However they are just one part of the problem, and its people who rage up and make dangerous passes that are the main contributing factor.

But its your attitude that "YOU are the problem" that is so typical and really is the actual problem. You are unwilling to take a step back and look at the big picture and admit that you possibly may be the one taking the elevated risk or at least contributing to the situation.

*I see the problem every day I drive the front end loader, during which I am going very slow, and includes going down a highway and over a bridge. The highway is 2 lane with a very wide shoulder that I normally am mostly or completely in, but the bridge is a skinny 2 lane with no shoulder. I'm going 30 in a 55 for miles with passing lanes, but people can't wait to get around me on the 1/4 mile long bridge. They will actually pass in traffic on a skinny bridge because they are in such a hurry, sometimes cutting it REALLY close. I'm sure the whole time they are saying, "damn YOU get off MY road". Of course I'm the one going to plow out all the snow so they can actually get to work.

Wingnutt,

Its called a speed limit, there is no law that says traveling the speed limit is required. Even on the interstate the minimum speed required is 40mph in Florida per this statue.

Quote
Minimum Speed Limit:
I. No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic. §316.183(5)
II. The minimum speed limit on Interstate and Defense Highways, with at lest 4 lanes, is 40 MPH. §316.183(2)
III. A person, driving at less than the normal speed of traffic, shall drive in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. §316.081(2)

On a two lane road expecting someone to pull over is absolutely ludicrous, and probably illegal. Given the 40mph-70mph example I would say traveling 10-15 mph under a normal 55mph speed limit is well within the law. Face it the only time a slow driver presents a danger is when you force the issue. Attitudes like this are what make the road in America so dangerous, not slow drivers. Seems to me the only arrogant and inconsiderate types are the ones with attitudes like yours.

A slow driver going down the road is no danger until the issue is forced by an impatient one.

I drive a manual so I am going to, naturally, drift back some before going forwards and when then sit 3" off my tail it's very disconcerting (right word?).

know what's fun? next time you get one doing this......set up as if you're gonna run him. when the light turns, just "blp" the throttle. then watch him take off like a bat outta helll, and make an arse out of himself.  :devil

Meh, guess I'm just waisting my time with this one.  :bolt:

if YOU look up further, you'd see that i agreed with ya on the seatbelt issue.

todays cars will easily handle 80mph speeds.,,,,well....most of em. it's not like you're driving a 55 lincoln land yacht, wallowing over every dip in the road.

all it takes is more attention on the part of the driver. something most aren't doing, as they're to busy doing their makeup, texting, reading, etc.

when ya drive faster, ya just plan further ahead...........

You are completely missing the point. If you can understand the seatbelt argument, and how some people really think its generally safer to go without them because of a few experiences, then simply apply that logic to what you are saying. Just because you've been in a few accidents that didn't involve speeding does NOT mean driving faster is not more dangerous.

When you make generalizations like "most cars can handle 80" it again shows you are completely missing the point of the argument. I know what the cars are capable of, but its a simple fact that going faster does significantly increase the risk. Thats because while the coeffiecent of friction basically stays constant, the kinetic energy of the vehicle increases exponentially with speed. That means increasing 10mph from 20-30 does not have nearly the same effect as going from 50-60. Thats also why even with many modern advances in vehicle safety and handling the speed limits have stayed almost the same for several decades.

The point is most speeders don't realize two things: First, that they really aren't saving as much time as they think they are by speeding (as illustrated by your very own posts). And second, that they don't realize the elevated risk they are putting themselves and everyone around them at by just going faster, no matter how good of a driver they are (or think they are).

Just for the record before I get any more angry replies or PMs, I'm not bagging on the person that occasionally goes a few mph over the limit. Its the dangerous attitude that the 'road is mine and YOU are in the way', and the attitude that the speed limit is there for other people who can't drive as well, that are the real problems, and both very obvious in this thread.

There is really no point in arguing with someone who doesn't understand basic physics, so I'm not going to. If you really believe what you wrote I suggest you go read some books.

I understand basic physics just fine.  If you run into a brick wall with your car at 1mph, the energy of the impact is no different than hitting a vehicle going 65mph when you are traveling 66mph.

Again, speed, in and of itself, is not the issue.  Speed differential is.

Quote
BTW, I'm not a little old lady who never drives fast. I raced autocross for years in BMW 2002s and even did some rally racing when I lived in the south west. I know a thing or two about driving fast. There is a place and a time, and its not when you are on the road with other people, period.

I don't think anyone is claiming you are old, female or slow.  The BMW 2002 is a great car; I'd love to have one.  Personally, I'm a big fan of the E46 chassis; especially those of the S54-powered variety.  Since you have track experience, I am surprised by your position.

I have plenty of track time as well.  All road course; 80% of it in rear-engined cars.  I don't require a book to tell me what is going to happen if I exceed the limit of adhesion.  I've exceeded it on more than one occasion; the line between trail braking and snap oversteer being rather thin in a car boasting a 40/60 weight distribution.

Quote
...2nd only to drunk driving, the largest cause of fatalities on the road was people speeding and loosing control of their car.

Speed is not what causes injury.  The difference between walking away from a collision and becoming a statistic is, again, speed differential.  Injury is sustained when forward momentum is abruptly altered or stopped, entirely.

Quote
The real problem is people don't have respect for what a vehicle can do. Try being a first responder to some of these crashes, where you come up to half a body, laying on the cold asphalt grasping for air and begging for you to help, but all you can do is watch them die. THEN tell me speeding is harmless.

See above.

In concert with your point of view; please don't misunderstand me.  I agree 100% that public roads are *not* the place to be playing boy-racer or competing in the Stoplight GT.  As you stated, "keep it on the track."

By the same token; I would suggest that an overwhelming majority of drivers on US roads have absolute no clue how to drive.  If you have track experience; especially on rally circuits; you understand.  I would expect you to agree with my opinion.

Accidents like those you are describing are horrible things, no doubt, but they are not the result of "speeding."  They are the result of driver ignorance.  Ignorance both of their vehicle's capabilities and their own.

That ignorance is to be expected when we place more emphasis on teaching little Johnny to parallel park instead of recover on a wet skid pad.

In Finland, if memory serves, it takes about three years to get a full drivers license and exhaustive lessons in car control.

Here?  Takes about five minutes.  Know what a stop sign is?  Check.  Slow down in preparation for a stop when confronted with a yellow light?  Check.  Put your seat belt on?  Check.

That last one is the most important part of our drivers education program because with the amount of training 16 year old's get in this country, that seat belt is probably going to be needed.

You appear to have plenty of experience with the result of this ignorance.  The solution is to fix the training, not vilify "speeding" as the be-all, end-all cause of automotive-related fatalities.

@Saurdaukar, I suspect we mostly agree but are just looking at things differently.

About the physics, your original comment really sounds like you were saying there is no difference in the way a car handles going 15 or 50 mph. Speed "differential" aside, the one going 50 has a lot more kinetic energy in one direction, that means everything is going to take longer including turning or stopping. Since the kinetic energy increases with the square of the speed, these negative effects increase exponentially with speed.

You say speed differential is the problem. Well the majority of speeding accidents in rural areas are one vehicle accidents, differential is irrelevant. Also consider driving on a highway in traffic. If everyone goes 20 mph faster, the differential is the same, but the overall risk is still increased significantly.

If anything my little amount of track experience has taught me to appreciate the risks we take in vehicles even more. Also like I've said, after the things that I have seen the *LAST* way I want to die is in a car accident. Those experiences alone have really gotten me to slow way down and drive more carefully, constantly on the lookout for the people who are not.

Actually, you are wrong.  A one mile per hour collision between a brick wall and a car and a one mile per hour collision between two cars (assuming they have the same weight and bumper height)would yield significantly different results.

Gotta agree, ESPECIALLY on driver's education. My teacher preached fear. "If you exceed 15 mph, it WILL kill you!" "If you drive a car, you are going to DIE!" "Cars ARE LETHAL DEATH TRAPS!!!" She basically made kids shivering chihuahuas whenever they got anywhere near a car. Having grown up with my father being a skilled but fast driver, I had no fear of vehicles in and of themselves, and she hated me because she could never instill that fear in me. A vehicle is not inherently dangerous. The driver of the vehicle determines whether or not it is dangerous. Classroom lessons in fear replaced practical education, and almost no mind was paid to recovery from an unsafe situation, because we we're programmed to be so terrified of driving we would "NEVER find ourselves in an adverse condition!". The end result of this? With no education in skid recovery, I find myself in an adverse situation one day. I was not speeding or driving recklessly. I was coming through a rather sharp turn when the guy in front of me decides to turn off the road without signaling, and to do so, slams on his brakes. Behind him, I have to slam on mine too, and the combination of the grade of the road, the low quality of the tread on my tires, and several other unenviable factors, I wind up in a skid. A particularly nasty skid. With no knowledge of what to properly do, the best I can do is run with my instinct and try to regain control. I manage to avoid hitting the car in front of me, or the oncoming traffic in the other lane, but it was NOT a nice situation, and something I would CERTAINLY want to be taught about in advance.

My first one well before Scuzzy can do it I will
See rule 14

But my second one is, When someone who has no clue about your profession, wants to tell you how to do your job, or make comments about how it looks when you are not finished.  Where does some Hewlett Packard Pilot get the Cajones to tell me or anyone else how to Push dirt, run electrical, do plumbing, or any other job that requires skill.  I don't go to their office and tell them how to file their fragging reports, or manage their Itunes, or look up the price of rice in China.  So stay off of my construction site, away from my dirt and my 57000 pound Motorgrader, or my 110 ton dozer, before I back over your uncalloused handed little body and have to fill out a 7 page accident report, and have OSHA breathing down my throat for the next 6 months.  If you tell me how to do my job then you need to be back in your office, behind your computer, it is safer for you to be away from my big boy toys, and away from me.

Thus endth my sermon, Hey ya'll asked.

And spell checks that don't have "ya'll"  even though it is propper grammar in Texas. :bolt:

But what is more likely a 10 mph collision. Against a stationary brick wall, again probably not a big deal. A 10 mph collision at highway speeds, and you have out of control cars rolling over and smashing into things.

The other thing is the Iron Curtain. When you get 3 little old ladies driving land barge Buicks line abreast on Loop 410. Normally not a problem, except when they do it at 40 mph. Normal speed on 410 is about 70 mph and when you come around some of the turns (specially near the spaghetti bowl) you just hope the guy behind you is paying attention too.

People in front of me in cars driving while talking on the cell phone. Trust me. Most of you cannot multitask in that capacity nearly as well as you think you can.

Stores that neglect to mark the prices on their items. I've been known to seek out the store manager. Ask him how much an item costs. then tell him "Fine. When you mark it. I'll buy it. But right now Im going to go buy it somewhere else"

People who take their half of the grocery isle out of the middle of the isle so nobody can pass on either side.

Oh that reminds me of two more.

People who learned all sorts of big complicated and for the most part obscure words in colledge and feel they HAVE to use them ALL the time.

People with higher educations that actually believe they are smarter then everyone else because they have a higher education.

I've known a lot of college educated idiots in my time and alot of uneducated geniuses and everything in between.
A college education doesnt make you smarter. Only more educated. And for some people even some of that is questionable LOL

Ok FYI im a truck driver. My biggest peeve is when you are driving at night on a major highway and the schmuck in the oncoming lane fails to use their dimmer for their lights. DUHHHHH just because you cant see the lights of the oncomong truck doesnot mean he/she cant see yours. Let me give you a little hint, if you can see the marker lights for the truck then he can see you high beams and you are blinding him/her.

These newer headlights they are using these days are all blinding to me. Even without the highbeams on.

That being said. because of their height. The lights of all trucks blind everyone in cars going in the opposite direction

Another two pet peeves. Truckers driving at night.  ;)

Truckers who insist on tailgating you as a way of intimidation.
I dont get intimidated. I get pissed off. and am game to the challange and will refuse to move and will often start to slow down. Trucker gonna threaten to run me over...go for it.
The fastest way to get into a confrontation with me is to try to intimidate me . Where as approaching me reasonably most of the time will get one more satisfactory results.
A quick flick of the lights while your still a reasonable distance behind me to let me know you want ot go by will find me much more co operative then filling my rear window with the grill of your truck

I am the same exact way,  :aok

when I first opened my Tattoo shop, about a month into it, I had a "visit" from the Town Biker gang, One did the talking, the other 8 or so, stood in a half circle around the waiting room with there arms crossed trying to look all tough,  so the one that actually talks says something like  "... so we will bring all Patch wearing members in and they will get a major discount, anyone who is not a patch wearing maember, them you can charge ...this is how it normaly works..."
after I laughed a few minutes I says to him "IF YOU get say 15 or more hours by me, THEN I will consider giving you a deal, if He ,(I point to one of the other members), gets a lot of work, him I will give a deal, but in no way will every "Patch" member get a deal just because they wear a patch."
They did not like this, no one ever came in from that club  :rofl

you wanna talk about getting pissed instead of intimidated, This is absolutely the truth,  about 16 years ago when I was really a mean bastard, I am walking across Valley st in my home town of Manchester, I see a small pickup coming but there is more then enough time to get across so I walk, well as the truck gets closer to me it points his nose right at me,(HOing A-Hole:-) so I stop in his lane and raise my arms like "what ya gonna do"  I don't move, he keeps coming right at me, I still don't move, as he veers around me, I side step and do a side thrust kick into the back of the truck, its like a small S-10, I send it almost all the way sideways, tires squeal, he slams on the brakes, I yell "COME ON MOTHER F-Ker" at which point he abruptly takes off.   :rofl :rofl (very smart move on his part at the time.)

there is NO intimadating this mofo :t

I'm 100% the same! I don't care how much I may dislike a person, I can hate them to the core, but if they approach me reasonably and respectfully, and ask kindly for something, 99% of the time they will get it.

However, try to take something from me, or intimidate me, and you will NEVER get what you're after. First off, I will state, I know this is NOT the mature route, nor is it always smart. This attitude is going to get me killed one day. But there is absolutely nothing on God's green earth that can intimidate me. As soon as you try to confront me and scare me, reason goes out the window in my head, and nothing but stubborn anger replaces it. As my mother likes to say, I would bite off my nose to spite my face.

Depends on the hill. LOL

How about the ones who as soon as they see a few snow flurries. Start slowing down and driving like they are in the middle of a full blown blizzard.

Or people who come to a near complete stop to make a right turn. And people in small cars who bear left, to make a right turn and vise verse as though they were driving an 18 wheeler.

I may not be on the road all day/night like you. But Im on the road more then your average person who just has to go to one place every day and then back home again at the end of the day.

I know, I know. I see em too.

the funniest are the go N slow drivers. Accelerate  till they practically tailgate the guy in front then brake. Let the car in front of them get a distance ahead. then do the same thing all over again. Or with nobody in front of them they accelerate till they reach the speed limit. Then brake and slow down. over and over and over again.

standard stuff like no using turn signals, passing me and then slowing down, but the stuff I hate the most is the things that will get me killed when I'm on my motorcycle: not checking your blind spot before you switch lanes, only getting up to 35 mph on the entrance ramp to a 70mph road, speeding up at yellow lights.... the list goes on, but if I get hit by a car while I'm on a motorcycle, the odds are not in my favor, and I'm only 20, I'd like to not have my life cut short because you do something I can't defend myself against.

I know how you feel...

It works both ways L0nGb0w.  As a driver for a city bus, I've seen more than a few bikes get DANGEROUSLY close to my bus on the freeway and the surface streets.  My last encounter, some tard almost put his helmet into my Left Mirror while on the highway.  I was doing 65 and he passed my like I was sitting still, riding the white strips.  Had I drifted just a few inches to the left (which was possible as there was enough wind that day), he'd been scattered all in front of my bus, which would've likely just went over him.  I will tell you right now that I would not have slammed on my brakes and I would not have been able to move into another lane (40,000 lbs don't respond well to slammed brakes).  I had a car on my Right and he was with a friend, who was to my left.  His friend was smart, and was completely in his own lane and not going as fast.

At the same time, I'm with you on that.  My brother was hit by some dumbarse that was racing his GIRLFRIENDS car down a surface street.  Struck him at his Right rear corner doing over 40 mph.  The helmet saved my brothers life, but now he has to carry a card with him if he is to ever get on a plane.  He's got 2 metal rods in his lower right leg now.  Both the bones broke and were sticking out of his leg, and the docs said he was lucky as it was a clean break and did not damage any of his nerves.  He's going to make a full recovery, according to the doctors.  Right now, he's still hurting.  It will be several more months before he's use to the rods in his leg.

All in all you MUST be careful around a large vehicle, such as a bus and especially a semi.  We have rather large blind spots which is made worse if someone on a bike is riding in them.

My major peeve are tards who like to use their cell phones while driving.  I nearly T-boned this wench who pulled out in front of me in her Honda CRV yesterday.  40,000 lbs traveling at 45 mph against a styrofoam cup?  She not much more than a bump in the road to me.  She was on her cell and was lucky that I was able to move onto the shoulder quick enough to avoid her.  The street I was traveling on has a large asphalt shoulder on each side of it, but if it was farther down the street, where there isn't a shoulder, things would've gotten bad right quick.  Later on that day, a guy driving a Tahoe, raced around from behind me, nearly rear ended a truck ahead of him, THEN cut me off.  Guess what I saw him doing when he did this???  Yep...on the effen cell.  I'm dreading the day when someone will cut me off, pull out in front of me, and I cream him/her, and the people in their vehicle.  All because you have to use a cell while driving.  The driver deserves what happens, the the people in my bus, in the car with the idiot, or me, don't need that.

And for the record, I don't even own a cell phone.  So you can't bring that argument against me. :lol  I'm not against cell phones either.  They can save your life if something should happen.

"Pet Peeves" too many to list.
Things that down right p*** me off:
1) People who have no idea what a turn signal is much less how to use it properly
2) People who sit after the light turns green just long enough so they are the only one who makes it across
3) Sports analysts who can't seem to see that the Saints made the Superbowl being a GOOD team, not by accident
4) Living an hour from the best party in the world (Mardi Gras)    :devil

I have a good laugh when drivers don't signal to move into a turn lane but once in the turn lane signal the right turn. Dah.

People that are not ready to go on a left turn traffic signal. Especially if only the signal is only long enough to let 4-5 vehicles turn and it is a long green for the cross street.

Whoa, the thread Ive been waiting for;

So pet peeves, from a UK Perspective you understand,

a.) Women in check-out queue's, that have to first pay with exact change extracted from the pound and  half of shrapnel in their purse , then carefully put notes coins and receipts all in their seperate compartments, then carefully place their purse in their hand bag in the right position, all the time having a conversation with the check out girl, whilst the queue of working guys on their lunch break builds behind her. Particularly fun if she's also unpacking her shopping to find the sweeties to quiet her screaming kid.

b.) Women who normally drive a Mini Metro (U.S read "ultra compact") but today hubbie's off work so she's taking the SAAB 9000 to drop the sprogs at school, no idea how to drive it, park it, reverse it, go over 40mph in it, or turn a corner in it without kerbing the alloys.

c.) Men, who having spent a lifetime driving a beige Austin Allegro (U.S read "old ultra compact with square steering wheel"), but just got their golden handshake and are now myopically driving a 4 litre supercharged Jaguar V8 at 25 mph between lanes. :furious

d.) HGV drivers, without fail, on every major UK road carrying out their 56mph speed limited races, making thousands of rolling roadblocks across the country, or alternately, deciding to travel down tight country road in 50 foot long wagons at 40mph holding up massive queues of vehicles, unable to overtake them because of their length.

e.) People whining about other people driving at, or slightly over the speed limit, blah blah. I ride fast because i like to feel alive, i drive fast for the same reason, i don't take risks with mine or anyone else's life, i have 3 Police driving qualifications and a Police advanced bike course. I have a clean license and no convictions because i understand there is a time and a place.

f.) People with their silly upper crust accents looking surprised at me being able to conduct a reasoned and relatively eloquent conversation on a number of subjects because since i left the police and took over the family firm and now i sweep chimneys for a living, and the ability to formulate whole sentences does not fit in with their predetermined stereotype of me.

Sorry, rant over :bolt:

I guess staying out of a cars blindspots is out of the question?

Usually located in the rear quarters. even in a car I try to stay out of them cept when Im passing

Remember two rules at all times and you should be fine.
1- Assume everyone else is a larger idiot then you are
2-Assume everyone else is out to kill you personally.

I have a rule 3 as well. Make sure all other vehicles in the immediate vicinity are behind you. that cuts the amount of bad things that can happen to you down to one.
