Title: Then and Now
Post by: ink on June 05, 2010, 09:23:52 PM
I am a stats kinda guy, Not that I judge someone's  ability by there stats, unless you know exactly how someone flies, which is impossible unless you are in the cockpit with him:-) or it's yourself. so I use it for my own judgment and progression throughout the years.
what is your progression? anybody else compare themselves? who wants to share?

damn I actually flew bombers and got in GV's :O

What I've found more interesting is my hit ratio.  My first tour (around 78) it was around a 4.  Now, it hovers around 10 to 12.

But I still suck too. :D

Frankly I can't tell anything by my stats or scores.

There was a period of time I flew for score and my stats looked great.  I was in the top 10-15 overall for several months in a row.  Before that and after that I play(ed) for fun and don't really care what the scores and stats say.  Last camp I got into a me on four, killed three then got killed.  Tonight I got into a me on 10-15, killed 2, stayed alive for almost five minutes then got killed.  Most times I'm not so lucky.  I fly for those infrequent times that I am and damn the stats for the most part.

My first month of AH I actually flew a lot, got a lot of kills. Its so long ago the scores & stats don't go back that far.

Now 10 years later, my reflex's are shot, my eyesight is slipping, concentration not as good. Hand eye coordination slipping.

There is an old saying, "those that can, do. Those that can't, teach"

Well I just can't do it much anymore, so yes I teach. :)

I don't get many kills, but if I turn on a few lightbulbs, well I'm happy.

In the end its not what you do that counts, its finding something to do, and enjoying it.

Nothing to shout about all these years. I never had the energy after dealing with an extremely physical job (tree trimming back then) to devote time to getting better in fighters. Not my thing, really. I come in after work, usually tired, and so my thing to do for fun is relax & B.S. in my bombers. I usually don't kill very effectively in a fighter, but meet my gun turrets sometime. :)

on the home page where you go to "forums" on the right in that list plane, there is a choice for "score and stats" click that then type in your name and choose the tour you want.
don't think that someone scores shows his "skill" it don't, what it is good for checking out your own progression.

I see every one is showing a good improvement :aok

Last month was my 5 year anniversary in Aces High and hopefully some of the new guys from FA can take some heart from what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

Tour 64:

Kills  1058
Deaths 629
Hours:  187

Tour 124:

Kills 1003
Deaths 97
Hours 84

Spatula's program is really useful if your into looking at this stuff.  I know FA's leaderboard kept a running tally of kills and I would be really interested in seeing who has done the most kills ever.  I'd put my money SHawk.     :salute

Tour 70 - my "two weeks": K/D 1.15, K/S 0.62, K/H 4.18, hit% 6.52
Tour 124 - more than 40,000 kills later: K/D 10.52, K/S 2.81, K/H 7.70, hit% 14.84

But my "pinnacle" in terms of scoring stats was a long time ago, I'm not flying that focused anymore and lack of concentration or attention get's me killed more frequently these days.  :x

For the first few months I flew AH, I kept a journal of sorts.  I do this for a lot of hobbies, as they're pretty fun to read years later.  A few excerpts:

Quote

April 9, 2004

My accuracy has improved somewhat, although I’m still in the “spray and pray” mode.  The most kills I can acquire are two in a mission.  After that, I’m simply out of ammo.

...

Although I am wasting many bullets on high deflection shots, I am getting better at hitting things that are coming right at me.

Quote

April 10, 2004

On thing I’ve learned from AH is that if you’re going up against a mass of aircraft, you’d better be sure to stay near your own group of buddies.  Once you get separated, or even if you are on the outskirts of the group, you’re in big, big trouble.  I learned that one the hard way last night.

I like to think I fly differently now.

Took a little sampling of my kills to death ratio over the my AH "career" and I think it's very telling how little stats can mean when looked at in a vacuum, and how many external factors effect them and how those factors are not constants by vary quite a bit from tour to your.

Tour12:   K/D 1.39
Tour 73:  K/D 5.63
Tour124: K/D 2.39

I know that my current cartoon fighter pilot could probably fly rings around my Tour 73 (back in 2004) self.  I was also scoring more kills per hour in 2004 than I am now as well 14.90 compared to 12.53.

Still I suppose it is kind of fun to look every once in awhile. :)

That was wise talking  :aok

Yes, but you fly differently now than in Tour 73 I assume, more aggressively with a lack of regard for getting ganged and towered.  If you take your more skilled self and fly the same way you used to in tour 73, you'd have better stats in comparison.

That's probably true, there has been a general trend my approach to the game over the years away from surviving and more towards accepting the hand that the MA deals and seeing if I can still win with it.

Believing that every fight is winnable, you just need to pick the right moves at the right time, is what drives me to fly the same as the above quote.

Sometimes the right move is getting out of Dodge.  A lot of fights are winnable but some situations are checkmate, plain and simple.  I like to fly an aggressive brand in the MA but I usually have a good sense when a manageable, outnumbered situation is about ready to implode on top of me.  The best in the game at seeing this imo is Steve and kappa.

That's pretty much what I usually do.  I can usually see the situation developing, but I just can't stop myself from jumping into it.  Just like when I'm in a fight and for whatever reason decide to kill one particular guy out of a group.  I see the guys making passes and getting behind me, I see the tracers, but I just want to kill that one particular guy so I just go on with that.  I don't know why exactly, it just seems more fun to me.  I love it if I can take down a couple out of a group, that's the best feeling to me.

Bingo.  Does anyone think I like bugging out when I am so close to having a guy dead?  It sucks!! It takes self restraint to be able to let a guy go when he was clearly dead if you wanted him to be.

Agreed completely...but what's really cool is to see my 93 year old grandfather, a 51B and P-40E pilot, just become entranced with the layout and modeling of those two planes in-game.  He swears its dead-on-balls accurate...he loves watching me pretend but has no compunction whatsoever about reminding me that bad decisions (he saw me jump right into a ton of red one afternoon) cause men to not come back...."you made a poor decision to jump into that mess son".   hehehehe

The family is coming to our house for ribs on the 20th.  I will put the headphones on him if you are online and you can ask him whatever you like.  I am sure that he would love to talk....

Get online on Aug 7th when my grandpa that flew B-25s all over the South Pacific is in town from St Louis....he is a riot.  He divorced my Grandma because he went back for a 2nd tour!!  He didn't want to come home and he has no problem telling folks that.  He said he wouldn't do it again but at 22 years old, it was the best time of his life.  Rabaul, New Guinea, Port Moresby, New Hollandia...56 combat flights in the 25H....I have his mission and aircraft number and name list...wanna see um? ( I feel like a kid saying that but he is the best)

Changeup, That is awesome, I would love to hear some of his stories about his experiences. Wow, I don't know if you have, but it would be  very cool if you compiled a list of his experiences and stories before they are lost forever. Some day there will be no one left alive who had combat experience in those aircraft it will be only the written experiences we have left.

The B25 grandpa has a diary he won't let anyone look at until he passes (its for no other reason than because we all want to see it....he's a coot) and my Dad has the 51B grandpa's stories written down....like when they shot up a cardboard Nazi "train" on the tracks....he said the lack of "smoke" kinda gave it away!!  lmao...I will post the official record of Mom's dad.
