Screw MoH, CoD and get Fallout: New Vegas.
Been playing the Hell out of it over the weekend and it's great. I'm really liking the hardcore mode, gives it more of that old Fallout feel and a little bit of a challenge. Can't load up on weapons and ammo and leave the food and water behind and the moral choices seem to have more 'grey' area than Fallout 3, again more in line with the original and sequal.
Lots of good improvements over Fallout 3, like being able to repair equipment based on type instead of exact match. If I find a Merc Adventurer's armor and have a Merc Grunt armor piece, I can use the Grunt armor to repair the Adventurer's armor. You can also add mods to weapons and reload your own bullets if you have the necessary skill points. Crafting is much easier too but they make it look more complex than it is, it's basically if you have the skill and ingredients you can craft it.
Combat is easier but still has that kind of marionette puppet character animation from Fallout 3 but not as bad. Shooting is easier and seems more "accurate" than in Fallout 3 and V.A.T still rules unchallenged though you don't have to rely on it for every shoot out like in Fallout 3. At least in the earlier levels (I'm only level 8) I find myself firing in 1st person view than using V.A.T to queue up my shots.
Haven't gotten a companion yet but from what I've seen in the manual you have far greater control over your companion than the last game. Now I won't be so afraid of letting my companion use the mini-nuke launcher without fear of him trying to use it in close combat situations like that damn zombie from Fallout 3.
Still has the 1st/3rd Person view and like Fallout 3, 3rd person view sucks for combat but good for exploring while 1st person is good for combat and sucks for exploring. So I guess in that regards, same as Fallout 3.
I do wish they had used a new engine for the game but I can understand why they had to use the Gamebryo engine and they did update it quite a bit and it can be seen in improved graphics over Fallout 3. The radio is a let down, it seems there are only 4 songs in the Nevada wastelands and Wayne Newton sounds like he's talking with a mouth full off bourbon and Xanax, sometimes its hard to understand what he's saying because of his slurring. Maybe as the map opens up some I'll find more radio stations with a better playlist.
I'm still in the early parts of the game, doing more exploring than anything else right now. Have found some pretty cool stuff so far and some other things that I don't want to come back to until I'm at a much higher level. *Hint* don't be low level when caught at the Hidden Valley bunkers after dusk. So far it's a great game, a big improvement over Fallout 3 thought it does have some weak areas like I mentioned and there are a couple of annoying issues like clipping though doors and having some mobs fall through the geometry but those can be fixed with patches hopefully soon.

Arg.... I loved Fallout 3, now I'm going to have to go get this one too.
:)

For once we agree.
Fallout 3 almost destroyed my life and education, it was so addictive and fun to play it was beyond belief. Graphics were cool, atmosphere spot on, sick humour was hilarious and on top of all that the endless features could keep you busy for DAYS, let alone hours.
New Vegas looks to be the same but considerably better, unfortunately I have to wait two more days in Australia to get it.

Anyone have it for Xbox? My PC is on the fritz, and won't be up to snub anytime in the near future and I am really stoked to get this game. I just hope it isn't ruined by Xbox as so many other of my favorite games have been.

Of the three platforms, the PC is obviously the best to get it for but I've heard that the Xbox 360 version is slightly better than the PS3 version, the lighting and shadowing is done better and far less jagged edges though both have about the same draw distance.

There's this little mom and pop video game store in Venice that has been there for years and the meaning of "street date" is lost on them. I dropped in on Saturday to pick up Dead Rising 2 (great gory zombie killing fun), the owner asked if I wanted to pick up Fallout then but for the PS3 or wait until Tuesday to pick up the PC version. I think this thread pretty much shows what my decision was. :aok

There's only one game I've enjoyed more than Fallout 3 for the PS3, and that was Borderlands. I'll definitely be picking up a copy once I get some bills in order. Unfortunately, if I want to play a one player game for hours on end, I'll have to buy the wife a few of her own.....
Well, here's to dreaming :)

The Sims aren't going to cut it - she's a full fledged gamer. Borderlands was such a hit in our house because it was one of the few FPS that we could sit down and play the story mode in together. Hell, we started dating because of Resistance 1. Resident Evil 5 was also a huge hit for us.
On the other hand, she did really like Silent Hill Homecoming(?) and Heavy Rain. Hopefully something along those lines will come up to keep her going for a few days.
Of course, all this and she hates Aces High

I've been thinking of using that game to simulate a Vault Experiment, complete with all of the crazy art deco and atompunk designs. It's an interesting game for learning about human nature, as you can control every inch of it if you are so inclined.

Looks like you can have multiple companions though at this point not sure how many. So far I've got a sniper and a robot as my side kicks and both are pretty good at combat and the extra inventory space is nice.

Question for those who play it. I've never played any of the Fallout games, or even seen them played, but I was watching a Fall:NV video and it looked decent. Would I be missing anything story-wise to start the games with Fallout 3? Also, how good are the games honestly (what's good/bad about it), and how hard are they? (I love a difficult FPS) It looked a bit like Bioshock (or vice versa which ever) and I loved Bioshock (Loved the older time period, story, looks, and the general play of it), so it looks like I'd like it, but before I consider spending the money I was just curious how it really is since I need a new FPS. :)

You don't need to have played the other games before playing Fallout: New Vegas. It does help though because the lore is so rich and vast that playing the other games will help fill in what has happened but not missing out anything story wise.
Fallout: New Vegas is a good game, better than Fallout 3 as it features a lot of improvements over Fallout 3 in both game play and tech wise. The game can be hard or easy, depending on how you play and how you spec out your character. A bad character build can make the game hard and frustrating while an uber build can make the game easy. There is a new feature in Fallout: New Vegas called "Hard Core Mode" that really does make the game challenging and its the difficulty level that I'm playing on. Water pays a key part as you can become dehydrated if you don't drink and starve if you don't eat (you don't need to drink or eat in any of the other difficulty modes) and ammo carries more weight so you have to balance out what you're carrying.

At the beginning when it makes you assign points to the specific characteristics(charisma agility...ect), does the way you assign the available points have a great effect on the game? I have always simply spread them out pretty evenly. Does it help to load them up on one end or the other?
-
My starting build:
Strength - 6
Perception - 6
Endurance - 6
Charisma - 8
Intelligence - 6
Agility - 5
Luck - 4
So far it's been okay... I am probably going to regret the lack of luck or something down the road. I find the ability to convince people early on is helping (speech) but I'm not terribly accurate with guns and such so combat gets frustrating occasionally.
I'm only level three so far and in the second town. Pretty cool story so far, I like the fact that there is more direction to the quests (at least it feels that way) rather than the open endedness that FO3 had.
-
As far as the Stats go, yes it is VERY important, and will determine how you want to play your character. I'm running my first character (non-hardcore mode) as a sharpshooter+explosives expert, with extremely high perception and agility at the cost of some charisma, luck, and endurance. However, I'm going to run hardcore mode next with a high strength and endurance character, (so he can carry all that water+ food in the desert :) ) who will specialize in melee combat.
Apart from individual skill sets being modified, your stats will also determine which perks you can get with levels. For example, I think (off the top of my head) the educated perk requires at least 4 or 5 intelligence, and is not an option without it. I'm sure there are some really good guides online which spell it out in greater detail, so I don't want to be redundant here.

In the beginning part of the game I noticed that it would have been a good idea to sink some points into Speech, Repair and Science. With Speech you get different chat options and with a high enough speech at the start you can get past some of the early tough spots. If you have a high enough repair/science at the beginning you can get the robot companion earlier and without having to spend a lot of time scrounging around for the parts you need to repair it manually. Science also allows you to make your own bullets if it's high enough.

I'm really interested in this game, however, I'm disappointed there are no vehicles you can drive. I love these sandbox style games but hate how none of them allow you to drive tanks and crush everything. :D :t

Thanks Ack, I'll definitely have to pick them up sometime soon as they sound fun. The food/water reminds me of a PS2 game that had a similar concept (Dark Cloud) of how Food was health and Water had to be restored throughout dungeons to avoid passing out. List of games to get is getting long. :)

Feral ghouls and Glowing ones, yes. Super Mutants, not sure yet, but there ARE Nightkin, which are purple Super Mutants that are smarter and seemingly a bit tougher. Centaurs too, plus bigger Evolved Centaurs. Brotherhood of steel is out there as well, so I would assume the Enclave is in hiding here too.
Problem is, on hardcore mode at least, you barely have the weapons to fight them off. I am barely scraping by each fight, as I cannot find any decent weapons on bodies or in storage, and I don't want to spend the money at a merchant.
Oh, and the Deathclaws are back and more powerful than ever.

Look around in the starter town and you'll find a laser pistol and you get a 10mm pistol (pretty good one too) early on. As soon as you can, upgrade the vermin rifle with extended clips to hold more than 5 shots. It will get you buy until you get the cowboy repeater (same as Lincoln's Repeater from FO3) or the 9mm submachine gun. When you get the .357 revolver keep it but you'll be splitting the .357 ammo between the cowboy repeater and the .357 revolver. You also find a plasma pistol and rifle early on (rifle is in the bad guy casino where the deputy is being held) and I found a laser automatic rifle that was on the Nightkin mutant that was killing the rancher's braumen bulls.
Here is a list I've compiled so far of the special named weapons that I know about and I'm sure there are quite a bit that I'm missing.
Displacer Glove: Pushy – On the body of a Jackal Gang member, inside the Ruby Hill Mine.
Oh, Baby! – Near a Chewed Stealth Boy in the deepest part of Charleston Cave.
Laser Rifle: AER14 Prototype – Inside the Vault 22 Common Area, on the blocked stairwell only accessible from the Food Production level.
Spiked Knuckles: Love and Hate – On the Viper Gang Leader in Bonnie Springs.

9mm Submachine Gun: Vance’s Submachine Gun – Inside the safe at Win’s Hideout.
Laser Pistol: Pew Pew – On the body of Allen Marks, after completing “The Legend of the Star.”
Bladed Gauntlet: Cram Opener – Owned by Little Buster, in Camp McCarran.
Cowboy Repeater: La Longue Carabine – Carried by Corporal Sterling, in Camp McCarran.
This Machine – Your reward from Contreras for not turning him in, at the end of Free Quest: Dealing with Contreras.
Plasma Rifle: Q-35 Matter Modulator – In a pod casement, in the locked shipping room of REPCONN HQ.
9 Iron: Nephi’s Golf Driver – Carried by a Fiend named Driver Nephi, in his territory.
Euclid’s C-Finder – Carried by Max, in and around Nick and Ralph’s, on the Freeside Streets.
Straight Razor: Figaro – Owned by Sergio, in the back of King’s School of Impersonation.
Boxing Gloves: Golden Gloves – On the upper bar of the Casino Floor, inside Lucky 38 Casino.
9mm Pistol: Maria – On Benny, when you kill him.
Lead Pipe: The Humble Cudgel – Near the Prospector Corpse, inside the Sealed Sewers.
Grenade Rifle: Thump-Thump – Lying on the floor near the Ant mound at the Nellis Array.
BB Gun: Abilene Kid LE BB Gun – Lying on a shelf inside the Fiend’s Shack.
Minigun: CZ57 Avenger – Inside, at the back of the container trailer, by the dead body, in the Devil’s Throat.
Marksman Carbine: All-American – On the floor, on an upturned table in the Armory Cache, Vault 34.
Pulse Gun – Found in the Armory Cache, Vault 34.
Bumper Sword: Blade of the East – Carried by Legate Lanius, in the legate’s camp.
.44 Magnum Revolver: Mysterious Magnum – Owned by the Lonesome Drifter, by the Sunset Sasparilla Billboard, close to El Dorado Dry Lake.
Fat Man – Near the skeleton by the southern silt pool, in Quarry junction. Also occasionally found on prospector corpses.
.357 Magnum Revolver: Lucky – In the floor safe inside the cashier’s area of the Vikki & Vance Casino, in Primm.
Combat Knife: Chance’s Knife – In Chance’s Grave.
Missile Launcher: Annabelle – Carried by the Nightkin Sniper on Black Rock summit, Black Rock mountain.
Zap Glove: Paladin Toaster – Near the body of the dead prospector in Black Rock cave.
Sawed-Off Shotgun: Big Boomer – Carried by Old Lady Gibson, in Gibson scrap yard.
That Gun – On a shelf in the locked storage room inside the Dino Bite Gift Shop, in Novac.
Grenade Machine-gun: Mercy – On the floor of Dead Wind Cavern, near a dead BoS Paladin.
Varmint Rifle: Ratslayer – Propped up against the desk, inside the Broc Flower Cave.
Machete: Liberator – Carried by Dead Sea, in Nelson.
Cleaver: Chopper – Found on the stove of Wolfhorn Ranch.
Frag Grenade: Holy Frag Grenade – In the basement of the eastern church in Camp Searchlight. Wild Wasteland must be taken.
Fire Axe: Knock Knock – In the Camp Searchlight Fire Station, in the restrooms.
Sniper Rifle: Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle – In the footlocker of the Sniper’s Nest, overlooking the Cottonwood Cove.
DogTag Fist: Recompense of the Fallen – In Aurelius’ desk, on the upper floor of the main building in Cottonwood Cove.
Hunting Shotgun: Dinner Bell – Inside the shack at the Old Nuclear Test Site.
Tesla Cannon: Tesla-Beaton Prototype – On the ground near the crashed Vertibird.
In hardcore mode, it is important when you spec out your character that you put extra points into Endurance, Science and Repair. Endurance will increase your hit points as well as stamina to carry more inventory. Science and Repair almost go hand in hand as with the Science skill, you'll be able to craft your own ammo and with repair, you can repair your own gear without having to pay anyone for it. I know that at the start you can repair your own gear to 100% without having to put any points into it but if you do it will take less resources to repair an item. For example, you have Merc Grunt armor and needs to be repaired and you have the base repair points on your character and it might take 5 or so additional Merc armor suits to repair your Merc Grunt armor to 100%. If you had put points into repair, the amount of resources needed for repairs significantly drops. Speech and Barter are also important in Hard Core mode. You can get by with putting little into strength and the other stats in the beginning because you do get a perk that gives you S.P.E.C.I.A.L points (1) that you can add and you'll be able to get implants later on to boost your S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats further in addition to any armor that has S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats. Basically, hard core mode isn't really geared to the 100% combat type characters and you'll need to be able to talk yourself out of trouble just as much as shooting your way out of trouble.

Thanks Ack. I've got the Service Rifle, the .357 magnums, the Cowboy Repeater, and the lasers and plasmas, but I cannot use the plasma rifle as its a couple thousand chips to repair it to working condition. I guess the problem isn't so much finding decent weapons, as finding multiples of them so you can repair them.
-
In my current campaign, money isn't an issue. I'm at level 10, with about 4.3k caps. However, I'm quite sure when I switch over to hardcore mode on my next toon, that things will be different.
Ugghhhh every time I read this damn thread it makes me want to leave work to go home and play. :bolt:
-
Level 10 now with 2.4 thousand caps. I am a poor bastage. I do have a chick with me who has this robotic hand giggty. I think you can get a mole rat from the town outside the quarry but iam not sure on that. IT is loads better than fallout 3 addicted like i was with Red Dead.
-
Okay, Wild Wasteland perk. What's it do? I've got it, but haven't noticed anything strange...
-
If you have 100 caps and want more, here's what to do.
Do the quest to guard the door of the plasma gun shop in freeside.
After that, go get a 100 cap bodyguard.
Run into the plasma gun store and grab everything you can, then run. Your bodyguard will be a meat shield.
I got near 2000 caps last time I did it.
-
Okay, Wild Wasteland perk. What's it do? I've got it, but haven't noticed anything strange...
Random things pop up every once in awhile, near the starting point there's a skeleton in a refrigerator - that didn't save him ;). There should be a notification at the top left when you're near something.

I know some things are changed, without the WW perk you will find a Gauss Rifle somewhere on the map. With the perk you'll find an Alien Blaster in the same location, but no Gauss Rifle.

Okay, this is driving me crazy. Everywhere I seem to go, I am completely overwhelmed. 4-5 Glowing ones come flying in at me in certain areas, 4 deathclaws at once, and none of my weapons are up to the task. Does it get any more manageable at some point?

You'll hear some notes of weird music and a "..." icon will appear in the top left corner of your HUD. It usually means there is something "weird" near you that is usually some sort of American pop culture reference like the refigerator from the last craptastic Indiana Jones movie. While it's more of an easter egg kind of thing, there are some loot that you won't stumble across unless you have the Wild Wasteland perk.

Yeah, don't travel north out of the starter town. work your way south to Primm first, do the save the deputy quest and speak with him and then go to Novac.
Do the quests in Novac and go to the RepConn Test Site and do that quest to help the ghouls (but don't get 2 things needed to launch the rocket yet). When you're sent off to get the two parts needed to launch the rockets, go back to Primm and talk to the old guy in the Mojave Express office (Do not go to the scrap yard first, otherwise you bug the robot companion quest) and ask him about the robot (ED-E) to open up a side quest. If you're repair isn't high enough to repair him, you should have all the necessary parts if after going through RepConn (you should also have enough resources to reprogram the Primm Slim to be the new sheriff). If you have ED-E up and running, now it's time to go to the scrap yard as now the ED-E quest says to go to the scrap yard. Go to the scrap yard and you'll get a message from ED-E and it will play a voice recording giving some additional clues and pick up the rocket fuel and get the location of the 2nd part for the rockets. Finish off the quest for the ghouls (if you sabotage the launch it gives positive karma points for the people of Nomac), go to Helios One for the next part of ED-E's quest and after you've done that go to Nipton and continue that stage of the main story quest. Afterwards you should be strong enough to be able to explore around without dying all the time. Unlike Fallout 3, a poorly rolled character will make this game a lot tougher than it would be normally and unlike Fallout 3, specializing in just one thing (like all guns, nothing else) isn't going make things easier. Best to spread things around, as stats pay more of an important part in New Vegas than in Fallout 3.
Remember, do not go to the Gibson Scrapyard prior to getting the ED-E quest and fixing it. If you do you'll never be able to complete the ED-E companion quest which means you'll never be able to upgrade its laser or armor nor the treasure it's supposed to know the location of. Only go to the scrap yard after you've repaired ED-E and you get the prompt to go to the scrap yard.

Restart the game. I got the game early and started playing it over the weekend and had to restart it due to the ED-E broken quest bug. Had 16 hours already invested in it but I restarted and rolled a new character knowing what I know now and am having a much more enjoyable and less frustrating experience.

What would you suggest rolling for skills?

80k caps at level 8. Hardcore mode, hard difficulty. How? Simple! 10 Luck I could go knock over a few more casinos but this is really probably more dough than I'll need to complete the game.
Also found an Looping quest XP bug that would allow me to level indefinitely while standing still. I'm kinda disappointed with how buggy this game is, it feels like a glorified expansion pack with a $50 price tag. But hands down the most obnoxious thing is the inventory system. It's a clunky unsorted mess with such a ridiculous amount of items the vast majority of which are worthless it feels like at least 20% of my gametime is wasted juggling inventory around. This has gotten even worse than fallout 3 as now they decided to make a complex (and almost completely useless) crafting system that multiplies the number of junk items in the game.

I think I found another bug. In "The Thorn" you can bet caps on animal fights. Similar to dogfighting IRL. I made a bet and the 2 animals came out and just stand there and look at each other forever. This sucks because there is a quest in progress with the owner of the joint and you cant interact with her until the fight is over. :uhoh Anyone else have this problem?

Make sure all of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L skills are at the minimum 5. This will leave you with a couple of more points that you can sink into some extra stuff. I put some extra points into Intelligence, Endurance, Agility and Luck. You'll get a perk that gives you one S.P.E.C.I.A.L point to assign to whichever one you want, I recommend taking advantage of that perk, think you can stack it 10 times. There is also a doctor somewhere in New Vegas that sells implants that boosts your S.P.E.C.I.A.L points, heard it's expensive. One reason it's important to boost up Endurance is that you only get 9 implants and if you don't have a high enough endurance you won't be able to equip all nine implants.

I have been playing this addictive game for the last week on Xbox 360. One funny thing is that I had not thought of the singer Marty Robbins hardly since I was a kid (45 now). My dad used to listen to him on occasion.
With Ed-E I'm not sure about going the BoS route or the other.
Boone is handy! I'm an energy weapons user and have found some good stuff. Still have not completed the they went thatawy quest.

I've been playing Fallout 3 (not New Vegas) on a friend's Xbox360.
Their graphics engine makes me sick to my stomach. I think its the 'gliding on air' walk coupled with the terrain's irritating effect that gives that sensation. I can barely play more than 30 minutes at a time.
The game's interesting but I wouldn't buy it nor this new game because of the graphic sickness. Hopefully fallout4's engine will be better (and its crafting and repair.. I find it ridiculous that the majority of the weapons in the game aren't craftable.. I mean, its post-apocalypse! people make stuff from junk as a rule :P ).
