Just a thought. Most kids today are incompetent, foolish, ignorant, so on. Granted, there is an amount who are gifted, polite, for the most part good kids. Unfortunately, that kind of person as a whole seems to be fewer and fewer in the world, as opposed to the past.
I suppose it would be better if my generation (16th birthday was on 30th of the 10th) were to be killed off and restarted. Sure, it sounds awfully morbid, but if this generation is the hope of the future, then gosh we're screwed.
Anyhow, not trying to insinuate anything, just a thought. A big <S> to you oldies (26+) and good luck to the next batch of kids that come through.
Hmm, I suppose the majority of the BBS community will either ignore this thread, or read it and say 'pathetic, no meaning, not worth my time', or something along those lines. Probably because I'm 'known' as EskimoJoe, also 'That one guy that is below the rest of us, sub par'. Am I right? Just a thought.

Never count a generation out because the media has a way of celebrating the extremes.
-
i actually see what he's describing. i see it every day.
it's disturbing, when a girl says she rear ended a van because her abs didn't work. and no matter how we tried to explain to her that she shouldn't need her abs, she just couldn't get it.
then there was the girl that thought we ruined her brakes, because they stopped vibrating after we replaced the pads, and destroyed rotors, and cleaned off the trigger wheel(all the metal shavings causing the abs to activate)
-
I don't think I'm incompetent, but I'm sure some would disagree :devil

That picture didn't break any more rules than the other pictures did.
There are plenty more photos of scantily clad women on the internets.

Eskimoe, I see your point. Every generation had it's losers. With the internet I think you just see more of them. Along with that you can also see more of the good folks. They just don't usually get as much air time.
The only thing you can do is take the high road yourself. Let the others fall as they may.

This makes me laugh...my dad was career military and I remember him yelling at me constantly...
"Turn that Iron Maiden Bull**** off, what the hell are you listening to that Van Halen garbage for!!"
He'd go on for hours about how kids 'these days' were idiots and morons...
Today, with a few notable exceptions, most of my childhood friends turned out pretty normal - doctors, lawyers, businessmen, etc.
I think every generation has this problem. In my parent's day, Buddy Holly and Elvis were evil, before that it was Big Band Swing, before that Jazz.
Course, today, I think I'm in the majority of people who'd love to kick the crap outta Justin Beiber, so I guess I'm no different than my old man!

but if you go to music, listen to what's popular today...they sing about killing people, effing each other, etc.......the female singers seem to think they need to wear as little as possible.........music has devolved a lot.

Calling it music is being much too generous CAP1

I kid turned 16. We are make her drive everywhere we go. Well we are the only ones :uhoh All of her 10ish known friends got their parents hand on the keys of the car "U got ur licence ... go ahead". Not really? Seriously? No wonder she's scared when she drives with them.
Kids are like pets, they are a handfull and require constant supervision. That takes ALOT of your time, often all of ur free time and this generation of parent being the most materialistic one ever, too few think that being a good parent is "providing". As a result, we have a bunch of self educated whimpy spoiled brats runing around.
We "harvest what we greew".
-
Music tends to be a good social indicator of the state of society as a whole, especially if you're looking backwards.
The problem with society as a whole is multi-fold. We (society) want everything for free, we want it now. There's a highly vocal minority who are driving the agenda that we shouldn't offend ANYONE for any reason. We (society) are, for the most part, complacent, waiting for someone else to solve the problem. I think this carries over in different permutations from generation to generation.
When I was 10, 11...I didn't care about politics, or the war in Vietnam. When I was 20 Gulf War was a concern, but I felt it was for the right reasons. By the time 24, 25 rolled around, I was beginning to see and comprehend the moral breakdown of society, crime, etc. By 35 I was actively trying to help change it, because I had the ability and the time. Now, at 43, all I can do is vote and try to make sense of all the mud-slinging and blame-game TV commercials.
I look at kids now and ask myself if I was like that when I was a kid. Gang wars, shooting, drugs, of course not. But I'm sure some guy my father's age drove by me riding my bike with an Iron Maiden T-shirt and thought "What a loser".
I still have that T-shirt!

what appears now will mature into something different with time, i was a teen in the 70's.. been there, done that, tried that, partied like a rock star, hung around the stoner/jock crowd i guess i could of been influenced by people but i always kept what my parents and grandparents taught me inside, Now at 50 i have all i want now, new house, great lady, all my toys, great kids and a 2 grandbabies, but i will say the majority of kids today are alittle self-centered and have that give me give me attitude, All the parent can do and should be doing is helping to guide there kids in whats right and what's wrong, the value of things and how to obtain what they want in life even after there away from home, your still a parent try to guide it's what we do :old:

Yes, well the blame has still been set upon you and cat. So, until then, YOUR FAULT! :neener:
-
Seriously I agree and disagree on some points; I am in it with CAP in that I see it every day and have seen it fall farther down the chain of kids in less that 5 years. 5 years ago I would have said that my oldest son's group...he is now 14...were probably going to be ok; now I am not so sure and our 2nd childs friends were going to be in the tail end of that group as well. Now I see a lack of desire in kids who are 6-8 years old that shouldn't be there who think that they should get stuff just for being in the group.
-
I think Zoom hit the nail on the head...its as much the parents' fault as it is the kids'.
I grew up in a strict, military family. I was allowed to be a kid, but there were limits, and exceeding those limits usually meant I was put back in line with a backhand. You could do that in those days. Whether you consider it right or wrong, it worked when I got my arse kicked, because I REMEMBERED later on.
Today even toddlers have Family Services on speed-dial. Kids can't be disciplined the way they used to be (and I'm not condoning abuse here by any means), and they know it. So society has basically given them the freedom to get away with as much as they can.
Now...all that being said...my daughter just turned twelve. She's an A+ student going to a private school. She plays volleyball (back-to-back conference champs this past weekend), shoots competitive archery, rides horses, volunteers at a shelter and has more money saved in the bank than I do. Fortunately, she still thinks boys are 'icky', but I'll deal with that later.
I make it a point to spend time with my kid, to teach her right from wrong. Without being a helicopter parent, I know where she is, who her friends are, and she's a happy kid. Maybe that will change as she gets older, but I honestly believe that if some of these parents spent a little more time with their kids, we wouldn't have as many problems with them as we do.
J
-
i've long said it was parents faults......but i'm often told i'm wrong since i'm not a parent myself.
in my case, my grandparents raised myself, and my brother. i used to think they were too tough on us.
not that i'm old enough to know better, i thank god that they were the way they were. only wish they were still here so i could tell em.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
-Socrates; c. 469 BC–399 BC
The youth of today is nothing new and nothing special. Now, if you had bee a teenager in the '60s you would have some stories to tell.
-
I have heard the same stuff 30 years ago. ;)
big difference.
30 years ago, most kids left highschool with common sense. even for something as simple as driving a car. they earned their cars.
now, most expect their parents to give em a car.........and if it's given to em, they don't appreciate it. they beat the snot outta it.
then they do silly crap like assume the abs is there to let them tailgate in the rain. they think abs will shorten their stopping distances. they think they don't need seatbelts, because they have airbags. i've watched kids take the corner out front swinging wider than 53 foot tractor-trailers(loories to you guys over there) do. they don't know the simplest maneuver in their car. guys insist on multi-tasking, when they've no clue about their car....because they're invincible.
girls insist on texting, doing their makeup, and fixing their hair........
couple years ago, i was driving a flatbed tow truck. it was a gmc 6500 series(GVW 24,500). i had a ford f-150 on the back. teenage girl in a saab convertible comes screaming past me on the right(it was the shoulder, not a lane), pulls in front of me, and then slams on her brakes. i barley managed to miss her....mostly 'cause i knew what she was gonna do.
-
We had 3 kids at my school take their moms 60,000 dollar mercedes for a joyride.
They took a 45 degree turn at 110 MPH and 2 of them werent wearing seatbelts, one was ejected 30 feet from the car and was knocked out, another flew threw the sunroof, and the only one wearing his seatbelt called 911.
They are very lucky noone was killed.
Their punishment? A slap on the wrist, then they bought a new mercedes a week later.

Im 18, and I would've been wishing I had been ejected from the car rather than face the wrath of my parents :lol

see?
last two posts made my point. if they really were doing 110mph.......whelp.......i know we all did things like that, but c'mon.

I hate to point the finger at a particular demographic but my 22yo sons mates that are from single mother families dont know squat about "Blokey" stuff. One of them cut his hand to pices because he didn't know how to remove a light globe :( and most of them have no real world skills and are basically unemployable. They all have entitlement issues (probably from living in a social security environment all their life.) and believe the government actually owes them their dole check. These are the ones we need to fear.

Most of those issues are inbred through nurturing...just saying.

I see it like this...
as drug tastes and preferences evolved, so did music :devil
for example:
dope musicians made fantasy, slow oriented music (mostly rock).
then a few decades later speed musicians (obviously speed consumers) sped up rock music with thrash metal.
at the same time well known rappers (some of them who are distributors of crack and coke to make a living) brought reality music to the mainstream.

back to the subject at hand
EJ
Through this game I've 'met' a lot of young men from your generation that were mature, respectful, intelligent, and all around good people. Most of whom I had no idea they were young until they posted their age in the forums. I know most of my sons friends and, while some of them have warts, I never have trouble getting them to pitch in when I'm doing a project around the house and they are here. So your generation has an upside.
but the music yall like sucks ;)
-
Hip hop/rap has its roots in the 70's and 80's anyway.
While the commercialized genre is of course trash (just as all commercialized music is, there's really no point even looking at 'pop-rap'), rap/hip-hop is a natural progression of poetry, which has in its more traditional form been marginalized over the past decades.... rap 'music' is more or less a merging of pure poetry (i.e. no musical accompaniment) what can be more easily considered 'music', which most (who don't listen to rap at least) would say requires to have rhythm, melody and harmony (which not all rap lacks in the first place). It's not my forte but there's no point in ridiculing it, just take it for what it is...
Further, pop culture is always about pushing the cusp of what's acceptable...
It's only natural that what would have 20 years ago been considered risque would today be considered docile and non-threatening, and thus you need to go further to get the same kind of reaction. Even with that considered, I've been in places where the radio station has been changed because the Doors came on, even today (that is, because the music was inappropriate as there were children in the room).
That said, I hate most modern music.
Things change, that's the natural order of things. The same apocalyptic prophecies of the future based on youth culture hash themselves over again every decade.
-
People have been saying that society's going down the drains for the past couple thousand years. I honestly find it very unlikely that is actually is today.
Big difference. The music today is horrible with very few hard to find exceptions, the "Peace Love and Dope" generation had amazing music. And I'm the age that all the new music is aimed towards. (Turning 19 on the 4th).
Whether or not you like music is completely subjective. No piece of music is actually 'bad' (or good, for that matter).
-

Wrong, with a hint of interpretation, you can see that he is either referring to a serial killer, rapist (or both) and using the euphenism of 'butcher' to avoid the censorship of the time.
A'Capella music has always been around
However, I must agree that all of those musicians show great talent. No argument there.
I personally do not dabble much in rap, as most times I cannot identify the words being rapped. On the other hand, when I can, I see that although sometimes it is drivel (which has been published every generation, and don't give me any bullpucky), but on the other hand, it can and does portray the suffering undergone by those living in poor, urban societies.
Do not fear rap or hip-hop because they are new, and still occaisonally experimental music styles. Let the artists have a chance at taking you away into another world, just as those of the 60's, 70's, and 80's did. Rap is poetry read forcefully at its root, just as songs are poetry sung.
All music styles deserve to be appreciated, and truly do have their place in life (even Justin Bieber's, although I'd pound his brain out given the chance, for if you need to pacify large numbers of little girls, nothing beats it). Thrash metal is for when you lift weights, soft rock for slow dancing, and Jazz for tossing back a smile to the old days.
Learn to love it, just like you've learned to love many other styles (Classical is great for when you are going fast, nothing focuses my concentration like a concerto).

this is very true. it is also why i refuse to quit from CAP. it would make it a thousand times easier for me to run my business if i didn't keep my responsibilities within cap, but there are BUNCHES of great, hard working kids in cap.
in the 2008 air show at mcguire afb, we had nearly 2,000 cap members. most of them were cadets. those cadets worked their tulips off during that show.
all of us senior members did whatever we had to do so these kids could still get to enjoy part of the show.
most of us haven't given up.......

I was in CAP for awhile, but the closest one to me is a 45 mile drive and it got to be a bit of a chore. (especially in Austin traffic.)

Learn to love it, just like you've learned to love many other styles (Classical is great for when you are going fast, nothing focuses my concentration like a concerto).

i've not "learned" to love anything in my life. i either do, or i don't. :aok

that sucks....cap has great cadet programs.......
my drive to mcguire afb is about 40 miles.

re-read what i said. i am very open minded. that happens to us when we get old.

I'm surprised this thread went anywhere.
For those of you that have given up on this generation's music, I'd mostly have to agree. Pop makes me want to slam my head into my desk, for the most part. I haven't given up though, there are a few bands that few of we kids have kept sacred.
Like Agalloch, for instance. The style is unique, hard to explain, kinda metal-ish but with a sense of peace. Their lyrics truly put pop to shame, being both clean and having great implicit meaning in every one of their songs.
I'm fond of 'Not Unlike The Waves'.

i'm stuck in the 60's 70's and 80's for music.
right now, at the shop, i listen to talk radio, because there's no music radio stations worth listening to anymore.
gonna get sirius soon.......

Each generation faces it's own demons and each generation overcomes them.
I hate that we label the WW2 generation "The Greatest Generation". It's an insult to them in my eyes. They were just like us and they did what they had to do. That makes it more of an accomplishment.
I've worked with 'troubled teens' for the last 25 years. I have yet to meet a bad kid. I've met some kids who have made bad decisions but that tends to come from the parenting or lack therof.
While doing this job I got a real jaded view of teenagers. Then my own kids wandered through those years. My wife and I got involved in their stuff and lo and behold it looked an awful lot like my teenage years. 99 percent of the parents are doing their job and dealing with their kids. 99 percent of the kids are doing just fine.
Bottom line is the 99 percent doing OK don't make news. It's way to easy to make it doom and gloom. And with the never ending saturation of communication it's easier to make things overly dramatic.
Bottom line is I think most kids are doing just fine and I look forward to raising my youngest now and seeing how he conquers the world.
-
Well obviously I'm a kid. I to slightly agree with this and even blame my self. I even feel now a days kids are so lazy, It's almost like you gotta be fat to be cool.( no offense) Honestly it's hard to see a normal kid in my school. Now a days no kids can even take a joke, they freak out and get violent enough for an OSS (Out of School Suspension). Also I have an A in Language Arts which just shows the education they teach today pretty quick, I'm in 7th grade though so it will improve. Lastly their physical strength is gone, their attitude to be nice. They can't even do hard enough punches if a fight happens. I think it's to much television unless it's the Disney Channel or Discovery. It is though afterall 7th grade for me, the 13 year old girls keep tabs on how much they hate each other in their note books.
I see you guys do care about this genoration and the next. I can't say anymore though because I'm probably to young to even understand what caring really is. Just help the this genoration and the next, with an act of random kindness.

When i was a kid we used to have to walk 15 miles to school uphill in the snow, both ways! Everybody had a job and they worked for free, in fact at the end of the day we came out in debt, and we were glad. We used to play football in the streets and run through glass bare footed because we couldn't afford shoes even though we worked from 5am to 8pm while going to school and maintaining our grades. You wanna talk about fighting, forget about it half the time somebody got killed if not then they both ended up dead! All these ipods and tv's you kids have nowadays to entertain yourselves and you still say you're bored. We used to have to entertain ourselves with dirt if we had if enough money to buy it. If I told my parents I was bored they would beat me until CPS came and then they would beat me too for giving my parents a hard time. You kids don't know how good you have it. :old:
-
Well I'm kinda of a special kid I get entertained VERY EASILY. Plus like when sports we're coming barely anybody signed up they though they we're "to cool" when they can't even walk 5 miles. Especially this young.

It gets worse as you get into highschool. Though I don't know how you see the world and never will, I can tell you that your eyes will open as you get older. There will become a point were you truly see and feel how much the world sucks, and how pointless life can be. Do note I said can be, not is. Maybe it's where you live where the kids are like that. Here in Alaska there aren't too many fat kids (minus the few chubby eskimos here and there). Laziness is of course common, but the attitude, maturity, and intelligence of the majority is sub-par in my mind.
But then again, this is only one opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt. You'll grow up your own way, as did I and (I assume) the rest of the community here. All I can really say is good luck, keep a positive attitude, and for gods sake have your work ethic down before you hit Highschool!

i can introduce you to 3 bad kids if you'd like to come to nj sir.
their a friends kids. his oldest came out good. the other three......i've tried, along with a half dozen other friends.....nothing has worked. now, one is with child, living in camden, job hopping......the next younger is a job hopper, and has been caught several times stealing from his work.....the youngest he thinks is ok, but i've seen the kid treat older people like crap, he drives his car(given to him) like he thinks he's in the fast and furious, and just got a ticket the other day.

my brother and i only actually had to walk 2 miles. if it rained, my grandpop drove us. most of the time he did if it snowed too. it wasn't really that bad.
when i got to senior high, we had to take the bus. we had to walk a half mile to the bus stop. again, if it was raining, grandpop drove us there, and we waited in the car.
nowadays, kids get the bus right in front of their house. i get caught sometimes behind a bus in stratford that picks up one kid, then about 1/4 mile up the road picks another up. kinda ridiculous if ya ask me.....

do schools still have gym class? do they still make you do calisthenics?

Yes & yes, in Pennsylvania, at least, it's a requirement to have gym through your senior year in high school (which is idiotic IMO...)

it's not really that idiotic.
i'm 48. look at our generation. you don't see too many seriously overweight people.
they worked our tulips off in gym class. plus we spent most of our time outside running around.
now a days, it seems that kids don't do much outside, and don't seem to get much exercise in school either.
-
I see plenty of disgustingly overweight people in that age group.
Putting kids in gym class for 40 minutes every other day doesn't make them fit, living fit makes them fit. Eating healthy, getting exercise daily.
Also, I don't see how you could make the case that people would be skinny 30 years later because they had gym in high school.
The obesity problem in this country is not a generational thing, it's a conditional thing- things are too easy and food is disgusting. There's no need to go outside because for the most part you can get entertainment inside. People of all ages are disturbingly fat.
-
My little brother is really fat, but he sits on his arse all day.
I am in decent shape, but I go outside, run around, ride horses and fly airplanes.
It's all about activity level

Overweight is generally defined as having more body fat than is optimally healthy. Being overweight is a common condition, especially where food supplies are plentiful and lifestyles are sedentary. As much as 64% of the United States adult population is considered either overweight or obese, and this percentage has increased over the last four decades.[1]
This is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overweight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overweight) and it does have a citation. It's easy to be fat, and kids not learning healthy habits will literally kill them.

every other day?
we had gym every day of school, with the exception of one marking period. we did calisthenics, they did some sort of sports. to be honest, i hated it, as i've never been that into sports, but i did them anyway. didn't mind the calisthenics though....and believe me when i tell you i am nowhere near the healthy eater that i should be.
my friends kids....his oldest is 26 now....dude's 6'3, and 180. next youngest......5'8 or so, and well over 200. he's 22 now. then there's the 19 year old. 5' 8 or so again,.....nearly 300.......the youngest is 17.....5'6. he is well over 300.
their father was big, but not grossly overweight. their mother is overweight now, but she wasn't before. i know the parents on both sides, and none of them are overweight.......
gym class is important, as it gets the kids up and moving around.

However, in highschool, those who play sports should be exempt from it. Health class also needs to be more in-depth, as just getting that same line of "eat salads, don't do drugs, and go run a mile" gets old. For those of us who wish to enter the medical field, our schools prepare us poorly.

I'm still in high school and I don't want to offend any of you, but in gym class the fat kids, and 98% of the girls will purposely get out of the gym class or will get a NOTE signed by THEIR PARENTS saying they can't run or exercise because of a condition they don't have, and I can day that because they tell me if they really have a condition or not.

Well Eskimo that's just the thing. I live in Alaska, my school has 800 kids 7th and 8th graders. When we have all the 7ths graders go to gym once a month. We do about a mile jog. Their all breathing hard before the 1st lap. Which it takes 6 laps to go a mile on my schools track.

that is no offense to me at all. i know that's what happens. i've said previously that parents are a large part of the problem.

funny Squid works out and gets grumpy when he doesn't.. but his 'gym' class at school is a large joke. Turn em loose with some equipment and grade them for 'participation' which means if a group tosses a ball back and forth for the 40 minutes every other day they get credit.

I feel like I'm surrounded by idiots at school every day. So many of these incompetent wastes of tax dollars attend the school that teachers that have been there for more than a few years (about 99% of the faculty) do not care at all about doing their jobs and educating America's future. Out of the 1000 students I am forced to call classmates, perhaps 35 of them actually about learning and suceeding.
We 35 spend 2 hours out of our 6 hour days in serious and cohesive learning enviornments in AP and Honour's classes with all 35 of us in the same class, while the other 4 are spent seperated in obligatory classes such as foriegn languages and various science classes. In these state mandated classes, perhaps 2 or 3 serious students are present, the rest being a rowdy group composed primarily of moronic under achievers, whom detract from the classes, for those of us who wish to gain all that we can from them, through the constant stream of dribble that manages to escape their mouths until the classrom is alive with vulgarities, racism, and general malice. Teachers seem to have two choices presented to them. They can either waste massive amounts of precious time trying to control the erronous dullards that plague the class, or stop caring, and stop teaching in any sort of coherent fashion. The aforementioned capable academics are then forced to supplement their shoddy lessons with endless hours reviewing the material themselves at home. I understand that this could simply be marginalized as average "studying" as many would do for a big test, but this is more than that. I would go so far as to say that nothing is learned through the teachers, and all the vital information must be extracted from text books and such.
Bah...rant over, for now...I might just PM you for further discussion, Joe. :aok

I gave up on public school.
It got to the point where we weren't doing anything in class, and the teachers tried their hardest to control the class, we would have a test every 2 weeks and hadn't covered any of the material.

what we used to have to do, was stretches, then calisthenics, then whichever sport the coach decided we should be doing.
i sucked at football....go figure...tall skinny dood......sucked at basketball.......about as coordinated as a drunken monkey.....was good at baseball/softball....in fact, i had a tendency to hit the pitchers i didn't like...it was an "accident" i swear.... :devil was great at volleyball, and never played dodgeball. for one year, they did have archery....i did well at that considering i was shooting a k-mart special fiberglass bow.
we did this EVERY day. there were no exceptions. we were graded on our participation. when i was in school, i never lifted, but started when i was about 20.
i'm seriously outta shape now, but i'd have to say that my constant moving/running around/doing SOMETHING has something to do with the fact that i'm now 48, and still wear the same size i did wheni graduated. i'm the only skinny one in the family. i eat junk food, drink way too much soda, and once in awhile grab somethign healthy.......but i'm still a skinny chit. probably always will be.
i believe that this is because all those years of being like that "trained" my body to keep the metabolism up. i know that sounds :noid and it probably is.........

You live in America, man. Ignorance & stupidity are virtues. If you're going to worry about being disappointed, then lower your expectations to fit the bill a bit.
I'm not sure I can get them that low. In my former favorite class, Principles of Engineering, today I was forced to sit and wait no less than 20 minutes of the 55 minutes period for the so-called professional educator to prepare his lesson for the day, something that I feel he is paid to do at home, not during my class time. During these 20 minutes, a painfully ignorant white boy uttered a very prolonged string of gibberish (as in a completely made-up and random series of sounds). Throughout his vocalization, the only real words recognized by the modern English language that he had emplyed were, "white power".

I gave up on public school.
It got to the point where we weren't doing anything in class, and the teachers tried their hardest to control the class, we would have a test every 2 weeks and hadn't covered any of the material.
Precisely what I am talking about.

I'm sure they're just glad to meet another person that can speak proper English.

Haha
Perfect example today, I noticed that the battery on my motorcycle was a little low and could do with a bit of a charge. I went and got my battery charger and extension lead out of my tool room (yes I have a walk in robe dedicated to tools.) hooked the battery charger up and passed the lead in the window to my son to plug in for me. After stalling for an hour and now running short on time I decided that that would be enough charge for now. I went outside and disconected the battery charger only to notice it was cold. I yelled out "Curtis, that power was turned on wasn't it?" to which he replied "No, did you want it on." Its actually been quite some time since I have insulted him but yesterday I had to call him a squealing moron.

if i were you, i'd tell the above to my parents(the teacher part), and let them take it to the school administration.

Believe me, I've complained before. Once a teacher gets tenured in this state, it is damn near impossible to touch them. My English teacher has not written a work sheet or test since day 1 of this school year. She takes all her material from other teachers who publish their work electronically, puts her name on it, and gives them no credit for it. Furthermore, these worksheets and/or tests sometimes correspond to a completely different translation or version of the literary work that we are studying, putting her laziness at the students' expense. A group of about 15 of us complained to the administrative office about what was happeining, and provided corroborating evidence. Within the next few days, my instructor vowed to never again do such a thing. Guess what she has been doing since that time... ;)

I've been out of school for the past, two weeks, this being my third. My mom decided it was a good idea to take me out, as some punk was threatening my life and such at school. The kid is nothing but a giant walking version of a female's lower private extremity. His words hold no water.
I digress. We brought up the problem with the administration, all they did was have us sign a 'no contact contract' where we weren't allowed to speak at them, look at them, or etc. in a 'negative manner'. Because we ALL know a piece of paper will hold back a raging tard. If any of us were to be violate the contract, the offender would be 'dealt with accordingly'. Right.
This has been the final straw for me. Public schools are all worthless now imho. My mother and I are looking into online homeschooling options, haven't had much luck.

this is an area where i feel sorry for you younger people.
public schools used to be decent. they used to give us a decent education, in some semblance of safety. those days are long gone.
the schools i went to, i won't even admit to anymore, as they've slipped that far down the hole.

Agreed, agreed, and agreed (to an extent). My elementary school was an amazing place. Every day I woke up and was eager to get to my classes, as the teachers were able to make them wholesome and, forgive me if I come across as a gigantic nerd, fun. One got all this, and a clean campus, up-to-code buildings, and a various other extravagences. All this, and not one cent of private money was paid. 100% government funded, aside from a PTSA fund raiser here and there.
If I find that things don't improve at this school, I'm going to seriously consider private schooling.

If I could say half the things about my generation, and each of you had a dime for every single thing, you'd all me rich. Seriously though, the other day this "young woman" was using her phone in the middle of class, strictly no phones in our school so what came next was about to happen. Teach saw it, tried to take it away, the girl refused, stuck the phone back down in her pocket and began to use profanity, she got written up. Well around the end of the class things had calmed down. The bell rang, everyone got up to go and as the teach said "everyone have a nice weekend, be safe," the girl turned around, gave him the bird and told him to go eff himself. Then repeatedly yelled in the hallway about how she was unfairly treated.
I'll admit my generation is not the greatest, not by a long shot, but there is more than enough good to go around. I see people holding doors open regularly, helping the elderly take groceries in, going out of their way to help others. And while the music of my generation is nothing but constant filth and violence and sex and drugs and basically everything you used to only be able to find in the big cities or the "boonies," most of the people I'm acquainted with listen to the old rock, old country, the classics like Elvis, Cash, Led Zep, AC/DC.
Every generation had it's misfits,
50's had greasers (teehee)
60's had hippies
70's had it's dopesters
80's had Kevin from Home Alone
90's just kinda had everyone not any certain group
Present day has just bad kids everywhere, mixed in with the good.
What I'm trying to get at here is that every generation has it's batch of misfits, but I think now that internet and instant media is becoming more and more accessible, we just see people from all different groups and not the good ones that are normally in said groups.
I don't appreciate my generation but then again... I don't really know anyone who has appreciated their own, either.

My school has a very VERY divided student base. There are the kids who will excell in life and go on to college and get a good job, then the kids who will go work at McDonald's until they are 40 and eventually pass out in a ditch and wander into the unemployment office. I'm in advanced classes and I don't see a single kid in them that won't be successful when they leave with a Diploma. Then in the elective classes, where the two divisions mingle together, I see new faces almost every time and almost all of them smoke pot or do drugs, mindless sex 24/7 and it makes me realize how the public school system can only do so much. So much of the students lives are out of the reach of public education.
On a side note...
ADHD only started popping up with any severity when parents were scolded for scolding and spanking their children... Corporal punishment should not be illegal, parents can bring the whines as far as this forum, but the principle is always the same, either the kid learns what is right and what is wrong early on, or they don't and you end up with something that could've been avoided. People are too afraid of getting sued...
This makes me almost wanna :cry

... helping the elderly take groceries in...
I didn't know kids could do that anymore. Alaska, heh.
...
80's had Kevin from Home Alone
^^
:rofl :rofl

At my old school, they combined the middle class, and the kids living in the ghetto.
It was about half and half, but you can guess who made the trouble.
My school had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the state, and one of the highest dropout rates.

i know college grads that work at starbucks and i know grade 9 dropouts running successful businesses. don't assume academic success automatically means success afterwords.

because i was quiet, and had only a couple of friends, everyone thought i'd be the garbage man in town.
i run my own repair shop now, whereas one of the friends i had died by drowning in his bathtub...heroine.....and another was high, and got hit by a car. most of the rest that i knew are just workers. couple are local cops.......

It all has to do with how things pan out, but I know that most of the kids divided into the other portion of the student base won't go anywhere because at least 3/4 of them smoke, some pot and some tobacco, drink, text n' drive, have constant sex and do countless other drugs. Now I'm not saying there aren't any outliers in the divisions, I see kids in the bad division who could really have a bright future if they work for it, I see kids in the advanced classes who barely get by and might not get a break in life, who knows how they will end up? But you're right, it doesn't matter, it all has to do with how things unfold.

so what do you figure they have to do with their life to have made something of themselves?
yeah, they probably won't be doctors/lawyers/engineers or even running their own business as a tradesman...but there will be as few from your class that end up as complete losers as there are that end up going really far. the rest will end up fine. "just workers" yes...but hardly stuck in some go nowhere mcjob.

I'm surprised you seem to think that someone with the charisma and confidence required to have copious amounts of sex is going nowhere in life.
Pretty much everything you listed as a fault has the ability to nurture extremely valuable life skills. Some will get something good out of these experiences, and others won't. Some will live, and others will die. Some things you mentioned are a bit harder to see the possible benefit of, but rest assured, it's there. Now whether or not someone will get that benefit is another story...

Does it help my cause to say that they do not have a work ethic, and if it weren't required by law, would not come to school at all. And anyway, I already said that there are outliers, and it just depends on how things pan out.
