I bow to no Earthly king.
I dont recognize a royal anything cept sometimes my wife. And only because she can be a royal pain in the arse.
And thats about as far as I go to recognizing a royal anything unless someone wants to put an emperors crown upon my head.
As I heard someone else say. "Aint my royalty"
That being said. I wish Kate and Billy all the best and a long miserable marriage with lots of kids to drive them crazy. Just like the rest of us.

May I remind you that even though you did revolt against British rule, they have been there to back you up ever since the end of the US Civil War?

You mean liberated ourselves.
Very shrewd move on the part of the British in showing that kind of foresightedness
But we do have to give your credit for it.
Its that whole "Royal" thing.
-
Im pretty sure using the anglo-latin language that the majority of people operate by, Revolt: The uprising of a people against an occupying power as a prelude to revolution. Is the proper term.
And while I could argue so many points that American independence was an inevitablility, the vast majority of Americans never listen to rational argument on the subject of either patriotism or Americas view point on historical fact.
But thats not the point. A jab at the Royal Family which presides over what was once the largest Empire on Earth, and arguably the most recognised and LOVED persons on Earth. Is out of the realms of either ettiquete or taste. Especially the respectful mature members of this board.
-
And I also made the point, that England has been a FRIEND of the USA, since the end of the war of 1812. The USA is inherently a British colony that sought independence, that chose force, rather than political and social moves to independence.
America and Britain should be friends. And there were Americans who did not want seperation from Britain at the time. Had they been prevelent it is more than likely the USA would have a union Jack instead of the stars now.
So... please. Dont have a go at Britain and her Monarchy. Because the Monarchy IS Britain, and Britain IS the Monarchy.

and considering your govt is just as broke as ours, why again, are they wasting all of this money to show this wedding? 'specially when they could put those millions of pounds to better use elsewhere?
The same can be said of the 4th of July parades, which cost billions in military support and man hours. And that happens every year, let alone once every 20 or so.

Britain is our greatest Friend and Ally; one of very few nations that has stood with us through thick and thin, and backed us even when it wasn't politic to do so. Britain is beyond reproach from decent Americans.

Funny how alot of Americans love to insult Europeans and other nations of the world yet no one really cares when they do. Though if members of those other nations insult America at all, those same guys who did the insulting of the other nations get all upset and defensive. This is because adolescence cares greatly what adulthood thinks about it but adulthood could not care less what adolescence thinks about anything.

whelp....i was married once.........both my wife and i wanted the same thing. we had only immediate family at the wedding. so it was my mom, and grand parents, and her parents.
weddings don't need to be big massive overkilled circuses. we had everyone we knew to the reception though.

Just a question and not to be a jerk, but can you Brits tell me the point of the Monarchy?
They don't really have any governing power anymore do they?
Is it just a ceremonial type thing?
Where does all their wealth come from? Are they taxpayer supported?
I don't much care, they seem to enjoy it. Hell if the British want to support that tradition, it's their country.
I'm just wondering what's the point of keeping a designation of "royalty" in a country with a non monarchy government?
-
The Crown is like the USA's Presidential Eagle. You cannot have it without the Ceremonial Crew to back it up. The President is almost identical to the Queen/King of England. All the work is done by subordinates. But all major decisions on any front can be either made, or altered by the Monarch.
-
So the Queen has the power to over rule what ever comes out of Parliament?
I thought the Prime minister was the chief executive.
Guess I don't understand how a constitutional monarchy works.
-

Absolutely not.
In fact, this hasn't been true for a few hundred years now.
-
You know, given the fact that one of the biggest draws of American television is a stupid football game, you guys should really mellow out and just enjoy a good party when you see one.

Oh, this is nonsense. The Monarchy is just a tourist attraction, the only body with any political power in Britain is the House of Commons... the House of Lords even is pretty much just a ceremonial thing anymore.

The Queen is the official Head of State for Britain and the Commonwealth, but even serving in that capacity... I mean, she doesn't act as Head of State.
David Cameron goes to meetings of international leaders, not Elizabeth II.

She is head of state.
And while she does not excercise the rights to do what I listed.
By various acts of parliment during Charles Era, she still retains the right to do so.
And does Barrack Obama do any different? As far as Im aware for almost EVERY SINGLE foreign dignitary or summit. Its Hillary, not himself. That they meet. Barrack only turns up for the big stuff. And while thats in an official standing. His role at home is Ceremonial.
Every major political decision MUST BE signed by HRH The Queen Elizabeth II. She rarely excercises the right of power she is given, and it is just a formality to have on the "perks" list. But she CAN do so.
-

And it would be a political quagmire and a blight on Britain's reputation as a modern democratic country if she did so.
Like I said, even the House of Lords, which legally has just as much power as the House of Commons, is by modern convention expected to simply tip its hat to Britain's elected body. It's a ceremonial thing.
And does Barrack Obama do any different? As far as Im aware for almost EVERY SINGLE foreign dignitary or summit. Its Hillary, not himself. That they meet. Barrack only turns up for the big stuff. And while thats in an official standing. His role at home is Ceremonial.
The President doesn't go to every summit because he has a host of duties domestically, not because he wouldn't have anything to do at the summit, not because he would be out of place there. The Monarchy doesn't effectively do anything.
The President does have a lot of powers which he exercises on a regular basis. He's the commander in chief of the military (not just ceremonially), has not only the right legally but politically to veto bills, appoints non-elected members to government, as well as other things...
These are things that he not only has the right to do, but the President actually does. It's why the presidential election here is so important, as opposed to in other countries like Germany etc. where the president doesn't really have any power except for dissolving Parliament.
-
The Monarchy is Britains image. Its the badge. Disbanding the Monarchy, would be akin to destroying the Statue of Liberty.

I thought it was interesting to see traditions and practices from a country whose history goes back much further than mine. The ladies hats were hilarious though. One more resembled a Reindeer than a woman.
I didn't know there would be a flyover. That was an awesome surprise!

Naa, they do not really have any power no more..its more tradition than anything..The Queen is the commander and Chief of the armed forces who I swore my alleigence too...but she never issues any rules and regulations, but she will sign them off when the top brass make the decisions. The army regualtions are called the Queens regulations, but she never makes them :)
The tax payer pays them, I heard somewhere that it cost each person about 48p per year how true it is, I don't know but when Prince William becomes King, he will get 10 Million GBP a year :D nice eh :D
I guess the biggest reason why we continue to have a high profile royal family is to generator extra income and politcal reasons maybe, like the state visits they do. I think they said about 2 Billion people would have watched the royal wedding. And then you have all the tourism generated from people coming to see the sights etc etc.
In short,
King Charles the 1st tried to get rid of parliment as he wanted to be in full control of the country, as only parliment could introduce new laws etc at the time we were at war with Scotland and King Charles wanted more money to fund the war etc. Eventually civil war broke out and the Parlimentarians beat the royalists, shortley afterwards King Charles tried to start another civil war but lost again, this time it did not end well for him and he was the first and I think the only king to this day to have been excuted. If you look on the clock above horse gaurds there is a black mark at 2 o clock, this is to commemorate the time that King Charles was exectued.
England is full of history and traditions and its good to remember them, When I was in the Army we continued traditions that have been carried on for years and when you look at each Regiments capbadge, they all have a history as to why the capbadge is that design.
For instance the the Royal Gloucestershire and berkshire regiement wore two capbages on their berret, one at the front and one at the rear because during a battle they were completely surrounded and were fighting back to back, 750 men against 10,000 chinese.
"The regiment was unique in the British Army in that it was permitted to wear the United States Distinguished Unit Citation, which it inherited from the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment which was awarded for their defence of Gloster Hill during the Battle of the Imjin River in April 1951 during the Korean War".
-
the monarch is still the ultimate power in the UK, having extensive powers such as;
opening and dissolving parliament,
choosing the prime minister,
declaring war,
forming treaties etc.
parliamentary bills can only become law with the consent of the monarch.
however it has become tradition for the monarch to heed advice on these matters from the parliament or government, because the instant they dont, they will be deposed and a republic formed.
:)
-
Think of it this way....if you took most of the president's ceremonial duties (public appearances, hospital openings, bestowing medals and stuff) and gave them to somebody else, that would be how the monarchy functions. The monarchy is pretty much symbolic, but it's as symbolic as the flag, the monuments in DC and the pledge of allegiance. Removing it would be as much a travesty as removing any of those American symbols, and disrespecting it is just as wrong, even if you happen to be from another country.

She does none of the above,
-

Uh actually she does, but most of her political duties are done under the "advisement" of parliament. She doesn't make the political decisions but it's legally necessary for her to sign off on them.
-
I think most Americans who watched the wedding are caught up in the romanticism of it. I was talking with my Mother yesterday, and she actually got up at 4:00am to watch the wedding live. Her reasons for watching was because she admired Princess Diana and got caught into the whole story. So the royals are now her very own 'Truman show'. Who needs soap opera's anymore?
:)
-
Thanks for the info.
As popular and as much to do as it has generated here in the states, I'd say it is a tradition still respected, even by the American majority.
:salute to the UK, the best Ally we will ever have.

Plawranc I totally understand your love of the culture and tradition. As an American Id rather see the Queen over there than some dude in a turbin. But you gotta understand somethin about us Americans...If somethin we love is destroyed, we get pissed, blow up something of the enemy's, and rebuild what we lost to a better state than what it was before.
The whole idea of bowing to any other human however, doesnt sit well with most of us. Congrats on the whole thing though, best wishes etc.

I was interested enough to catch a few video clips and slideshows that condensed the goings on into a reasonable amount of time. I appreciate a country who respects it's heritage and traditions and keeps them alive with events such as this. Here in the U.S. we just can't do that sort of thing, we might offend someone... :bhead

Good business for the media to get high ratings and sell commercials time. People are such sheep.

Can all you nay-sayers please sod off for a day or so? :P
Anyway, on to what I actually want to say. Regardless of the general retardation/pandering by the media, this event was probably the most complex wedding I've ever heard of, and it went off without a hitch (aside from one cartwheeling member of the clergy). Regardless of how you look at it, you can say that it was a damn impressive ceremony, an excellent piece of organisation and that it produced a nice display of patriotism from the various crowds. So whilst I think the media attention was overblown and ridiculous, at the end of the day I'm pretty impressed by the event itself and happy it went well.
So congrats to the newlyweds, and God save the Queen.
-

As far as I know mostly the prime minister and the senate are in control of the country.

Actually what is really sick is that the media telling us that we are interested, the tool's actually become interested because they think everyone else is interested. Although I think girls actually eat this stuff up, it's like one step up from the worst show on tv, The Bachelor which they love.
