Title: USA Falls to Japan at Women's World Cup
Post by: Flipperk on July 17, 2011, 04:34:47 PM
What an amazing game!! Such a heartbreak for the US to lose because of the penalty kicks.

The US outplayed Japan throughout the entire match and had TWO chances to close the deal but failed to keep Japan capped.

Awesome job to Japan though...excellent team and a finish to be written as one of the closest Finals game in FIFA Women's World Cup history.

I would like to see you run for 120 minutes  :aok

They will be able to kick a little more than just balls...

I'd like to see YOU sprint back and forth kicking a ball for 120 minutes straight  :devil

One HELL of a match!

I would pay to see that :D

That was a great match, kudos to Japan for never giving up. They scored the equalizer at the 117th minute, 3 minutes to go in the match. That is tenacity. They deserved this bit of good news

They don't sprint for 120  :rofl, maybe a quick sprint here and there but mainly jogging around for 120 minutes with some standing around.

Don't say football(american) is not the same because of there are "breaks". Three words, no huddle offense.

My heart sank.  :ahand

Japan did it, what can we say.  :salute

Our ladies did almost everything for a victory.  I am proud of them.  We will get our championship again in the future.  :aok

 :salute to both teams!

It was a great match.  Both sides should be proud.  The sportsmanship was also top notch.  I think it was a great example of how to play sports.

Keep it up ladies!

This may be the cleanest and most "beautiful" world cup i've ever seen for both sides.

I think I can never watch mens soccer again.

glad I got to see the teams I wanted for the finals... wining for the 1st spot is just a bonus to me.

Congrats to japan... this could be like 2010 New Orleans Saints moment for them (healing and all).

The commentator made a comment along the longs of 'this is the miracle on ice of soccer!'

Definitely a much needed win for their nation as a whole  :aok

Would be nice if the mens league could learn from this match an quit all the stupid play acting every time someone gets near them. All the falling and ankle grabbing makes them look like a bunch of kids. Can't say women because at least they play on even when they get clipped. The women played a great game!  What I can't figure out is why wasn't this carried live in the USA? I had to get a play by play from my daughter in Germany online.

It was. It was on ESPN (on TV as well as live streaming from their website) and perhaps other sports networks.

I watched it live anyhow.

Soccer is the most endurance heavy sport there is, because there are no breaks. Sad to see them lose, especially with all the chances. Oh well, there is always next year.

Was a very great game to watch, just extremely frustrating to watch the U.S. lose in the finals of another major tournament (Men losing the Gold Cup to Mexico a short while back).  :bhead Just when things are looking up in the US for Football.

The Japanese need to win every once in a while.   ;)

They both played an entertaining game, I'm not a big soccer fan but it was fun to watch.

:salute Japan Women's Soccer Team!  and a job well done to the US gals.   :)

"Miracle on Ice on grass" is right. This is fairytale stuff. WHAT a finish, what a sports story.

Kudos to the US women for holding their dignity after the PKs,  :salute

Although im not a soccer fan i enjoyed it. USA was lucky near the end it wasnt 4-2.

I will say Im not a fan of how they end the game pn penalty kicks. Kind of anti-climax. Same as winning by a field goal in the NFL at the last second.

I don't really follow soccer, but I thought this was a great game (even if my home team did lose).  Completely missing the goal in a penalty kick, when playing at the highest level of the sport, is ridiculous.  She knew it, too.  Japan deserves the win.

Running up and down a field for 120 minutes....that isn't as hard as people make it out to be. I referee high school and college lacrosse games and that sport is constant up and down sprints with very little jogging at all. I have no cartilage in my knees from playing college football back when turf was crap indoor/outdoor carpet so I pay for it the next couple of days between games but its worth it.

As for a real sport it comes down to TWO games on the planet that incorporate everything...American Football and Lacrosse. Speed, power, agility, explosive power, MENTAL toughness, field awareness, etc...I could go on and on but girls or boys kick ball is just that...KICK BALL!

I give it until before the end of the week that somebody, somewhere, demands radiation testing for any signs of athleticly advantageous mutations or contaminates on their entire team.

Was a great game, Japan's win was a well deserved surprise IMO.

now I've always looked at the women's game as a non event but after watching our game against france our women also deserved to go through because they let in a very late equaliser when the manager spurned all her subs to defend the lead.

Tactically, physically and a couple of them had real skill on the ball.   Penalties are there to decide a winner otherwise you could play all day.   Heartbreaking for the losers but euphoria for the winners.   Drama tension pressure  makes it exciting!!

Now if our men played with half the spirit the English ladies did we would be world champions much more often  ;)

Kudos to all of them.

Foolishness on your analysis. I watched Lacross several times and it is interesting.  there is NO comparison for the sprinting between both sports.  Soccer is much more faster sprints than LaCrosse.  You have no idea what your talking about.

I played Football, Ice Hockey and Soccer much of my life and only Ice Hockey is on par with the physical requirements of soccer.  Football is conditioning and 'dexterity' IMO to be top notch athlete.

Congrats to Japan a well needed morale booster. Also congrats to team USA for barely getting in the tournament and almost going all the way. Last congrats to Hope Solo, for putting sexy back into goalkeeping. It's not just for fat kids anymore. :D

Yeah I played hockey and that was one of the most intensive of any sports I played in middle school/highchool. Football seemed to be a bit more of a balance between bulking up and cardio. The pads do make a big difference lugging them around really gets your shoulders and neck a lot bigger.

Playing football, I never felt any weight difference, it could be attributed to the adrenaline rush that I always got wearing pads.

I'd put hockey, American football, and rugby as a toss up for most physically demanding sport.  I'd say rugby probably has the edge, but then again hockey's speed leads to (IMO) more spectacular collisions, and of course getting blindsided by a 300lb football player can't be much fun, either.  All three sports have their moments, I suppose.  The point is, athletes in these sports must routinely endure much more than burning lungs.

Soccer really doesn't compare to these three.  It belongs in a conversation about sports like cycling and track and field.

I agree with that.  Soccer is a athletically demanding sport, but different dynamics than the other.  It should not be part of the same conversation.
