I hope it's not a buggy and laggy mess Oblivion was but it's from Bethesda and like Obsidian, aren't known for releasing bug free games.

I hope its really something improved.

All the screenshots ive seen of the game look like Oblivion re-skinned and with a minimal graphic engine upgrade.

Im sorry but:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItQOo28Kd_U

The graphics are upgraded from Oblivion's when it comes to their glossiness and crisp image quality which is completely expected of any game made today. Oblivion is what? 5 or 6 years old now.

Pay attention to the actual graphic objects in the game. The houses are the same, the NPCs use the same models (their skins are updated to new graphics), the voices are the same audio/acting quality as those found in oblivion/fallout2/etc: bland, empty, scripted.

Honestly, I think all they did was recycle the oblivion engine, upped its graphics crispness and 'modded' oblivion into skyrim. Thats how it looks and feels like.

Even the damn gameplay is the same. The same retarded raise-hand, glow-hand, lame spell cast animation.

I expected a new game not a rehash of an old one.

Amazon pre-order arrived 1.5 hours ago.  Installing it now.  But I've never had a Steam-required game before.  The installation is currently estimated for 3 hours, thanks to something its slowly downloading.  I've done some searching, and it looks like Steam is required to play, outside of downloading a crack.  I just hope its easy to completely unload Steam when I'm not playing Skyrim.  I'll allow Steam to exist while I'm playing Skyrim, but any other time its not allowed to run, or else I uninstall and look for alternative measures which I assume exist but can't be talked about here.

Also this better get fixed real damn fast, no excuse for such sloppiness:  http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1257169-horizontal-vs-vertical-mouse-sensitivity

Runs great on my PC at High settings and max draw distance. Game looks great, game plays great, only 4 hours into the game so far and I've already saw so much. Haven't had any issues except for the age old "moonwalking" NPCs. It's not as bad as in Oblivion or Fallout, but it's still there. A couple of clipping into walls but nothing major. Other than that, the game is a solid 9.5/10.

I can't wait till some of the mods come out. I expect and really want a realism mod like in previous Bethesda games. More damage, food, water, sleep. Worth the $60.

AWESOME game.  :aok

My god.. Skyrim's user interface is some of worst I've ever used, even MUDs have a better user interface. To get anywhere on the interface, you have to go through at least one unnecessary menu, like when opening inventory - for some reason you have to choose the category first. The skills screen is... well... massive with very little actual information on the screen, while it could be much more informative. The UI designer sure has gone great lenghts to make it a PROCESS to find what you need to know (or do).

I wonder how the modding community is going to adjust this, because this seems much more difficult than resizing the fonts that were too big in Oblivion.

It is because it is intended for a game machine.

I'll wait 6 months or a year before picking up any Bethesda game in order to give the mod community time to fix the game machine BS.

I don't think the interface is very difficult to navigate or over tedious. The skills is a cool idea but I think it could be scaled down a bit.

no, you don't need to have steam to play :) my steam bugged on my skyrim as I unlocked it and it keeps giving me "try again later" message, so i just go to the directory and play the game from there, no need for steam at all :) but since sometimes friends talk to me i added it as a "non steam game" hehe people will think i got a pirate copy. darn you Gabe Newell!

My favorite moment so far would be trying to fight a giant then getting uppercutted to 2x the nearby mountain's height.

Playing as a 2Handed Warrior Nord/Archer and it's loads of fun. Gonna be a battle Mage next or a dual wielding thief.
One complaint is that you can't really play as an "evil" champion without being a psychopath killer either. But it's not just in Skyrim, it's in almost every RPG.

I'll be a maniacal killer on my second play through, hehe.
Once again, amazing job by Bethesda, can't wait for more mods to come out.

The giant punt hundreds of feet in the air almost had me in tears from laughter.  My other favorite moment was killing a bear, hearing footsteps running behind me, drawing my bow to turn and face the new threat, seeing it was someone called 'frightened victim' or somesuch, and holding fire, but when she started talking the game released the arrow and I shot her in the face...

Another good one was I was fighting a dragon in the middle of a forest, the dragon breathed fire at a farm during the course of the battle, out of nowhere this woman runs out of the farm area and starts attacking me.  I'm like, 'Lady, do you not see the giant firebreathing lizard over there?  Prioritize, dammit!!!'

Truly an excellent game.  A little bit of 'more of the same' disease from Oblivion, but it is improved and different.  I'm not super thrilled with how they did some of the magic effects and soforth.  I really miss 'detect life' being able to go on an item...  But I can see why they did it.

Open world games are some of my favorites by far, and the Elder Scrolls are one of the most 'open' out there.  It's definitely cut off my AH addiction other than FSO. :)

I specifically got the PC version so when the modders do their thing, I can get more out of it.  Can't wait to see what people come up with.

Wiley.

I have no idea what this game is like but it looks cool. I just wish rather than always starting out with a stick and leather armor, it was more like Hitman where you have all the tools you need, you just have to figure out the best way to do the killing. Thats why I like AH, it gives you everything you need the first day you play. The talent you have to provide.

It's a RPG that you can play in either 1st or 3rd person. Unlike most RPGs, which have a main storyline that you have to stick to, Skyrim doesn't force you to, meaning you can do whatever quest you want from the beginning. The maps are huge, there's no invisible barrier blocking you from going off the "main path". If you ever played Fallout 3/New Vegas, it's more or less the same thing.

If you want to, there's also a cheat command where you can add every single item you want in the game. There's no level requirements, so you can be totally pimped out at level 1. But I wouldn't do it, because it pretty much ruins the game if you can kill everything with one hit.

I had all but one grab their armor and weapons.  The one that didn't grab his armor and weapons after I freed him was the bravest of the lot and rushed head long into a group of Imperials while the rest of us decided this was a good time to make our escape.  The last thing I saw as I ran out of the door with the other prisoners was Jurgen in the middle of a sea of Imperial soldiers, with just his fists flying furiously.  Imagine our collective surprise once we made it outside of the keep to find Jurgen waiting for us near the campfire.

Morrowind was 10x better than Oblivion....

But I feel like this game is more like Morrowind so I give it a 7 out of 10...now don't get me wrong bethesda games are my favorite but...

I have already beaten the main questline I am the archmage at the college and the leader of the thieves guild.  The main quest was was too short and frankly not nearly as interesting as morrowind was.
But most of the side quests have made up for the main.

Belial, do you know if that famous texture mod for morrowing (better looking graphics and such) is finished? I want to buy morrowind and that would be a nice info. never played morrowind before myself, people say the combat system is worst then ablovion but that the storyline is great and such... and i became a fan of elder scrolls when i played oblivion and started reading all kinds of books about the history, so many things to learn

I don't know about graphical mods but if you can stomach 1999 graphics Morrowind is a hell of a game, frankly I thought oblivion sucked compared to it.

So if you can handle it your in for a treat.

Morrowind's story was really great and immersive with the dark caves and such, and running into the deadric gods...foolish mortal do you know with whom you speak?  :D

amde a quick test on recording with fraps... it killed my fps (even with my low settings graphics) and youtube just ruined the quality BADLY, i can't believe I wasted so much time uploading to youtube just to get this horrible quality up there, how do people post those REAL HD videos?
... anyway here it is if anyone feels like watching... keep in mind this was a test video so there is nothing epic there. one question tho... are the dragons weaker when they first rise? it seems that it is way more challenging to battle a dragon that you find randomly in the land then when you get it when it first rises. I'm not sure...

+1. The environment is no doubt one of the best I have ever seen in a game.

If Skyrim had "true" first person POV, I would worship Bethesda.

By "true" first person, I mean like Battlefield 3. Where you can see your arms when running and sprinting, or even your feet. Or have your shadows appear when you go into First Person, instead of the generic "camera zooms in, body disappears".

And if the NPCs movement were smoothed out and the AI were like most FPSs, I would dress up as a Nord and walk around in public.

Still a 9.5/10.  :aok

Eh, I find that once you get the a sneak level of 40+, you can literally hide 5 steps away from an enemy and not have them see you. I'll kill a bandit in a room and everyone else would rush there, then I would just wait until they aren't "alerted", then kill them one by one.

I got pretty annoyed by it and didn't want to ruin the game for me that now, I just put on heavy armor, took up Two Handed Weapons and just bum rush a room. I actually get killed now if I'm not careful.  :D

Blocking and timing power attacks is a lot more fun, hehe.

Still waiting on the realism mod. Increasing difficulty just seems to increase enemies' health, not your damage/their damage.

If it's anything like Oblivion, the loot you find in dungeons etc. will likely be worth lots more.

Though you don't really need it if you're good. I already have some 40,000 gold and countless
riches more worth in saved loot in my house, not to mention 500+ lockpicks  :D

Actually, it's based of Fallout 3's difficulty settings, not Oblivion's. In Skyrim/FO3, once you enter a dungeon/area, it's locked to whatever level you were at, so if you enter and decide to leave, when you come back (say 5 levels later), everything inside will still be level 1, but you are now stronger.

In Oblivion, everything was locked to whatever level you were. So if you were low level, all the loot was crap, if you were high level, all the loot was god like.

I have no problems with the game right now, but could it be better? Sure.
Thank god for mods, right?

Oh yea, I check out Skyrim Nexus everyday, but most of I dont like or they're still pretty buggy. I kinda want to finish my first play through mods free though.

I can't play games knowing already what's going to happen, obviously Skyrim has a lot of choices, but most are minor, I haven't finished the game yet, but the largest decision I found so far is choosing Imperial or Stormcloak. I choose Imperial, so Stormcloak will be next. Mods help me get through some of the receptive stuff like dungeons and what not.

Pfft.  Lightweight.  He blacked out after only 40 hours.  He also obviously didn't know that changing position once in a while is critical to avoid necrosis of the limbs.  No mention of a diaper either.  I be he wasted several minutes in the bathroom.

Kids?  Learn from this guy's mistakes.  This is why you don't use those energy drinks and junk food to stay up.  If you just keep a nice, steady alcohol buzz going and eat good things instead of junk food, you can game much longer than noobsauce up there...

Still really enjoying this game.  Sneak/backstab does appear to be brokenly powerful, just got my smithing up to 100% at the end of last night.  I'm making a point of not looking for where anything is on this playthrough, as I ruined Oblivion by reading the wikis online.  I think I agree Morrowind is probably the best of the series, Oblivion was a bit of a letdown, but I quite like Skyrim.  Some of the systems are a bit too simplistic perhaps, but the world really is well constructed IMO.  Haven't seen any noticable dungeon reuse, and in a game this size, that's pretty impressive.

I'm really in no hurry to finish this game.  Normally I have an irresistable urge to blow through the main quest, but I really like how natural and logical a lot of the quest setups are.

You get way better quality by using "Force Lossless RGB capture" and "Full-Size", because those settings barely hurt performance at all compared to using the lower quality settings, so they are very much worth it.  Also I like to set a custom FPS of 15-24 if my computer can't keep a steady 30 FPS while capturing.  The loss of FPS won't be noticed nearly as much as lower quality capture settings will be noticed.

I'm making a point of not looking for where anything is on this playthrough, as I ruined Oblivion by reading the wikis online.

Doing the same thing here.  I want to be surprised and not know all the min/maxing things.  And I'm trying to clear towns of quests before I move on, while gradually moving the main quest forwards.

Singe player only. If you ever played Fallout 3/New Vegas, it's almost the same thing. Easily modded, giant sand box world, lots of freedom to what choices you can choose. The main quest alone is probably 10 hours, but the massive amounts of side quests (some a repetitive, but almost all is like a mini-RPG in itself), along with the amount of mods that is put out by the community means you can have upwards of 200+ hours of gameplay. I myself spent over 150 hours on Fallout 3.

Hmm...  Lots of reanimated dead things, lots of medeival hack/stab bloodshed.  Necromancers abound, lots of bloody dungeons with gore covered torture equipment in them.  If you so desire, you can wipe out entire villages single handedly.  Thievery, assassination, politics...

No bad language that I can think of though.  Oh, but there are some drinking and drug references, probably want to pass on it.

Might not be a good idea. There's blood (not Left 4 Dead blood, but still blood), and there's some minor cussing ("Hell, damn"). There is one or two "revealing" female NPCs, but at 7 years old, I thought girls had cooties.  :P So if your son is anything like me, then probably not a big deal.

Besides that, just your typical dragons, undead, monsters, knights, vampires and werewolves. Nothing I'm sure he can't handle.

EDIT: Almost forgot, you might want to play the intro part for him first, or skip it, because there is decapitation. And don't let him play a 2 Handed Warrior because you can decapitate enemies as well (if you take a perk).  :devil

No bad language, well, at least no real obscene or vulgar language.  Violence though can be somewhat graphic with decapitations and some of the other violent finishing moves.  Personally, I think 7 is a little too young for this game but it's perfect for the dad.

The bad language so far has amounted to "damn!" or similar curses and not vulgar or obscene in anyway.  Basically, PG language and there is no nudity unless you download a nude mod.

20 Hours in and I haven't seen any sexual things besides the mentioned one or two revealing outfits. I'm sure "Hell" and "Damn" isn't that big of a deal at 7, he's going to hear it sooner or later anyway, you just have to keep constantly remind him that it's wrong and vulgar. Only thing I would worry about is some of the more violent part of the game.

I'm experiencing something along these lines right now.  Found this after a search, I'm trying #2 solution atm:  http://qbeukes.blogspot.com/2011/11/skyrim-launcher-doesnt-work-launcher.html

Edit:  It worked.  It did a small download after checking integrity and once that was done, the game ran.  Before my problem was when I clicked "Play" nothing happened except the Skyrim launcher would flicker out and back in.  It also reset my graphical settings, which wasn't a problem because I used the auto-suggested settings anyways.

Are you trying to use the 4gig mod by modifying the .exe to use more than 2gigs?  If so that is the problem.  Yesterday's patch was put out by Steam to stop people from modifying the .exe, don't know why they did but if you try to modify the .exe again so the game will use more than 2gigs it will crash the game.  However, there is good news in that someone made another 4gig mod that bypasses the Steam check, just go to Skyrim Nexus and download the new Skyrim 4gig mod.

I prefer to play games like this in the vanilla form at least once. By the time I get around to starting it again there's been enough time for nice and stable mods to come out that play nicely with whatever rev the game has been patched to.  So for me, that "patch" didn't break anything or affect me whatsoever.

This particular mod doesn't change the game in any fashion, it's actually more of bug fix than anything.  This allows the game to use more than 2gigs of RAM which fixes a lot of crashing problems people were having.

The only mods I like to use are teh ones that improve the eye candy with the improved textures and I tend to stay away from game play changing mods.

Uninstall Skyrim and afterwards in your Steam game library, make sure you are displaying all games and then click on Skyrim to download it again.  You should get the .exe file back.

Before though, make sure that it's not already present.  Go to your program folder(x86) and then scroll down to the Steam folder, click on the steamapps folder and then on the common folder.  Scroll down until you find Skyrim and open it up.  The .exe should be in that folder.

Ok so i deleted some files to force the verify game integrity to redownload those stuff, I was watching the skyrim folder as it was under the download process and I noticed that the TESV.exe appeared on the middle of the download but disapeared when the download ended wich means steam deleted it or something like that.
So I did it again but I grabbed the .exe before it went poof and pasted a copy on the desktop.

All happy I was and then I took the .exe back to the Skyrim folder and launched it... a message popped up saying "this is not a valid Win32 executable"

ok can someone upload the .exe in like... megaupload for me? I would apreciate it so much... just the plain normal TESV.exe I would call you lord or god (your choice) before you name (as in god jhon or lord james) for ever here in the bbs when talking to you or about you. If your PC can run it, definitely get the PC version. The dragline are better and the amount of mods put out (over 1,000 after the first 2 weeks) is so much more worth it. I cannot wait until the Mod Kit comes out.

I had a kill here last night.  Come around the corner and there were two bandits...

The first comes running up and says something to the effect of 'You're in the wrong place bud' and I lop his leg off and slash down his chest...  then the girl says, 'Do your worst!' and I come back in the same motion w/ a backhand and her head goes flying into the air and bounces across the groud.  It was absolutely hillarious.

The graphics and animations look outstanding.

Too bad EverQuest and the immersion it brought was developed in a time before the technical capabilities of this game's graphics.  That would've been one sick MMORPG.  (Saying it in past tense because the cherry of MMORPGs has been broken and it will never be the same...)

Geforce 8800 Gtx
Amd athlon 64 dual core 6400+ 3.21Ghz

Its not a super computer like something could be made rightnow.. today, but it sure isnt a xbox or ps3 in stats either, i can run any game, on full any time i want still. Save skyrim, its not the FPS, its not the loading, it's just strange odd stutters for no reason.

Ill wait till they update it more, maby they can make the port more stable so it can run decently on computers, untill then its going to sit on the shelf along with duke forever, deux ex and a entire slew of other dog crap games made recently and in the past.

 :salute

P.S. i have a huge problem with them bragging about a new engine, that honestly..looks just like all the rest. And is dumbed down far greater then even other versions were. Remember walking from a mountian INTO town in morrowind? please tell me how a new engine "hah" running on better systems under performs whatever "enhancements" they made from past engines.

World sizes have plumited ,look it up. Animations have been elimited time and time again "remember when moving forward, backwards, side to side had different effects based on whatever weapons were being used? DUH a long sword is good for slicing and stabbing!"

Game features have been time and time again cute away, leaving  a hollow shell of what previous games use to have.

But what bothers me most is how skyrim and fallout3/NV feel dang near exactly the same.

k, i feel better now.

Its also important to note how many lines of code were missing or left out of skyrim, in the .ini's "maby even still"

Entire system specific information doesn't exsist like it did in other elder scroll games, people have already begun "reincorperating" some of these lines of code turning some things on and off with often great effect.

Bought it for PC.  Very pretty game.

Buggy as hell.

If I had known it was going to be as buggy as it is, I would have waited 6 months and bought it after it got patched half a dozen times and it would have been half the price to boot.

I haven't experienced any bugs yet, a lot of people say their shadows look weird, mine looks fine unless I turn off AA.

Closest thing to a bug I found was:

You can Shout neutral/friendly NPCs off cliffs or stairs and kill them without consequences. It was funny as hell the first time I realized I could do it.
And the death animation against Giants, where you fly into the air higher than the mountains around you.

All these "bugs" are hilarious to me, and I would hate to see them get "fixed".

I've had crashes to desktop among other things.  But the worst is the Dragons who fly backwards, get stuck in mid air, and actually fly/run away constantly always staying too far away to engage (all while flying backwards).

I've seen none of these bugs, but I've got a 4 year old computer running things on medium graphics settings, so the worst I deal with is the changing area lag where the game loads a new area up.  Couple seconds of lag and freeze up is OK with me.  I understand sometimes you cross on a supercrossrode of zones and it lags constantly for a few minutes... but the rest of the game play is enough that I'm not squeaking.  I have had modern xbox games go into the oldschool 'slowdown' mode when too much is going on, so this doesn't really bother me.

Again, all in all a great game.

I got the patch last night. So far I haven't seen the issues that have been making everyone whine and complain. The only oddity was two CTD (which I had experienced before) and a crazy snow texture on trees. The texture was fixed by shutting down the game and starting up again, and I'm using one of the snow texture mods so am not sure if it was patch related or a hiccup with the modded texture. Oh, and I installed the latest GForce beta driver to turn on abient occlusion to see what it was like - have to run it in "performace" mode since "quality" mode put my frame rates in the single digits at times.

In any case, I guess I've been lucky so far...
Title: Re: SKYRIM!
Post by: Wiley on December 01, 2011, 01:16:24 PM
I've run into a couple CTD's as well, and I've also had the occasional trouble with a person involved with a quest not being where he should be or whatnot.  Restarting the game fixed those ones.  The most annoying glitch I had was I was supposed to meet a guy at a ruin, and if I fast traveled to the ruin, he never would show up.  I had to walk (not run) with him from where I talked with him to the ruin, which took about 15-20 minutes.  I have a sneaking suspicion the bandit I killed walking with him was killing him on the way there, or something along those lines.

Given the size and open-endedness of the game, I have been willing to forgive the few foibles I've seen.

The most annoying thing I've seen though I don't know if it's a glitch or not, is dragons that don't seem to want to fight.  They make a pass or two, then run off.  Maybe they've been watching how it goes in AH and figure that's what they're supposed to do.   :D

There are dragons who will not attack unless provoked. Maybe they were attacking nearby monsters? Only had one occasion where a "neutral" dragon flew by me. He didn't like it when I stuck an arrow in his foot.  :devil

Bear in mind, I wasn't patched when I saw this.

The scenario was, I'd gone to talk to a guy on a mountain.  I came out the door from inside the mountain,  Patrolling random dragon shows up.  I would hit him with an arrow or two, he would land and breathe on me a couple times, it was on.  Then he'd do one of two things.  He'd either go find some other monsters to fight and basically work his way away from me, which I've seen before and think it's working as intended.  The other thing he'd do is he would spiral climb over the mountain I was on until he was wee tiny, then eventually he would either vanish going up or come straight down and seemingly vanish behind the mountain.  He didn't appear to be landing, just vanishing once he was out of sight, and the combat music would stop.

I probably reloaded from the door 20 times, just trying to figure out what was going on with it.

Not a big deal, just struck me as odd.  I love how they fight with everything they can see.

The one thing that really strikes me as awesome with this game is the fact that if you shoot an arrow straight up, it will come back down and land, sticking in the ground.  It will also hit stuff on its way down, not just up.  That's the kind of projectile modeling that I find lacking in many, many games.

Wiley.
Title: Re: SKYRIM!

The Dragons also seem to have a pre-programed area they'll patrol.  I've had a few times where the dragon goes over me, and I shoot him a few times... it'll try and pull him into my area, but it's almost like a wall where he'll start to fly back into his area...  Once I follow him a second or two, it normally will end up attacking without problem in an area that it was probably designed to be hitting.

I haven't played many single player games since discovering multi-player games over a decade ago, but my brother was raving about Skyrim so I picked it up.

I thought the graphics and the story were intense and I was immediately sucked in. I played about 3 hours doing the first dungeon and whatnot, completely oblivious to the fact that I had to save my progress. Well walking out of the first dungeon I managed to get stuck in a wall and the last auto save point was so far behind me I was super discouraged and didn't play again for a week. Then I repeated my previous footsteps and made it to the second town. I find a giant camp as a lvl 4 and decide after giving this wolf the run around a cliff (without being hit) that I could probably do the same to this near by giant. F5 before every encounter, door, new area (even though it auto saves, I still do), buying/selling, or leveling up.

Always save - golden rule of singe player games.

I restarted a character as a High Elf battle Mage because for my first play through, I screwed up so many perks and was a mess of a character totally. Still not repaying because it's too frigging sweet using new types of weapons and spells and watching the different kill animations.

I see huge boxes labeled Skyrim in just about every electronics store I walk into. It is obviously a game that seems to be quite popular, but I have never heard of it before a few weeks ago. What's it about?  :headscratch:

It is a stand alone game based on a fictional world where elves, orcs, humans, cat race called Khajiits are all normal populace. Add that to a land where breathtaking terrain filled with walking dead, dragons and others evils is available on your PC with almost a size to rival some MMOs. I put countless hours into this game and I have barely scratched it's surface.

By far, the best game I've seen in a 4+ years for anyone interested in that kind of environment or has an interest in old weapons.

Personally, I like to use the bow; nothing is more pleasing than nailing some moron at an extreme distance, silently and without using any magicka. It is too bad the damage output is so low, even with smithing, crafting and poison.

edit: The one thing I do not like about the game is the leveling system. It should be based on getting things accomplished, not repetition of skills. It reminds me of the macros I made when I used to play MMOs and learned skills (like Everquest); they aren't fun and don't serve any purpose other than being a time sink.

I'm very successful with my archer only elf. The sneak perks, plus the bow perks and a couple of magicall bow perks items makes it over deadly.

Post by: Delirium on December 15, 2011, 11:45:11 AM
A pair of daggers is always more effective for sneak damage. Spells also deal more damage than the bow can. The only way you can get the bow damage up to comparable levels if you have alchemy, smithing, and enchanting up to ridiculous levels. Again, to get those skills up to ridiculous levels requires monotonous effort of boring tasks to improve them.

Yeah but you have to get close. Even in 'dungeons' I get knock out the subbies from far, and get the big dude before he reaches me ... Even when he actually sees me. The ' stagger' perk with the bow stops him enough for me to relaunch an arrow. Rinse repeat. Level 19, not a problem yet, I mean not mich different than my lvl 20 pure mage. My sword guy lvl 15 is struggling more as he has to get close and it gets hairy vs several mages.

You level up by leveling up your skills, as you don't get XP from kills or quests.

I do like how both sides (Imperial and Rebel) have their dark and dirt side, so there is no real choice of being the good or bad guy as both sides have their good and bad.  The Stormcloaks (rebels) are fighting for their own way of life but are racists and only have a "Nord Only" philosophy, while the Imperials are a more open society but fascists at heart.

Yeah since you have to use skills to kill thing. Like archery, one handed, two handed, armor skills, ect...

Interesting how they can motivate you to level up when there is no Player v Player incentive (e.g. I want to level up to be better than other players). Very interesting indeed. Can you "beat" the game, or is it endless?
Title: Re: SKYRIM!

Started a new character, Breton, war hammer, good bow and mage skills. Joined the stormcloaks early, sacked whiterun. We have the imperials on the run now. I'm just over lvl 10 and really starting to crank.

The warhammer is an orc version with a flee enchantment on it, so anything under lvl 7 that takes a hit runs. Lets me shoot a few with the bow, switch to the hammer, lay a few strokes, then switch back to bow or mage skills for cleanup.

3 major points I love about skyrim

A No matter what side you choose (or no side, which is a choice) its not as simple as black/white, good vs evil.

B You can quest, or not quest, your choice, there is so much you "can" do that doing quests is not essential to having a good game.

C There will be a world of mods out for it shortly, I think already over 1k mods out there.
Its the gift that keeps on giving, get tired of it, change it.
I have not modded mine yet, its still fresh, but nice to know I can when I'm ready to.
The map is huge, I've got loads of hours into it and I don't think I've really explored 1/4 of it.

Of course, there are many quests (at least 500 from what I've seen), with 100+ hours of gameplay. There is the main quest/story line which involves a war against dragons, and you can complete the whole thing in maybe 10-15 hours. But there are tons more quests available. These include small ones, like dungeon clearing, acquiring an item, or killing a certain someone, to big ones, like the civil war between Imperials and Stormcloaks, or joining a secret guild/group.

The game-world itself is massive, even though it only takes 30 minutes to walk from one side to the other, there's over 100+ hours of content packed in between. Not to mention there are multiple ways of playing your character, and different races means there are some race specific quests, which encourages replay with different styles/races. There are 10 races.

Also, there are player made mods. These can range from small graphic improvements to a complete game overhaul. http://skyrimnexus.com/ (http://skyrimnexus.com/)
The amount of gameplay you'll get from these mods are massive, I've already clocked 300+ hours with Fallout 3 (made by the same company, same design, different settings). I expect to hit at least 400 hours at the rate I' going right now with Skyrim.

More or less endless as kilo2 said, you will eventually cap all your skills and stop advancing your character, but it's just such a large open world, it'll take quite some time to go everywhere and do everything.  I've been through the main quest and the civil war on one side once, and have started another character for another playthrough.  I'm quite impressed that I'm having quite a different experience because I made a point of not following the same groove I did for the first character, and I'm running into all kinds of different things, even in some of the same areas from the first playthrough.

Between how it's designed and the possibility for player mods, I believe it's going to have a buttload of replay value.  I find one of the hardest things to do with the elder scrolls games though, is not to break it.  On my first playthrough, I went sneaky assassin type.  With the way some parts of the game work, sneak/backstab/daggers/archery is pretty overpowered.  I'm playing through as pretty much a pure mage on my second time through, and it feels like, 'oh, now I'm actually playing the game instead of oneshotting everything.'

I've always been a sucker for open world sandbox games, and the elder scrolls/fallout series' are very much to my liking.  You can cross the world in about half an hour of walking, but it's just so chock full of stuff, and the larger dungeons don't feel recycled like they do in so many games.

Wiley.

Great game....I was heavy into Oblivion, that's one of the very few games that would drag me away from AH....Skyrim is even better....

the mods are touchy some will break your game, so read ALL the comments before picking a mod, in Oblivion I ran around 100 mods...I did mod Skyrim at first but they are unstable...as of yet, or just don't look good.

it seems to me they took all the best mods made for Oblivion and put them into Skyrim.

I've only done one character so far.  I'm a Nord Heavy Ninja...  2 Handed weapons, Heavy Armor, Sneak & lockpicking and mastering blacksmithing... everything a good Ninja should know. :)

I've gotten my heavy armor perked to where it doesn't weigh anything and my sneak perked to where my armor doesn't make noise.  My sword perked to where I can basically 1 hit crit nearly anything I've run across in the game.  I'm level 31 currently, and have basically followed a linear pattern out of the first area, doing quests as they come along, exploring entire areas.

I've joined a cult of cannibals, become a warewolf, a member of the Thieves Guild and a member of the Dark Brotherhood, I've joined the Storm Cloak rebellion, and been named Thane of three cities with another two titles in close works...

That being said, I've only seen about 1/3rd of the map, and only cleared maybe 1/2 of the dungeons found in that 1/3rd I've cleared.

If you own a console, I might suggest renting it first to see if you like it, but if you're going to buy and have a computer that runs AH with pretty much full detail, I'd get the PC version simply for the mods.

The modding community hasn't even got the tools released yet to really get going, they can only do basic, basic stuff.  I can't wait to see what people come up with.

Just my $0.02.

Well I got sucked in. Now at level 52. Think I got most of the quests notched up.

Character is a Wood Elf.

Bow is at 92, but Im only using the crit shots, and maxed out at over draw. Took the zoom in function too, and the hunter perk, when I ran out of arrows at the wrong time.

Went with a partial mager. Like the destruction (fire) thats at like 86 now.

Wanted a character though to forge my own crap. So thats 100, and all perks taking for all armor. Now wandering around in Dragon armor light. Usnig the Rose Staff for my demon. That was a kewl little quest.

Also have Enchantment to 100. Took the right side path and nothing in the left side.

ANyway so far Im the Arch Mage, Leader of the brotherhood, and thieves guild. Just joined ulfric, and am thane of most cities. Have to bump up the AI a bit though or it gets boring at higher ranks. I can take a Dragon out in about 4-5 hits. So unless theres an army against me, getting kinda dull. Still exploring, but am looking to mod this game.

I have several mods in FONV. There host on Nexus if you want to check em out, there under the account Floatsup. The liquor mod was my best creation. So Im definitly gonna mod this.
Anywat kewl game, and thinknig of my next character. Probable gonna do a thief from the start. With duel weilding.

Anyway I'll try to get a shot of my char.

amazing game. . .

for light armor, the nightingale armor is better if you are 42 or higher (its leveled) and actually hits the armor cap. The big reason to level smithing is for the deadric bow - but you can use the arcane enchanter to get one, even if its not going to be legendary.

As it is now, on my 42 kitty-cat archer - I have the shroudedhood with the krosis helm (they stack), +205 bow damage bracers, and a legendary deadric bow with the soul steal enchant (what better way to fill your soul gems!) and it does 147 base damage, pretty sweet stuff.

But if you want to really go with overpowered, train conjuration up.  At 100, you get the twin souls perk, and you drop 2 dremora lords, sit back and drink coffee and watch them destroy everything.

Sorta prefer the sneaky killer for the fun, but running into a room full of enemies and dropping two lords is pretty fun too.

I picked it up about 3 weeks ago. Stunning game.

- Its kind of sad to see how badly he guilds have fallen apart since Oblivion. The mages guild is gone. the fighters guild is almost gone. the theives guild was torn apart by a civil war. and the brotherhood is on its last legs.  There really is no signs of the guilds we knew and loved from oblivion except for in books of their past glory.

-The mage college heavely dissapointed me. I went with an imperial (kratos) build like i did in oblivion.  I decided i'd give magic a try, and when i heard about the college decided i'd go there. When i had this "college" in mind, i was thinking of some harry potter-hogwarts style of missions. Where you have actual classes that you'd go too(one for each magic class). and that they'd give you assignments and such like gathering incrediants that would help you learn more magic.

But no, INSTEAD. they suck you into this storyline to save the college from destruction, and just pretty much pushes you right into it.

In short, i showed up to learn magic. Im suddenly pushed into this "Save the college!" storyline. then after its done, their suddenly like "your now arch-mage!" and the whole time im wondering whats going on, Because i haven't learned **** from that college, and yet im suddenly arch-mage the top magic caster in the school? Only thing i learned from the college was how to cast a lessar ward LOL.

-Horse physics need fixed. I wish they were more along the lines of RDR's horse controls.

-Im willing to bet that the Next elder scrolls game will be all out war with the empire and the admeri dominion.

-The dragons tend to become very easy to kill once you learn their weakness. For example, a 4 sec burst of magic fire can drop a blood dragons health from 100% to 0%.  Dragons just did not feel like much of a challenge. I had more trouble with the giants and mammoths than i did the dragons.

-Also with dragons, their starting to get very annoying with their spawning. it seems everytime i fast travel, they spawn for a fight. Ive had 5 spawn in dawnstar, 2 spawn outside solitude. and even had one spawn IN windhelm. when i fast traveled.

The game is fun and addicting. Ive completed the civil war quest (legion) and the main dragon storyline.Along with the brotherhood and theives guild storylines. and mage. Currently am lvl 32. Still so much more to discover <S>

I downloaded a couple mods now, one that makes the dragons different colors, a nude one that actually looks great, the no more blocky faces and hires textures for all races.....

Hmmm...  Well I don't actually have the duel wield perk.  But I am able to equip one in each hand with no problem.  The paralyze enchantment on each blade is really effective against most bad guys.

thats weird It wouldn't let me duel wield them...maybe im not strong enough....I think I read that if you get strong enough you can duel wield the two handed weapons....

I haven't really up my stamina much at all.

Did you happen to grab dragonbane while you still had the chance before it became a stolen item?

I got it. :aok

good man.

If you didnt grab it during the temple recovery mission, than it becomes owned by the blades, and the only way to receive it legit without it being considered stolen is by doing the blades mission where you must slaughter paarthunax.

So far, Chillrend and the Ebony blade make their return from oblivion to skyrim. Along with some of the special deadra weapons.

Also, a cool little easter egg:

You can meet your actual character from oblivion, in skyrim. If you guys remember the shivering isles expansion, The oblivion hero from IV becomes sheogorath in the end.

You can meet sheogorath in Skyrim. he's part of the "mind of madness" questline. in which the reward is wabbajack.

Sheogorath gives subtle hints that he is the character from IV.like how he  "Inherited" the job, and how he likes "martin septim" the most.

Theres many Real Life lore in skyrim. Like the headless horseman can be seen at dawn riding to a cemetary located outside solitude.

Also theres alot of king arthur references.

Outside whiterun is a pond. which a skeleton hand is holding a sword out the water. this is a reference to how king arthur received xcalibur.

Outside one of the mines, is a sword dug into a pile of rocks, With a skeleton that looks like its trying to pull the sword from the stone.

There is a staff thats named after the king arthurs wizard (Forget his name).

If you guys haven't seen this, you need to get it. Do a quick search for "TESV Acceleration Layer - SKSE Plugin". It's totall worth it and will boost your FPS. Mine in Markarth went from 14-16 to 25-30. I'm running Ultra everything and also use the ENBSeries mod for better lighting and "mood" effects.

Got it, but don't use it.  My double enchanted Blades swords Fire/Paralyze are more useful.  My character is level 43 and primarily a mage, sword fighting is just a hobby I recently started.  When I fight a dragon I am usually using magic.

Was wondering why I haven't seen any dragons in a while and then realized I've done hardly anything in the main quest. Been messing around in Riften and am still a werewolf too. Werewolf lot less effective that I would have thought, usually get killed pretty quickly if I transform. It is handy for traveling to new places though, wolfman can run pretty fast. Now I gotta finish the companions thing because I'd like to be cured, and the thieves one also since I'm in pretty deep there too.

And then everytime I go to try and clean up up a quest someone passes me a note or whatever and I've got something else to do. Exhausting.

Fun tho.

the 1 time the werewolf transformation has saved my arse, was when i went into this mind looking for bandits, and got bounced by 4 trolls. All i had on me was 2 daggers, so i transformed and fought it out.

Sucks you cant feed off the flesh of EVERYTHING you kill, only humans. Im trying to get hiricines ring tho, so i can transform whenever i want.

Trolls are weaksauce...  My Epic Elven Greatsword (forged myself) with a Fire Enchantment pwns most badguys in 1 to 2 hits.  Trolls go down very quick with fire... (I read it in a book!).  I was running along the road and came upon a tower, so I decided to explore it, and was rushed by 4 trolls.  I thought to myself, "Oh crap"...  then I dragonbreathed them and did a sidestep attack that damages all targets it.  Imediately went into crit kills before any of them were able to hit.

I am a bit disappointed in the crit animation for non-human characters.  It seems off, and nowhere near as bloody.

Yea i didnt have destruction magic at that point. Only the flames, and my magicka was so low that i could rly only get a 3 sec burst out. wouldnt of saved me from 4 trolls.

I like the bear longsword animation. When your guy spins around, and just slices the bear in the mouth. would of been cooler tho if he had gone on the way through. slicing the bear down the middle.

I started out just trying to do whatever I came upon, and got sidetracked off the main quest, but stumble on it through sidequests doing other things for other people.  So the whole game is kind of unfolding at once... I'm probably only half through everything I've started, but I'm in the middle of absolutely everything.  It's going to be an epic climax!

You can get one Katana from a rack in Delphine's secret room.  I found 6 more on a rack tucked away in a side room in the old Blades fortress with the big wall mural.

Nice, I haven't seen any katanas yet. I went back on the main quest line. Here be dragons.
katanas and samurai armor is more of "the blades"style. u can get katanas from blades members, and you get the samurai armor from their temple.

So far i believe their are 2 unique katanas.

DRAGONBANE: a katana that can be found during the main dragon questline.it gains a 10pt damage boost against dragons, and otherwise has  a shock damage. You can acheive it by ether.
1. grabbing it as soon as you enter the blades temple. it will be in a room on a table to the left of the entrance. what i did.
2. completeing the optional blades mission of slaying paarthemix.
3. stealing it, if you didnt grab it before.

If you grab it as soon as you enter the temple, its your to own. if not, you have to ether steal it, or slay the greybeards dragon leader, paarthemix. in order to get it legit.

EBONY BLADE: The ebony blade returns once more in a TES game. some may reconize its name and effects  from oblivion, or morrorwind. it is a deadric artifact, which this time around takes the form of a giant two-handed katana.
It has a health draining bonus, And also grows stronger from "Deceit". meaning if you slay followers/anyone who trusts you, it strengths the blade.
It can be attained by:
In whiterun, listen around for rumors by asking the woman at the bannered mare. She will mention something about the jarls son being distant. after this, talk to the jarl himself. This will open the questline to retrieve the blade. Its rather easy to do. the hardest thing being pick-pocketing a key off ether the jarl or his steward.

I've been fast traveling between Whiterun and Markarth to swap items between my houses. I've been exploring a lot lately (hardly any fast travel), cleared many dungeons, and haven't seen a dragon except one sleeping in front of a Word Wall. Haven't even seen or heard any flying around in the wild for a very long time.

I have not been doing any main story quests, past becoming Archmage and doing the Greybeards stuff.

Usually they start showing up in force after you meet the greybeards leader (paarthimux). Not every dragon you see will fight you tho. Alduin will show up occasionally and just circle above you to observe. You can also witness him ressurecting dragons at their burial sites from certain view points.

When i was fast traveling between whiterun and windhelm to switch out my stuff, i had like 6 dragons spawn when i went to windhelm. one even spawned IN the city, which caused a giant uproar.  :uhoh

Yep, I've seen all that; had dragons everywhere for the longest time (even watched one from the top of a cliff as it attacked bunnies, deer and mudcrabs), had about 15 dragon souls stored up for when I stumbled across another Word Wall. I'm just saying I haven't seen ANY dragons for a very long time.

Can one of you post a video of your mage character fighting a mob (using magic only)?

Ive seen many videos in youtube of this game and while it is visually improved magic-wise over oblivion I still see the same old bethesda brand copy and paste approach. It seems from the videos that every spell has the same animations and effect but with a different color & damage type. That..is so freakin' lame :(

That shouldn't be. I know fire and ice spells might look the same with their cone of fire/ice, but lightning is different. As you go higher up in the spell levels, you can either launch fireballs, icicles, or lightning bolts.

The ice spike spell is particularly lethal. Once you land one spike, it tends to slow down the target so he cannot effectively dodge the rest of them. The other nice thing about it is that it doesn't affect a large area, so you don't kill off your minions.

Speaking of minions, nothing is better than using 'Dead Thrall' and bringing vampires back from the dead; instant 'win' button.

Haven't really used any magic yet except clairvoyance and healing. Swords and arrows seem more effective for now. Easier too. That's one of the fun things in the game, you can go do whatever you like and not bother with the other stuff.

Eventually I'll get to it; the only time I regretted not knowing any is when I accidentally killed Lydia. Would have been nice to bring her back to life. That ice troll was trapped on some rocks though so I had to let her die. I guess I can use Uthgerd for bait now, but I figure I have to do a decent bit of mourning for poor old Lydia first.

Magic is a bit trickier than melee for the simple fact, you need to get it right the first time or you get overwhelmed and often the casters don't have the armor to deflect or absorb an attack.

I don't like the melee system much in Skyrim, far too often I swing outside the distance of my weapons so I prefer magic and bows.

The Frost dragon killed 2 guards and that sword-to-the-chest begger guy before i was able to bring him down, everytime i hit him with dragonrend, He'd just land ontop of the meadhall out of reach, So i had to keep switching to bow  :furious
Thankfully he eff'ed up and landed infront of it in which me and like half the town pummeled it to death. The skeleton is still pretty much hanging out right infront of the mead hall.

What do you have to do to take a screen shot. Mine arent working.

Im on my 4th companion/sucker now. Its the EROL chick from the eating people quest. I'm gonna mod her when I get the chance and throw a pirate patch on her. I'm awiting the tools now. I got a small team to build the dwemer salt mine. Quests and all. Should be a 4 month project. If I get sucked into it, will probable take a break from AH for the time.

got my char to level 56, and think I found every area. Character is just to leet to play at normal mode though. Almost sad really, next build though is gonna be a nasty dual weilding dagger weilder. This was my first play through, and definitly enjoyed the eye candy, still wish it was multiplayer though. I mean realistically without multiplayers (people) the game just dies out for me.

Lovin the nice Ebony armor though. That stuff looks great enchanted.

Anyway, Happy New Year.

If it's on Steam, default is F-12 to take a SS through steam.  (My second pic is from Steam)

Print Screen and then copy/paste into MSpaint works for single shots.

I've had FRAPs for years now and my first SS was taken off of a fraps recording I did of a cinematic kill.

LOL.. I married Mjoll too.  Interesting thing I didn't know.. when you say 'we can part ways'.. that just sends the housecarl  (You're the Thane ) back to whichever house they were aligned with.  WARNING..  I think they peddle whatever gear you had them carrying or use, because when you see them back at the house, they're outfitted as when they were assigned to you. I've lost a couple sets of plated steel armor and some killer staffs that way...

I'm into the dark brotherhood string now.. not real comfy with being an assassin, but it only took about 6 missions before it got REAL interesting...

Arrows to the knee
Dragons
Fus Ro Dah
Companions = Luggage Holder
Kill moves
No gravity physics
Killing a chicken = 1st degree murder
Spider horse - climbing 90 degrees slopes like cake
Jumping off a mountain into a river and landing a perfect 10
Jumping onto a wheelbarrow and killing yourself
Spawning 10,000 cabbages on the Throat of the World

Ok got the game with steam's discount offer (yay!).

Overall I like it but there are two things that really bug me:

1- The magic system is really not well integrated.

The left/right hand thing forcing you to constantly stop the game, swap spells, suffer the 2 or 3 second delay after swap for the game to somehow figure out that you are indeed clicking the mouse to FIRE the new spells... ugh.

Final Fantasy suffered such an interface until their developers came up with a system to replace it..which worked flawlessly in FFXI (MMO). Bethesda should take a look at these things.

2- Game makes me sick. Literally. This is something that is bethesda-specific. Its the way they make the avatar move and the world scroll by in all their games (fallout/elder scrolls). Its like you're floating an inch above the ground slewing around the place not walking/jogging. The sprint animation/movement oth is brilliant.  If they would integrate the sprint movement on walk/jog and make distant objects not have such a strong bloom effect (no, graphic settings cant change it) it would be perfect imo. Perhaps someday a mod will make this. Until that happens I'll have to play with some alcohol in me blood to get through it.

The good:

1- Im happy to see archery is actually viable in this game. In Oblivion it was almost useless. At level 6 I slew a mammoth with just bow and arrow XD.

2- zombies! waahahaha...

I get a kick out of how you find a barrel of tomatoes, potatoes, or apples in an old sealed off dungeon.

On an xbox I'm up to lvl 40 as an assassin khat with 100 sneak and smithing. I've got the ancient shrouded armor upgraded and a legendary elf helmet. As a bowman it's pretty easy to pick off people. Just now getting into enchanting at level 43 for that skill. You can have a whole enchanting party after collecting stuff for awhile. Can also make a lot of money enchanting stuff you find but it's hard to sell it all.

Have yet to buy a house. Still living in the abandoned shack. Have completed the Dark Brotherhood and Bard quests and a whole bunch of other quests and misc stuff. Still never have gotten but a couple of steps into the main story line where you go to that tower to help defend against a dragon.

Have yet to see a dragon. Going to do the thieves guild stuff next. Not sure yet about the companions or mage school.

Once you beat the brotherhood missions, You can use the sanctuary as a safehouse. All the containers are safe.

The theives guild aswell. they will let you use the nightingale hall. Its a bit warndown tho since its an ancient ruin.

The mages college gives you the best housing if you dont want to BUY a house: The mages dorm. If you want a better place to store your stuff, i'd go there first.

Just complete the Mage College quest series and you become Arch-Mage and get the Arch-Mage quarters which are equipped with an Alchemy station, Enchanting station and a crap load of Alchemy ingredients (including your very own ingredient garden).

Pretty much.

Personally the mages-college was a dissapointment to me. I came there to learn magic, I get stuck saving the college, then suddenly im arch-mage. and by the time all that was done, i STILL had not learned a single thing from that college except a lesser-ward.  :bhead

Oh I agree.  The Mage College quest line is a serious turd.  But the discussion was free housing, of which the Mage College offers a nice option.  Better then an abandoned shack.

Better then an abandoned shack.

The nice thing about my old abandoned shack is that I can warp right there just in front of the door. All I use is the storage stuff. Just have to get used to a couple of dead bodies in the house is all.

The new Dark Brotherhood lair is completely upgraded but I just have gone there for routine contracts. Yeah I know I could sleep or store stuff there. Also with the lover's bonus now there is no real need to sleep or find a mate.

Probably need to work on alchemy sometime. I've got a whole barrel full of ingredients collecting from nearly the start of the game.

Question?  Which is the better platform to get this game on?  I have a PS3, but I generally use my PC for gaming.  What are the differences between them?  Any gameplay diff?

Well, PC if you think it can run it of course. The graphics and modding give the PC an edge.

Rumor has it tho that SCEA may just let Bethesda release the Creation Kit for skyrim on ps3, as part of playstation+ subscribers.

Its not a rumor. Bethesda is going to release the creation kit this month. PC only of course.

Gaidin: PC. If your system can run it, get the PC version. Believe it or not, skyrim isnt that demanding. I'm running it at max graphic settings in a quad core amd 2.8ghz with a GT240 vid card and 4 gigs ram. A friend of mine runs it at low settings in a dual core amd 1.8ghz, 2 gigs ram with a GT260.

The difference between high and low graphic settings is hardly noticeable however. Of course there is a difference but its not like dragons look choppy or cartoonish. Its mostly anti-aliasing visual and texture decoration in objects that is lost.

PC version of the game lets you add insane amount of mods and best of all, you can keymap the game to your likings. I havent played skyrim on a console but i have played Fallout 3 on both systems and its just irritating to be locked into a gamepad control set when you have SO many things to do and manage in the game. Heck, inventory management itself is hell using a gamepad.

... and on a PC you can use the multiplayer mod ;)

I know about the kit being released in january. The rumor is SCEA may allow it to be used on PSN. Meaning ps3 users will be able to download mods onto their ps3's.

Don't get it for the PS3.  The PS3's architecture leads to some very significant problems as your save game file expands and gets bigger.  It just doesn't have enough virtual memory to handle it.  Once you get ~80 hours in to the game the save game bloat will crash your game constantly on a PS3.

Have not had any problems with it on an xbox but no modding. :(

However, it's nice playing on a 60" Sony flatscreen with stereo surround though :D

Anyone around or past lvl 50?

First char was level 54 when I created my new bad arse. I just dumped it cause I had to turn up the settings to max difficulty. Then it was hard. So I created a new char that Im leveling now. But playing hard from the start. Sleep, food, bad guys are tough as nails. So more slower play now. Much more challeging though. I made a cat char. And not wasting any perks either.

I'll be modding a huge salt mine/dwemer salt production facilty with the aid of 3 other people when we get the creation kit. I have a 3d modler to boot, so we can make dwemer evaporators.

Keep u posted.

I wouldn't give Bethesda/TES so much credit.

A shiv (possibly from the Romani word chivomengro, "knife"[1]) is a slang term for any sharp or pointed implement used as a knife-like weapon. However, the word in practical usage is frequently used when referring to an improvised bladed weapon. Shivs are commonly made by inmates in prisons across the world. A shiv can be anything from a glass shard with fabric wrapped around one end to form a handle, to a razorblade stuck in the end of a toothbrush. Synonyms include shank and chib (from Scottish slang, as exemplified in the novel Trainspotting, "chib" was originally a name for a blunt weapon such as a baseball bat or tree branch). These terms, along with "shiv", can be used either as a noun or a transitive verb, referring to the weapon or the act of attacking with such a weapon respectively.

Indeed, Shiv and Shank are interchangeable, normally it's a gererational thing.  I hear more older folks refer to it as a shiv, I hear the younger generation call it a shank.  Personally, I thought Shanking was what you did with a shiv...

At the end, the guards will frame you for murders, When your given the option choose to go quietly. You'll  Be locked in the jail Mine. There you can talk to a guy with the nickname "unlucky".Do his little miniquest, and you get one.

My best golf swing was when I hung my clubs on a hook in the garage, where they stayed for 5 years before I sold them.  My quality of life skyrocketed after that.

Started  another nord warrior.  This time leaning towards stormcloak, but really working on smithing to improve the weapons instead of relying on' luck of the loot' for lethal stuff.

I still bring up a round or two of my lvl 47 guy to keep him in the save game rotation.   May go see if I can eradicate that thief-backing family in Riften..

finished the stealth character - level 50-something, did all the quests.  Made a Breton mage and to be frank magic is pretty overpowered.  For one thing, you can power-level it, which is massive.  then take Conjuration to 100, get the twin-souls, get the dremora-lords, drop 2 of them and assist with your lighting bolts (Destruction) or whatever.  I miss the stealth stuff, but if I ever really need to go stealthy, I have muffle and invisibility (illusion) . . .dragonskin armor (alteration) has an 80% reduction in damage which is the max you can get with any armor anyway - so basically, you can do anything the other class' can do.

my build is illution to silent casting (yes, magic does double damage in stealth too), destruction to expert (master level stuff has too much of a ramp-up to be useful imo), conjuration to max, and maxed out alteration.  With the 30% reduction from magic from alteration, the 25% you get from the gift of mara, and the 25% from Breton blood - I have an 80% magic damage reduction off the bat - after I get enchanting to 100, I will make me some nice robes and gloves and boots that have magica, magica regen and a little fire and ice damage reduction. . . and you can easily become immune to magic and almost immune to physical damage.

the first 10 levels are tough. . .

I'm lv 38/39 mage, similar except I haven't got my conjuration up yet.  Working on it now.  It seems to do very well, but I have a feeling around lv50 magic may run into a bit of trouble as far as the crowd control stuff and damage goes.  Maybe I'm wrong though.  I just notice my relative power with destruction magic seems to be going down a bit the higher I get.

Slowly but surely im starting to piece the plotline all together concerning the Importance of the Empire, the Threat of the Thalmor, And the Reasoning behind the stormcloaks.

And i must say, Bethesda are masters at creating a deep storyline. Nothing is ever 100% clear. Sometimes, You'll complete an action, and still be left wondering "was that really the best choice..?"

Im started to grow a little bit of sympathy for the stormcloaks after learning about the markath incident. Ulfric is still an ego-tistic arse tho.

Ah, being a Nord, I don't particularly like the Forsworn, especially after they tried to kill me several times just for walking to Markath, and one of their crazy agents almost killed an innocent woman right infront of me. (I saw the knife just in time and was in perfect position and just smashed his face in with my shield and then gutted him.  Very lucky I was almost overloaded and she looked like a merchant.)

After going through the quest to find out who was behind that I decided I wasn't going to play the game of prisoners and just beat that orc feller into a pitiful green pulp.  Walked in on the King of the Forsworn, decided he was one of the branches of the roots of my problems and promptly beat him to death with my bare Nordic fists while shouting fire at him.

Killed him, stole his key, and walked out a free man with a pardon from the Silver Bloods and a nice little +smithing ring.

I just got done with that mission. I helped them all escape. Mainly because i was unsure how to get my precious blade's items back. But afterwords, i followed them to the cave they were at, and promply slew them all.

The forsworn are a sensitive topic in Skyrim. In all rights, they ARE the rightful rulers of the Reach. they WERE there first.

BUT, they are mostly deadra worshipers. and despise the Aedra divines, and all those who believe in them. And deadra worshipers cannot be aloud to spread their influence. therefore the Forsworn cannot be aloud to control the reach.

Im finishing up things in markath before i return to windhelm. Its an interesting city and im partly enjoying my stay. But something about it...the location, the atmosphere, just makes me think their's some ancient evil lieing dormant deep under the city.

And knowing the Dwemer, there probably is.  :uhoh

Well I have 3 characters all in mid 30's level. I've won both sides of the civil war (things start to go sour if Ulfric wins though) I've had one character play though the throat of the world quests, is trying to hammer out a truce to stop the fighting.

I'm ticked that the Thalmor have zero time or patience for another high elf, or imperial.
In fact I'm about ready to go Rambo on all of the Thalmor period.

Tried bringing 1 character up as pure mage, but it takes a bit more forethought and planning.

Loving working my smith/enchanting skills up till I can make Dragonscale light armor with dual enchantments on each piece.

Fav mods, essential horses, unlimited Amulets, and no perk pereq's.

Yes the horses are a bit overmodded in Skyrim, they will go places that a mountain goat would think twice about.  As to the Amulets, in theory, a person should be able to wear 8 rings and hang as many amulets and necklaces around their neck that they are willing to put up with (Mr T style)

But mods imo won't really kick off till they release the creation kit. Then look out.

As for not seeing dragons, look for dragon resting spots on your hud. Normally they are at the top of a mountain, have a resident dragon, and a word wall. Many you'll have to work though another dungeon to reach, or be seriously good at riding in rough terrain.

Once you have cleared them, give them a week and fast travel back, good chance another dragon has taken up residence.

Also you can use console commands in PC version to spawn dragons. PM me if you need help.

I don't even want to think about how many hours I've put into Skyrim in the last 3 weeks.

But its fun  :)

I was hopping up a mountain to try and get a sweet screenshot when a dragon popped up and started harrasing me. I forced it down to a perch on the mountain cliff edge and LOL'd my butt off when, upon a dual cast Ice Storm spell, it pushed the dragon off the cliff. It plunged to the bottom and died. took me 10 minutes to climb down to collect its bones  :devil

The thing I'm looking forward to is when my character gets to the afterlife, there's going to be a long lineup of daedra who think they have dibs on his soul for eternity.  Can't wait to see who gets it.

Hmm...  That's kind of an interesting idea for a mod.

If I have any complaints about the game, it would have to be the traps. With the exception of 1 trap type, they are all easily avoided with the big designs and buttons placed on the floor.

The one trap I thought was nice was the floor that raises up to shove you into spikes in the ceiling.

Yep, would be nice if they were more subtle until your character gains some experience in stealth and if they had a perk for trap-detection or trap-disarming.

Unrelated... I've got around 200 hours in the game and have yet to travel SE toward Riften. I like walking everywhere and keep getting sidetracked by a new cave or misc quest. I recently installed the iHUD mod which allows you to toggle the compas HUD and the aiming crosshair; makes adventuring more...adventurous.  :D

Just the one perk, Daedric bow around 83 dmg with archery at 71 or so. Pretty effective. With the enchantments boosts I can get a mammoth in 3-4 shots, not that I ever remember to put the stupid jewelry on.

I've been doing sword & shield but the archery stuff is fun once the bow starts hitting hard enough.

I just got my Archery up to 100 and got the Bullseye perk. I've got an Ebony bow enchanted with fire, but can't remember and haven't looked lately to see the base damage. I've sniped baddies off of towers and bridges who were hit so hard I never found them. Kind of fun watching them falling off and still on fire, kind of reminds me of watching certain players ride their burning planes to the ground in AH.  :rock

i am at level 40 character....level 76 with bow.   100 smithing 100 sneak    enchanting is only at 80.  I rebuilt my deadric bow base damage is 105 with the appearl upgrades its 186

then of course xxx3 times  with the sneak perk.       I am dropping just about everything with one shot.  I think mamoth took two,  giants are easy one shot kill now.

dargons suck because i cant stay hidden and they take at least two hits if i could, probably more.

My dumbness finaly figured out why some gems enchant and some wont ... i solved that problem quick when i put soul trap on my bow..... lmao could of had enchanting up to 100 easy already.

soul trap on the bow. and transmute makes getting to 100 on enchantig so easy... wish i had figured it out sooner.

I need to try that mod.  I honestly think that the vanilla game dragons are waaaaaay too weak...  In fact, there was one occaision where I came across a random dragon, killed it in short order, then went down the path a little farther and ran into a couple of cave bears that surprised me...  They were on top of me in a flash and very nearly killed me before I got my wits about me...  One dragon should be waaaay more dangerous then a couple of cave bears...

On a side note...  I've parked Skyrim for now...  Was getting a little burned out on it, so I am flying more AH now and will return to Skyrim at a later date.

I will be making a mod that will put you on an adventure to capture a Dragon egg, raise it up and then be able to ride it :x

been messing with "Skyedit" but it is limited in what can be done,(although some people have made great mods with it) so far I am just working on a mod that gives proper weights to all the weapons.

I too have been waiting for the creation kit, meantime have been exploring some alternate characters.

Skyrim nexus has some very good alternate start RP save games.

An Orc with reasonable starting skills and perks (hvy armor, 2 handed,)
A couple of different "thief" starts, one where you join the thieves guild right away.
A couple of very hardcore "poor" starts, one where you are shipwrecked.
And an "Imperial" where you start at lvl 2 fighting a dragon at the whiterun guard tower.

Some of these have the main quest disabled, others don't.

I also recently finally worked though the whole "throat of the world/defeat Alduin" quest.
Was bugged (esbern doesn't talk) trying to hammer out a cease fire so I could capture a dragon at Whiterun)
Finally figured out how to find the stages and worked through it. Pretty nicely done in my opinion overall.

The mods I can't wait to see

A: Single combat with Ulfric, winner becomes High King.

B Dragon as mount for fast travel around Skyrim.

C Declare war against the High Elves ie Thalmor

D Option to remove unwanted quests from Journal on a line by line basis.

To get this quest to work properly, I  had to google this.... but basically, go somewhere NOT on the mountain and use your Elder Scroll.  Then wait 24 in game hours, then travel to the top of the mountain and the quest will go through just fine.

I sat there for 30 minutes waiting for the dragon to land as they just kept flying overhead.  It was very annoying, but this fixed it.

I work with Blender and modeled a dragon I tried to put into Oblivion, it was extremely difficult so I never got it to work properly, I am hoping that I can redo the dragon and get it into Skyrim, but my dragon is more true then skyrim's it has four legs.  I want to make it so a player can turn into the dragon at will. it so much work though with all the animations which to me is the hardest part.

I am also creating something that will make the waters much more dangerous :t   a quick swim will be very precarious

not entirely sure....maybe a smaller version....but I would think that it should come with some disadvantages, such as not being able to get into smaller areas, opening locks, doors ECT ECT

you can conjure a small dragon right now that will fight for ya, so even without the CK you can change the size of anything.(if you pull up the command..you click on your character or anything and type setscale 1 I am taller then anyone now with setscale 1.1 anything bigger makes the animation off)

I cant wait for the CK to come out, I will be using that more then playing the game haha

+1  on the Throat of the World quest.  Good challenge.

LOL on enhancement C...  I snuck back to the Thalmor embassay and slaughtered the guard house with sniper-archer.  May go back to finish off the rest of the house later... probably after I get smithing up to 100 and figure out what the dragon armor and stuff is like..

And cleaning up the journal ( D ) would definitely be nice.

Dragon scale armor is good if you like light. Personally I only have one character that runs heavy, but he's an orc and has the bulk to carry it.

As you said once you get Smithing and enchanting up, things can get interesting.
Start putting double effects on weapons, like Fire damage and soul trap on an ebony bow or daedric bow.

I have a couple of characters that 1 shot Frost trolls and the like. Go into sneak mode and it becomes possible to kill a dragon with 2-3 shots (2-3x damage for undected when arrow hits)

Yes I too have have gone back several times to kill Thalmor, used the console once to get back inside the embassy but the eleven b@#$% is essential, unkillable. Great loot though, and elven armor is light, can carry a load of it.

On my tank I use the steed stone (doubles what you can carry). From my 3 characters, the sneak/archer is the most enjoyable, the mage has to ride solo but it's kind of satisfying getting carried away setting the jungle on fire, my two handed tank is abit too point and click but has his fun moments.

I agree with the thief Archer...I had a warrior up to level 35 and decided to start a new thief...having much more fun...I added the "wars in skyrim" mod....so now wherever I go a battle is going on... I cant fight dragons the "deadly dragons" mod makes them unbeatable by low level characters I have to hide and sneak around, its pretty insane,

I would think it would come in all sizes, small say 4' being average one would see regularly...bigger ones that are truly dangerous say 9-10 feet not as common, but still very much around.

go out deeper in the sea and 30 footers would be the norm :t

got the armature all rigged up, gonna start animating it soon, should be relatively easy :huh as there is no walking motion or any thing major like that, some good bites, a flicking of the tail, a swim motion, a relaxed motion, the death roll.... :uhoh

I just hit 90 in my BSing yesterday.  Got my Daedric getup... need to find one more heart though to make my sword.

Just buy daedric heart at some vendors who sell  ingredients.     Skyrim economics system can be mined so easily. You can also "mine"  "}game{ "the ingredients from any vendor ,daedric hearts will appear at random.       gaming the ingredients  inventory is easy .I will post a quick FAQ if anyone is interested.

I never had a problem getting daeric hearts the proper way. I only use them to build daedric bows tho.  I did mine the giants toes tho . Of course you came game your alchemy to 100 really fast this way.

Sorry, I run vanilla, and don't put in game commands.  I was able to find another heart eventually in my questing for my sword.  Now I need one for my bow.

I'm a little disappointed that Dragon Bone armor is worse than Daedric, but requires 10 more BSing to make (topped out at 101 BS).

I've been using lots of blacksmithing gloves & potions for upgrading the armor though, it's getting badass.

Ya its not game commands.         Its something your already doing just playing the game.  This just speeds it up by playing thru using your perks in speech first and working towards everything with a econmoic mind set...  You can play thru the game slugging it out or you can play the econmics and just buy everything in game.

buy all their ingredients each time you play they replenish each time you restart the game .  make potions and sell them back to same store owner that you bought from or invest in shop in riverwood , his gold goes to 10,000. and he gets it every time you restart game.
you can save then quit to desktop if your in a hurry.

you have to get married inorder to set up a shop....
the ledgers are for theives guild quests

Sorry for the bump, but I just had to.

Played Skyrim today for 5+ hours straight, fought my epic battle with Alduin, and took over the Thieves Guild. One word....WOW. This game is simply amazing. The graphics stunned me, especially in Black Reach. I spent literally two minutes just standing there looking at the scenery. Amazing artwork. I never really played Skyrim for more than an hour or so before, but after today, I'm gonna be hooked on it. The beginning starts out real slow (probably because you can't fast travel everywhere yet), but halfway into the main storyline and it is just EPIC. Steam says 90 hours played, well here's hoping for another 90.

Hmm, what kind of crashes?

I've luckily never had a crash in the game (even with 30+ mods), but I only have a Radeon 5570, which is mediocre for Skyrim. It runs everything on High at 20-30FPS at 1600x900 resolution (my max is 1920x1080). Doesn't lag a lot but it does in outdoor areas where there is a lot of trees. I can't wait till Xmas season for a new GPU. Radeon 6850 is what I'm looking forward to.  :aok

random

and from what I've seen it's not a heating issue.

Sometimes I can play for hours and it not crash. Other times it crashes nearly 10 minutes into the game and will crash constantly.

Hmmm..I'm stumped then.  :frown:

Memory problems? Audio problems maybe? If its the latter, disable sounds in the .ini file (quick google search will tell you how), and play for a bit and see if it crashes. If it does, then it's not audio, if it doesn't, then audio is your problem.

If you want entertainment, read all the threads out there that appeared today; the assumed release date for Dawnguard for the PC and PS3. Some of the the whines on other forums makes make the community in Aces High look like mature mediocrity.

One of them really cracked me up, "I thought gaming was about fulfilling hope and dreams and not about money!"   Are kids really that stupid today they think a gaming company like Bethesda is more akin to 'Make a Wish' foundation and aren't interested in money?   :rofl

122 hours and counting. With only 1 character....so far.   :bolt:

My first character lasted around 300 hours. Now I'm playing a Hunter/Gatherer and am not going to do any quests - just walking around, hunting, trading, and surviving. Using some mods that require eating good food, sleeping and staying warm. I also highly recommend the mod "Project Reality - Climates of Tamriel" (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17802 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17802)) which adds great lighting (ENB-like without the frame rate hit) and tons of weather systems and environmental enhancements.

Shameless plug: try my first-ever mod "NoobEx Constellation Outlines" (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19754 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19754)). It adds outlines to the constellations in the sky and adds a book to your player's inventory.  :D

Yassir .. I started and deleted a dozen or so characters ... one as far up as lvl 20.

Just researchin what does what and finding out that some mods *will* get me the blue screen of death crash no less.
Bag of holding, convenient horses, scenic carriage rides .. seems like anything requiring SKSE
..brings on random crashes 3-4 times in 8hrs play.

Might be a Win XP thing, or might be my video card is gettin dated .. time for upgrade!
Been ogling the GeForce latest toys .. they would fix my wagon :)

Now and then I just get taken away by a moment in game ..
..drawin down on a bull moose Elk with a stunning rack with my bow and arrow,
..perfect shot at what looked like 50yds landed just behind shoulder, right where I was hoping, dropped him like a stone.

I use FOV 55 ..as that is the average eyeball field of view,
..according to Eyeballs, an eye surgeon that I met long ago in AW.
..typed into the command line (tilde key on my keyboard brings it up)
..makes it look very much 'real' :)
None o' this wide angle fish-eye game view for me thx.

And ya .. the climate mod you listed was one of the first, right after Pure Waters and scaleable magic
(my flame and spark spell still do pretty good past lvl 20) ...
..I turned alla dogs into German Shepherds ..cause that's how I roll ..f'rinstance :)
..runnin 37 mods (was up to over 50 mods when game just got too frustrating to play)
.. only one crash to desktop in 12hrs last coupla days :)

Jest too much fun :)

Any of you guys run mods on the PC? I have found a whole new game!

Yup, lots of great mods out there. Steam's workshop is super convenient.

Dance of Death is a must have, lets you adjust the kill moves settings as much as you want.
Bloodier Combat is as cool, name speaks for itself.
Armored Horses makes you feel that more awesome when you go for a ride.
Skyrim's Weather, name speak for itself.

Those are probably some of the best mods out there. I have tons more, total of 40 so far and they all make the game awesome.

My roommate plays this silly game. He is so addicted. He comes home from work and goes straight to playing. I dont see him until he makes food or uses the restroom. He got all excited the other day because he can "make dragon armor" now. :huh

The stench of burning Dragon hangs in cool night air, flames crackling nearby from his scorching attacks during the fight.
Looks like the Watchtower fared poorly.
It was a good fight, we lost only two men .. brave or foolhardy,
they stood in the dragon fire and fought face to face with the monster until they died.

I use resilient dragons ..they are tougher and can killyas ..makes winning the fight that much sweeter.
I also use more dragon loot.
Among many other tweaks :)
Up to over 50 mods now ..just steering clear of any that require SKSE, seems my machine does not play well with that.

'One day in Whiterun ..'

Just a good all around tank in handmade Steel Plate, boosted to Exquisite using blacksmith skills.
Fun to let a dagger wielder just wack on it for awhile boosting heavy armor skill ..then send them to Sovignar in a single blow.

This game is still 60 bucks on Steam.  It's 50 at the local Wal-Mart, but they are out of stock.  Hopefully it will go on sale again soon.

PC is great for modding but you need a pretty decent machine from what I hear. Kinda wish I could do the mods.

However, with the Xbox playing it on a nice quality ~60 inch Sony TV with surround sound is quite fun.

So here's an argument for yall.  Light armor vs. Heavy armor and why?  Personally I prefer light armor mainly for its speed and stealth bonuses.  I sneak alot and when I am forced to fight in close quarters, I have good enough weapons to take on almost anybody.

Really just depends on the character you're playing.

Really just depends on the character you're playing.

Once you hit level 30+, some of the bigger bosses "bandit chief, etc etc" starts whacking you for 1/4 of your HP every hit. Usually it's not a problem with side stepping, or if you play like me, kill all the minions from faraway with a bow and run in and kill the boss. The again, I haven't invested a single perk in the Light Armor category.  :lol I'm a walking glass cannon.

Been runnin a 2h slasher, plate armor 'tank'

Hit points equal stamina (he has a lot of both) ..tried makin up a batch of Elven armor (man that stuff is LIGHT)
. .. Giants and Dragons took big bites in a fight as I could not dodge every attack.

With Steel Plate (Epic) I can stand toe-to-toe and hack 'em down.
(well ..when the Dragon finally goes to ground.. till then I plink him with a Dwarven bow and Elven arrows, and my Shout)

I mean .. giants are 3 hit kills ..usin an Elven Greatsword with steal life enchant I put on it.
I use resilient Dragons mod so they are a good fight... takes awhile to take a Dragon down as it should.
(fought one near Soitude and it killed *everyone* outside the entry area .. LOL)

If you wanna dodge dragons bite attack, keep sidestepping in one direction, then once you reach their wings, sidestep the other way, and repeat. Dragons can't hit you this way (unless you sidestep too far near their wings and they'll use the slam attack). Bash them or FusRoDah them when they begin their breath attack. Almost impossible for a dragon to damage you this way.  :aok

If you up your alchemy, enchanting and blacksmithing to 100, you can craft a pair of leather armor that hits the armor cap around 775. Not to mention the $$$ you make off potions at that level.

I don't think I really cared much for money. My Breezehome has no decorations but who cares? I just use it to hold all my loot in the chest. All my stuff I found, I found it from killing :D. Although I have to say, Nightingale Armor looks frigging sexy and there's no way I'm trading it for leather armor, even if it gives me 775 armor. :)

The post I quoted in the post I'm quoting should be nominated for standing the test of time worse than any other post on these forums.

Anyways, Bethesda can still demand $60 for this game, 7 years later:
