Title: I need another book to read
Post by: Melvin on November 20, 2011, 07:05:24 PM
Like the title says.

I went to lay in bed and read a book when I realized that I was on the last few pages of my current read. (Sea Of Glory: America's Voyage Of Discovery, The U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842/Nathaniel Philbrick)

I'm looking for history. WWII is preferred, but I'll consider just about anything.

No fiction please.

Anyway, help me decide what my next Amazon purchase is going to be.

 :salute

I always suggest 'Dune' by Frank Herbert. Whether you like fiction or not the man hardly touches scifi stuff. Its all about the human condition and potential. He's the Shakespeare of fiction.

Non-fiction I'd suggest 'Stone Age Economics' and 'The Moral Animal'. "The Selfish Gene" is also quite good. These are Anthropology books that are sometimes used as university textbooks... its very, very good.

History related... don't know of any sry.

Try "The Big Show" by Pierre Clostermann - if you can get it

Best

"Goodbye Darkness"  William Manchester.  As powerful a memoir of a WW2 Marine as there is.   "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge would be a very close second.

"Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", "Ship of Ghosts" or "Neptune's Inferno" all by James D. Hornfischer if you prefer USN in the Pacific.  All must haves for a good library on WW2

I've got many more suggestions if you want them, but these I've re-read lately.

If you like WWII read anything from James Hornfischer

Ive read all this books, last one was Neptunes Inferno, IMHO very good.

His " The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" was excellent

Barrett Tillman is also an excellent author, many many good books.

If you like I will go into my Kindle and give you a list of what ive read, they are all good, Just have to give me a day , my Kindle needs recharging.

<EDIT> Dang it Corky, beat me to it    :lol

Check out The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. The memoir of a German soldier fighting the Russians ABCs eventually being captured by the Americans near Berlin after his unit is driven back to Germany by the red army.  It's excellent!

If you can, go to the exchange at your nearest military base.

I know at JBER (Ft.Richardson & Elmendorf new fancy combined base name) they have a really great selection of military literature.

Thanks for the tip, but I think the nearest installation to me is in Missouri. Maybe Ohio or the Dakotas, not sure.

We used to have K.I. Sawyer right up the road. Unfortunately budget cuts forced it's closure and now it is a crime ridden cesspool. I sure do miss those B-52's flying fast and low over the tree tops. They made quite an impression.

Selfridge ANGB would be.

Honestly, "Given Up For Dead" by Bill Sloan was more powerful to read, than Flags Of Our Fathers, which was powerful as well.

"Poles Apart" by George F. Cholewczynski

A hard book to find and can be expensive.  Very much worth reading.  The author now lives in NJ.  Talked with him via e-mail.  A very intelligent man.   :aok

Hellcat: the F6F in World War II (1979) by Barrett Tillman.

This is a fantastic book about probably THE most important fighter on the Allied side during WW2.  Superb illustrations/pictures and some fantastic interviews as well.  Tillman has written a number of great aviation books, but this was by far my favorite non fiction work he has done.

I have a PDF copy you can borrow if you wish, shoot me a PM if you want it Melvin.

I'm sure the warm and fuzzy children's book is right up your alley though huh?

Can't go wrong with Cornelius Ryan.

My latest buys (not WW2)

Fighter Pilot - Robin Olds (autobiography of a great two war fighter pilot)
New Dawn - Richard Lowry (The battles of Fallujah)
King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table - Roger Lancely (a more modern adaptation of Sir Thomas Mallory's book)
The Long Gray Line - Rick Atkinson (the story of the West Point Class of 1966 through school, Vietnam and after)

I found both of these books to be very interesting

If your into Patton.
You can read his diaries and head from the man himself 2 volume set. Or "War as I knew it" which is about as close as your going to get to reading about the war form his point of view.

1. "To Kingdom Come" by Robert J. Mrazek
2. "The Bomber Boys" by Travis L. Ayres

Both of these are nonfiction works detailing operations undertaken by the US 8th AAF in Europe. Most notably Big Week, Black Thursday, Stuttgart, Berlin and more. They get right to the heart of the situations explaining the experiences of the airmen who lived through it as well as the commanders like Ira Eaker, Hap Arnold, Arthur Harrison and Jimmy Doolittle.

I very highly recommend, “Endurance” by Alfred Lansing.

“The book recounts the failure of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in its attempt to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914 and the subsequent struggle for survival endured by the twenty-eight man crew for almost two years.”

It is the best book I have ever read.

Consider these with previews on Amazon. Bill Sloan's work on the Wake Island is the best ever written. I'll bet you didn't know that the Marines had effectively defeated the Japanese invasion troops, only to have a confused and isolated naval officer (senior officer present on the island) surrender, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Jim Hornfischer's The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is the best recounting of the Samar naval battle written to date, and his Neptune's Inferno is the best effort on the U.S. Navy's Guadalcanal engagements. Jim is a great guy, and he's a talented writer and researcher. Eric Bergerud's Fire in the Sky: The Air War in the South Pacific is also a very good read. Eric once had a Aces High account, and I seem to recall that he flew with the Blue Knights and was a pal of Lazs.

Using the prize money from his Somerset Maugham Award, Duncan McLean traveled from Orkney, Scotland, to Texas in search of the extraordinary mix of jazz, blues, country, and mariachi that is Western Swing. This account of his travels takes in barbed-wire museums, onion festivals, hoe-downs, ghost-towns, dead dogs, and ten thousand miles of driving through the Lone Star State.

I recommend Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam (Was hard to find a picture on google when i typed in cracker.  :cry)

I read it in middle school but its an emotional and such a great book, and its a very quick read untill you decide on your next book, but its definently worth a read.

I don't mean to hijack but is there a Who's Who in Aces High anywhere?  Detailing famous AH players?   You've some notoriety yourself, IIRC, Widewing - aren't you published somewhere?

I've been published in various aviation history magazines, in addition to doing editing and research for several established authors. I've also written for museum's websites and had my own website for 14 years. My writing is now concentrated on history based fiction. However, career and family requirements are limiting the time available to research and write. I try to get a few hours a week playing Aces High, which for me is a great stress buster.

Flyboys - by James Bradley - He also wrote the book 'Flags Of Our Fathers'

If I happen to be wrong about the name of the book, just look up his name. Flyboys is about several airmen that were shot down near Chi Chi Jima roughly about the time we invaded Iwo. It is pretty good book.

American Caeser .. all you ever wanted to know about Douglas Macarthur.
Lot of things I did not know, great history of the man and what he did.
He truly was the right man in the right place, no one could have done a lot of what he did better.
Like any man, he made mistakes (the delayed reaction to Jap attack on Phillipinnes his most glaring)
..but his orchestration of the Inchon Landings,
the retreat when the Chinese attacked in Korea,
..the island hopping campaign in South Pacific,
..the whole Japanese Post War era,
.. did you know he was 60 years old and *retired* when WW2 began?

Just an amazing individual.
Quirks and all.

LOL and what would that be?  That Bill O'Reilly makes it up as he goes along was my point.  There's been plenty of criticism of that book already for the mistakes.  Plenty of far better sources on Lincoln out there.

If I've exposed that I think O'Reilly is an idiot, I can live with that :)

"Mr Expert on Lincoln", why don't you tell me the mistakes?

Bill has already admitted there were something like 4 minor mistakes, and one typo, and those were corrected in later printings.  A couple of the "experts" who said there were big mistakes were quickly proven wrong and discredited.  Lets hear your list of mistakes.

And while you are at it, instead of being one of the sheep who regurgitate the soundbites put out by clowns like Letterman, tell me what he "makes up as he goes along"?

Not a problem.

At first I thought "Oh great, here we go with the arguing." Then I thought, "Hey, after all this IS a book thread. And what's a good book thread without a little lively debate regarding the reading material."

So, if you folks can keep it within the boundaries of bbs etiquette I have no problem with a mild hijack.

When you're done I'd like to get some people's opinion on the way J.J. Clark more or less reamed Halsey for his typhoon troubles in his book, "Carrier Admiral".

I've been reading "The Winning of America" series by Allan Eckert. So far I've read:

"The Frontiersmen"- Settling of the Ohio Valley and its tributaries. Focuses on the lives of Simon Kenton, Daniel Boone, Tecumseh, Blue Jacket.

"Wilderness Empire"- French and Indian Wars. Focuses on Sir William Johnson and his relationship with the Iroquois Indians.

"The Conquerors"- Siege of Detroit/Pontiacs War. Focuses of the Pontiacs siege of Detroit after the English wrestle control of North America from the French.

"The Wilderness War"- American Revolution on the frontier. Focuses on Mohawk warrior/leader Joseph Brant and the frontier war during the American Revolution.

Haven't read these two yet:

"Gateway to Empire"

"Twilight of Empire"

So I finished Pierre Clostermann's The Big Show a few weeks ago, and meant to write a report on it. Unfortunately time and my lack of writing skills got in the way.

I figured I'd just give some incoherent ramblings for your reading pleasure.

First off, I want to say that this is a wonderful book. Clostermann is a master of descriptive writing. I found myself madly turning pages as he dove us into the melee in "Le Grand Charles". I could vividly see the "yellow nosed" 190's as they flashed by his cockpit. I could also see the smoldering body of his squadmate as he burned in his wrecked aircraft. Unfortunately I can't really convey the depth to which Clostermann described his war. From the color of the sky to the smell of the ocean, to the sound of the cannons as they contacted aluminum, every harrowing encounter is unfolded before the mind's eye.

He also told of some things that I found a bit disturbing on a different level. And I shall now go into "my opinion" mode.

I think that Clostermann was directly responsible for getting some of his peers killed. He had a nasty tendency to leave his wingman blowing in the wind. In my opinion Clostermann was an egomaniac, who's lust for the kill caused him to forget about the well being of his comrades. I also feel that perhaps some of his claims were inflated quite a bit. It seemed that numerous engagements started with at least 40 Germans 3000 feet above him. Of course, I didn't mind so much as I realized that not only is he a descriptive writer, but he is a Frenchman as well. To me, this is the ultimate combination for the use of dramatic license.

Anyway, I probably should have written this when it was more fresh in my mind, but I didn't. Any and all discussion is welcome.

I'm currently reading General Patton's War As I Knew It. Bastogne is over, on to the Rhine...
